The thing I would change is nothing. But I would have preferred the selectable hi/lol transfer case and to make sure it had some sort of locker front and rear. Great job great channel,keep up the good work and content.

Since it's AWD and the transfer case is wide open, if you lose a differential you're going to lose all your gears. Same goes if you lose a driveshaft, if you have one single wheel in the air, etc. That transfer case simply does not lock up and you will not get the 50-50 split to the front and rear that you're expecting. So it is *NOT* simply a lack of low range.

Great video, it would be great if you did a little more than point out the differences - what do you feel, as an expert, the pros and cons of the AWD vs. 4WD of the Suburban. Why do so feel it is a game changer and others feel it is a deal breaker.
@evansautomotive307
@evansautomotive307 2 жыл бұрын
The awd is easier to handle for newbies, no putting it in 4x4, it's always stable. The bad part about the awd is that you get worse milage, and you have no low range gears. The denali is not better at towing really because the suspension is the same between the 2. The denali is good for someone who isn't going to do a ton of offroading. Just forest roads and such.

Here are a couple of technical tips; AWD in these GM rigs gives you 3 Open Differentials and in most cases this is great for highway driving stability in snow and rain but gets you stuck in slow driving in sand/ snow/ rocks unless you are really giving it all the beans and still the abs/traction control tends to shut down the driveline and leave you stuck. I added a Truetrac Detroit Torsen Locker in the rear and it makes all the difference as the optional factory G80 clutch pack wears quickly and does not work well typically. The front IFS differential is not strong enough for a locker I have been told. I just completed a ‘round the West tour this week and got stuck NoWhere even going over Cinnamon Pass in Colorado’s Alpine Loop. Another issue to strongly consider is the 4L65E transmission has a low 3.0 first gear ratio which helps but you still find yourself using brakes when instead you want a low gear transfer case to use engine braking to keep the big rig under 25 mph on those steep rocky off-road downhills. My next upgrade is a lockable low geared 4WD transfer case to make this as close to Jeep capability with big GM towing/cargo/ comfort that Jeep does not offer. Lifted 3” and set on 33’s fully loaded with Mountainbikes, cartop carrier, and all the other gear, my 2004 Escalade ESV still runs 90mph on the Utah and Montana highways with ease. Thanks Suboverland for bringing content on GM overlanding as it is the most cost effective way to get to 99% of the places we adventurers want to go. These trucks are cheap, parts are plentiful, competent mechanics can work on them anywhere. Enjoy!

I'm in Utah and found a great deal on an 01 Denali. I am real hesitant about the AWD, but - I don't plan to do any serious off-roading. I just want something capable in the rain/ice/snow and maybe do some light off-road for camping. I'm hoping its not an issue but the price is so good and its in such good condition I can't pass it up!

This is a first video I’ve seen about lifting a Yukon Denali with AWD and auto leveling for the rear suspension. Do the same thing to my 2005 Yukon Denali. Did you buy a specific kit from someone? Was it required for you to disconnect the automatic ride height system? Did you use wheel spacers at all? Thanks so much for sharing the video. Liked and Subscribed.

I just wished I could live in your beautiful country…for so many reasons. But as a “car guy”, who loves American cars, and also(of course) the GM platforms(especially the GMT 800’s) it would have been heaven. I’m very interested in the Suburban/Yukon XL 6,6 Duramax conversion, and then also of course as a “sub overland” vehicle. Is it a difficult question to ask what the price is for these vehicles ? Love your channel btw.

I also have an 04 Yukon XL Denali. You can crank the front torsion keys and put in a set of Moog HD springs for a nice 2-3 inch lift. I decided to do just that and I also got ride of the auto leveling ride shocks in the rear. Mainly because they were torn and they just cost too much money to replace. I love the ride and stance of my Yukon now!
@zeus5544332211

The truck CAN be lifted and also keep the air leveling system. You will need to use shock extender brackets. Theses factory systems often are coupled with awesome electronic dampening control which makes these trucks corner flat like a sports car even when full of people and gear. I lifted my 2004 Escalade ESV 3”+. Air shock prices have dropped significantly since China started making them. These rear shocks pop every couple of years but at just $150-200 a pair it’s a cheap and easy repair. It is a nice system when you load these rigs down with gear and hitch accessories.
