Well yeah, because he’s not gonna give out the actual reason why many people would use unsecured cameras that anyone has access to: illegal and nefarious purposes, and it would be in their best interest to avoid any liabilities as a result from someone watching this video and committing crimes!
@JayAlastor

funny enough... a lot of them they shown.... thats actually their intended use XD Its attraction and to allow people to search for stuff if something criminally bad happened. and use it as evidence in court against a person without a warrant and the police doing it.. .the person themselves can just look it up XD Now for structures of dams and retention walls and beaches... 100% was opened to by govt XD
@YourXavier

Considering some of the spy craft you've had before, this could be used as a form of communication. E.g. if we both know that there's an unsecure camera in the local park, we can agree that me sitting down on this particular bench means "We're blown, get out!" You'd never have to physically show up to receive the message (unlike e.g. a dead drop) and the camera isn't directly traceable to either of us, because it has been set up by some completely unrelated person.

Great idea! You'd have to have a series of public camera sources would need to be established before, as you don't control the source. The owner could change angles, turn off public access, or the camera altogether... then there is the issue of power and connectivity to consider.
@JayAlastor
@JayAlastor Жыл бұрын
fun fact. the govt had tried doing this for unsecured cameras across the US a decade or so ago to get people doing criminal acts... it wasnt worth it to them... maintence and SCROLLING through every single one camera upon thousands upon thousands hours of footage... is absolutely not worth the millions spent XD

If it's facing the sky they'll find it under a week.
@faxenmacher4633
@faxenmacher4633 11 ай бұрын
@@PVT900True. Even if it's not facing the sky, you can narrow it down to a longitudinal strip by the position of the sun/shadows at any given time. If there's any grass or trees in shot you can possibly narrow it down using windspeed and direction, and the weather as that is also inconsistent across the state. Flora, fauna any sounds, all narrow it down further From there, you assume it needs a constant power-supply, so it's likely to be located somewhat close to a building. It'll be a lot of guess work, but you can safely remove well over 90% of the search area. Granted, I'm just some pleb on the internet, nothing like the people who are actually good at this kind of stuff.

@faxenmacher4633 no your correct. 4chan did this with lebouf using stars, plane patterns, weather movement and then finally dispatching people via car to honk horns so that watchers could report the rough distance via sound. I am sorry to be nosey but could you unstring the recurve bow in the barrel that is in the background. Bows that are strung for prolonged periods of time will start to warp and the string itself will start to fray. Additionally, composite bows like that one are even more susceptible to warping.

I gotta be honest Brian, the sad truth is that most of the people who leave internet connected cameras with the default password aren't doing it because they want to share their sunset with the world. Most of them are usually just laziness or forgetfulness. The sunset one is neat, and I would be pleasantly disappointed if more of them out there are genuinely set up like that intentionally. But laziness and seemingly harmless incompetence are unfortunately the source of a lot of security issues.

Years ago, as young internet users of the 00's and not knowing any different, My brother and I installed Control ware and spyware on a copy of Plants With Zombies and scattered a few USB's around. For a few months we'd watch random's webcams and open and close their disk trays laughing at their reactions. We'd forgotten about it by the time that the word "Botnet" became commonplace, and I remember watching the news with my brother and there was a story about a massive botnet being used to DDOS websites, So we booted up the Botnet manager one more time before deleting as many traces of what we'd done... And Oh My God, At some stage someone must have uploaded our version of Plants Vs Zombies to a torrent because we had over 250,000 Computers we had access to. We were too terrified that we'd get caught so we removed everything we could and never touched that kind of stuff again. Good times.

Neither of us had the time to actually execute that plan, but that's another story for another time.

On the topic of default passwords, our school used a windows networking platform called RM, and it took less than a week for a student to find the user manual online. He shared it with a few other computer kids, myself included, and it listed all the usernames for the admin accounts (by default there were multiple for different management scenarios), and the password for everyone of them was defaulted to "changeme". Do you think my school paid attention?

So a few examples I've seen are for zoos (so you can watch animals), museums (like the exhibit for the most viscous liquid), traffic cams (so you can check your commute), trail/peak cams (usually to check weather/conditions), and parking lot cams (so you can gauge how busy it is). Usually these also have an accompanying website hosted by the owner(s), but the facts remain. As for abuse of the system, I had a buddy who was obsessed with this cam a guy posted that points into his neighbor's upstairs window. Apparently the neighbor was oblivious. Don't know if anything interesting ever came of it, but leaving that open to the world seems very spiteful...

For example, I've seen boiler and gas furnace thermostats online with default credentials in what appeared to be vacation homes that were unoccupied for months at a time, and anyone could easily find them and crank the temperature up to 90 degrees causing massive energy bills (at best) and damage to the home or equipment at worst.

I was literally looking at this like a couple weeks ago, specifically for weather/traffic conditions. It would be great for hurricane season tbh. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find live feeds except for updating stills. Also, bridge cam mentioned at the end does exist specifically for that reason. Don’t remember the name though

10:45 Critte cam. bird cam or nesting cams are very popular with national and state parks. (And yes they actually do purposefully leave these cameras open for people to check in on them) its mostly for the Services to make sure the animals are okay, but a side product is people getting drawn in to the park/reserve and they can get donations and whatnot too (I think the last time i checked... There's an actual .gov site for these sorts of cameras a year or so ago) Now for you guys seeing structural use of stuff, such as dams, rivers, retention ponds. thats local and state govt having open cameras for media use to allow them quick access to show what's happening. (albeit some of them were broken into and leaked... but saying how they dont care and not taken them down... i think they dont mind) Also for Street views. its mostly for high tourist areas for attractions, then there are areas where high crime is suspected or occured. Breaking, vandalizing. kidnapping even.. so they put up open cameras for people to track and go through to help the police in case if they need extra eyes.

Depends on how that site creates thumbnails, but just browsing could be making connections to the remote cameras from your IP. If that's how they coded the page instead of caching them on their own hosting, then you are connecting, possibly with those default credentials just to get the thumbs. So don't instantly feel safe legally because you *think* this site's doing all the work for you.
