Godzilla has always been a fighter. Shin was not. He probably wouldn't have bothered anyone if left alone. Minus One lives up to that fighter trait. He advances and attacks with ferocity. Shin looked scary, Minus acted scary, even in his pre mutated form. There were times when Minus felt like GMK Godzilla because of his aggression. And that deep, aggressive 1954 roar... Its no wonder that 4 out of my top 5 favorite films use that roar.

I feel Minus One is a very much akin to Raids again more so than the original. The way both films focus on the people of Japan and how they still hold out for hope when all seems lost. I love both films and Minus One I feel easily earns its place as one of the best Godzilla movies in the series.

What I love about Minus One is it not only takes the best aspects of past films, but even SHOWS us things that we’ve never seen in the past, brings back attention to aspects from other films, and heavily improves upon them. Hell it even one-ups the Jurassic Park films of recent years. It really deserves a sequel and I hope it gets one, because I’ve gotten very tired of just one-offs from Toho.

The rumor of the movie being anti-American came from a Reddit post due to Takashi Yamazaki's The Eternal Zero (2013 film)'s controversy for a bad depiction of WWII and being anti-war, even criticized heavily by filmmaker and animator, Hayao Miyazaki. I've talked with the user who made the post when Japanese critics and audiences' reviews. They're weren't happy of their post were misconstrued that became clicks by wacko lowlife article writers for ways to hurt the film and the Yamazaki. They said their post wasn't meant to hurt Godzilla: Minus One, it's just a concern when Japan makes WWII-centric movies in general ignoring the darker aspects of the war making themselves victim cards. The user is extremely thrilled and happy right now that the film is perfectly fine.

Glad you liked the film, Takashi Yamazaki brought such emotion to the human story that you really feel for them and even want to see them succeed with even the ending got me the feels. Godzilla was truly made an angry force of destruction and his attack scenes were absolutely brutal and yes he even showed a personality. The final fight was really gripping and one of the few times I had no idea were it was going to go and if anyone will make it out alive. Minus One was excellent imo and had such a great time watching it, this was the godzilla project I was looking forward the most and it did not disappoint.

Also when you said about a few shots looked like they were inspired by the legendary films well we all saw the swiming under the ship scene from the trailer that was a nod to 2014, but also in the film godzilla swam away in one scene in a very similar fashion to how he did in KOTM after his rebirth.

Watched it at the advance IMAX screening & was more than pleased with what I saw. If I had one complaint it would be that Godzilla could have used a bit more screen time when attacking the Ginza district. I have no doubt more of that scene was filmed than what made the final cut. But that's about it. The FX, characters, music, story, all top of the line. I'll definitely be watching it again before it leaves theaters.

I'm going to tell them, their family, their friends, their dog, EVERYONE, this movie is nothing less than a triumph of not just the franchise. but of film this entire year. Even I don't agree with your view on Shin, I do agree this is far and away the best Godzilla has been in years, dare I say since the original. I am so happy to have seen this, and I feel so refreshed after. I doubt a Godzilla movie after this can live up to it, but this does give me a very optimistic view for the franchise moving forward.

Regarding Toho's Godzilla / kaiju output, one could even go back as far as nearly 20 years ago, with "Godzilla: Final Wars", which I recall was VERY polarizing among the Godzilla fandom. Between "Final Wars" and "Singular Point", yes, it has been a very mixed bag.
@PS2_Best_Era
@PS2_Best_Era 8 ай бұрын
I think Final Wars was a premonition of the direction the franchise was headed in if you think about it. It was not remotely anywhere near a Godzilla film, felt more like a mashup of all the worst tropes Hollywood had to offer in the early 2000s, and of course alienated fans of the older films. It was an attempt to get the Western Crowd to buy tickets as well, meaning the charm of the older films had to be done away with in favor of dumbing it down for the lowest common denominator. The MV is very much like that, but all CGI and a-list actors.

Let's put it this way. I took a bunch of my friends who aren't really familiar with Godzilla except for maybe a couple movies I had them watch to see it for its early screening and they all loved it. Also keep in mind that me and them are all a bunch of high school kids that mostly have terrible attention spans. With that out of the way I will say this, Godzilla -1 is not a Godzilla movie, It's a Gojira movie. It literally does everything the original does but better in every way.

Shin Godzilla was not soulless propaganda but really a sly political satire about the inertia of the Japanese government whose in-jokes and nuances are missed by anyone not Japanese who doesn't know the political set-up in Japan. Shin Ultraman is a companion piece to Shin Godzilla in that it's also a political satire about how the Japanese government will roll over and do a deal with any entity that offers them power while hoping someone better will save them from themselves. Both movies are co-written by the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion Hideaki Anno who directed Shin Godzilla but produced Shin Ultraman. Godzilla Minus One is a totally different animal. It's a humanist movie about choosing life over war. It's actually a radical message for a Japanese story when the Japanese government in WWII practically brainwashed the nation into believing they should die with honour fighting for the country. The hero Shikishima opting to skirt his mission as a kamikaze may be considered shameful, but he and every Japanese soldier on the frontline knew by then that no matter what they did, Japan was going to lose the war and didn't see the throwing their lives away for nothing. That's a radical message for Japan even now, and the theme of a weak governmenet that abandons the people int ime of crisis is part of the current mood in Japan, and the notion of fighting to live, not die is a rebuke of the Samurai Bushido code of always preparing to die.

1. it's not that kind of The Message, if anything, it could be seen as the kind of message that is supported by the conservative subfaction of those who have a problem with The Message. 2. there's nothing of the kind of destruction by deconstruction you understandably dread, just a competently executed heroes journey. 3. it's a pretty good movie. I can see ways to argue that it's not a good Godzilla movie, but a non-spoiler review isn't the place to dive into that topic. Let's say it like this: Minus One is a good Godzilla movie in the same sense that the currently running anime Bullbuster is a good Patlabor series. Finally, I believe Minus One gains enough from the cinema experience to be worth the ticket price. You won't regret it. And watch Bullbuster, it's pretty good.

"I don't want to see my heroes made to be evil, deconstructed and blown into a million pieces." Please tell me you've seen the original Gojira. He was always a villain first as someone who grew up on some showa, mostly heisei and millennium era godzilla films I've seen the full spectrum of Godzilla films as I've aged. This film in my opinion is easily better than most Godzilla films I don't think I can view cheesy monster brawls as the peak of the franchise anymore after seeing this film. The human drama is what made Godzilla in the first place he's a metaphor for the horrors of war and nuclear disaster. Always has been and he always will be. After this I want them to go the extra step bring us a Godzilla vs film with the character writing and emotional depth that this film has.

@@vmonk722 I can understand the point of view of liking this film. I also understand the origin of Godzilla. Believe me, I know. I am a lifelong fan who is old enough to have seen Showa era films in the theater. To keep it simple... this is the wrong time for this sort of thing... literally every beloved character in the past decade has been 'reimagined' into dumb, moronic, incompetent, evil, inferior, etc. and then used to deliver a message. I'm tired of it. The fans have spoken. Most people don't want these types of characters. Most Godzilla fans want to see a lot of Godzilla. They don't want to see Godzilla die and they don't care about human drama. What does the movie industry give us?... exactly what we don't want. I'm sorry, I'm just not buying into that everyone wants Godzilla to be evil (rather than neutral, or a force of nature, etc.) and then killed and given a death in which he is blown up into a million pieces. I'll accept evil or I'll accept a death like in 'Godzilla vs. Destroyah'. Accept this sort of plot and the next movie will go with deeper messaging...

@@chozochiefxiii3298 Yes, I am well aware of Godzilla's origin. I've seen every Godzilla film (except the Anime) at minimum, 3 times each. I take no issue with people, like yourself, who want to see a movie with human drama or who watch Godzilla fans for reasons that are different than my own. It's not what I personally want to see. There is a way to deliver messages in movies without it being thrown in your face. Godzilla's message of 'nukes are bad' was delivered loud and clear, 70 years ago. I think every Godzilla fan knows that the plots of the Monsterverse are terrible, yet almost every fan has had a blast watching these movies because of the terrific monster action. All I'm gonna say is that Godzilla is dead. It's become streamlined for normies. Like many other franchises, it will no longer be made for Godzilla fans. What made the older films charming is gone now. All that's left is slow-mo, bayhem, cliche characters, predictable stories, mindless action, playing it safe, and so on. No more suits, no more miniatures, no more practical effects, no more creative/outlandish plots, and only musical references to older films to satisfy the so-called "Fans" who support Godzilla becoming the next MCU. The MV is already showing these symptoms with the Marvel-tier quips and "comedy", the Americanization of not only Godzilla but other kaiju as well. The iconic designs of Mothra, King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Godzilla are reduced to something out of 50s American Monster flicks. no originality nor appeal. Ultraman will remain the superior franchise and will be a safe haven for Tokusatsu fans who don't want the things they love to become streamlined for the normie crowd. If Gamera can get its act together, returning to the glory of the Heisei Era, it can finally put the final nail in Godzilla's coffin too. Not to mention, Minus One is - from what I've seen - average (i.e. bland) at best. Hitting all the cliches to appeal to the dumbed down massed. That's what Marvel was too - average. These films are meant to keep you coming back for more, like junk food. No junk food, no rewatchability beyond one time. For those of you who think this is a good thing, I hate you so much. The same people that bullied us for liking these things are now having said things changed to cater to them. Another franchise ruined for the sake of profit. Godzilla's Revenge is better than the MV and Reiwa films.

@@Godzilla-jr5gi How so? I'd say straying away from suitmation/miniature sets is a huge departure. Not to mention, the creativity (or more outlandish) nature of the old films is completely lost on the Reiwa Era. Even the worst of the older films at least had cool ideas or did something that made me think "you know what, that's kinda neat".

@@legendarygodzillatheking3049 No they're not. Older films were far more creative when it came to the kaiju, plot, and human characters. Not to mention, the practical effects will age way better than the CGI.
