Funny that you figured "East Hastings" would make a perfect soundtrack to some kind of horror or sci-fi. It was used in the scene revealing the post-Zombie apocalypse in the 2002 film 28 Days Later.

The way I view GYBE’s first three albums is like F#: something really bad just happened LYSF: let’s pay tribute to everything that just died Yanqui: something really bad is currently happening PLEASE react to Yanqui U.X.O. It’s one of the coolest sounding albums I’ve ever heard and completes this mini-“trilogy”
@tandycake41087 ай бұрын
The way I see it, GYBE's first three make a trilogy about the apocalypse: - F#A#oo, with its themes of desolation, is set after the apocalypse. - LYSF, with its immediacy and dynamic themes of hope vs despair, is set during the apocalypse. - Yanqui, with its contemporary (circa 2002) political themes and the air of premonition around the whole thing, is set before the apocalypse.

KZfaq recommended you to me today, and I have watched nearly every one of your videos since. Love when your vibing with something like the chord progression or when the "cats are cooking" You react to a lot of my favorite music like The Strokes, MBV, Slint, etc and all the others and ones I want to listen to or tried to get into. Your reaction to the 21st Schizoid sample is class aswell hahah

Think you'd dig Mogwai - Young team. It's really something to behold.. plus one of the tracks off that album has the best jump scare in music. 😂
@davidmannion7333 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, definitely this. Young Team is great. Still post rock but more visceral than Godspeed with a dollop of shoegaze. You can't go far wrong with any of their subsequent albums either but Come On Die Young is great as well.

It’s called F#A# infinity because that’s the tunings the guitars use and at the end of the record version it has a locked groove so the last part loops forever or infinitely @smags1082

Saw them live in 2003 in Cleveland. Great show, small room. Near the end the drummer was walking through the audience playing a hubcap on a wire like a gong.

If you ever have a half hour to kill and you're in a pretty good headspace, listen to their song "motherfucker=redeemer" with your eyes closed, and try to remember everything you see. That song is absolutely therapeutic, if not life-changing.

That "Where are you going?" part in Providence is probably the most haunting musical moment I've ever heard. This was my favourite album for a while in my late teens/early 20s. In terms of immersion and instrumental worldbuilding I still can't think of many other albums that come close to this one. Maybe not as musically "full" as some of the later Godspeed albums, but I still find it to be the most engulfing one. Some of the textures these guys achieve are just incredible.

Yanqui U.X.O. for me is their best work, but there's no 'bad work' and their output varies from 'fantastic' to 'life changing'. Their first 3 full length albums in particular are essentially flawless in my eyes - even having just one of those 3 would be a defining release for the band, let alone having them all. On another note, you should react to Can - Tago Mago. Mind-melting album.

A little context for samples: The opening vocal is from a movie that Efrim, the guitarist and founding member, was filming but ultimately never completed, further referenced in the Silver Mt. Zion track 'Movie Never Made'. Don't know the 'large barge' sample, but it's probably recorded off short wave radio. The 'Where are you going?' sample is taken from the track 'By My Side' in the musical 'Godspell'. The Gathering Storm sample seems to be an old Gospell song which later formed the melodic basis for 'Gathering Storm' from 'Lift Yr. Skinny Fists'.

The Godspeed Slow Riot EP is essential listening. But if you like the apocalyptic nature of this album, I can whole heartedly recommend the collab between Japanese Post Rock artists Mono & World's End Girlfriend Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain. Trailer's 3 and 5 are great mirror images of each other - the same base melody but completely different interpretations.
