So, I just don't understand Quinn's arguments at all sometimes. Apple releases a HMD and they position it as a spatial computing device. Everything about Apple Vision Pro makes it clear that Apple is not focused on VR content applications but rather MR/AR use cases that entails general computing. But here you are, Quin, insisting "iT iS a Vr hEaDsEt WhEtHeR aPpLe LiKeS iT oR NoT". Yet, you're still complaining about why Apple didn't focus on VR experiences for this device while you know very well that that's never their focus for it. Why not just enjoy other devices that caters for those VR experiences while Apple also focus on their intention for Apple Vision platform? You are just contradicting yourself and coming of as someone who want to find something to complain about about this device.

Honestly hate these podcast in AVP. It's like they are trying to force you to believe it looks better than recording your natural face. If any other company had made that personas they would have laughed and redicule it sigh!

This is one of the most enjoyable video ... I can't believe I actually watched / listened to the whole 2 hrs. And guess what, I have an old iPhone 6 that I power up ocassionally just to charge it, a Macbook Air that I also power up once in a while just to charge it, and no AVP. I love how all you guys have differing views about the AVP and actually share what you like ... and what you really don't like about it in your real life usage, which I can sort of resonate with, as a Pico 4 VR headset user even if they are quite different in market/price range. Love this video! :)

I am liking the apple vision pro FaceTime podcast and learning something new about its capabilities in each podcast 😀 IMO I just don’t see the iPhone going away if it’s the Apple vision pro or other devices go over your eyes. It’s like saying eyeglasses went away once contacts and eye vision correction surgery was available. Cell phones were widely and relatively quickly adopted because it replaced home phones that you could take with you (and replaced beepers). I feel the best case of AR/VR goggles would replace TVs. Families in the future could probably have one main tv and then everyone individually has an Apple vision pro or air.

Another great episode. Loved the banter and the open expressing of all the "As if!!"'s to each other...propper gaming-esque friendly trash talk type vibes. good times. I enjoy these Vision Pro FT call episodes. I think you should go back and forth for those who hate it. I love them as it gives us time to be in the VisionOS and watch the way communicating is working ATM and how awesome those personas are the more we see them The eyes are such an important part of communicating in person and with a good scan they got that nailed really good, the rest of it will come in time! But like i said in the last episode, integration with our other devices will be huge, and with more swift and quick gestures like waving inwards while looking at an Apple Watch will bring up the set of Watch assigned widgest into view, and waving-out closes them all. Or quick specific eye gestures to bring it up so you dont even need to move your hand, like a quick back and forth and back again motion with ones eyes at two dots on the watch brings up the widgets etc....so many possibilities!

As a developer who has heavily invested in a home office setup, I highly recommend the Apple Vision Pro. Before acquiring the Apple Vision Pro, my setup included a 55" Odyssey Ark for coding (previously, I used two 45" Ultra Wide Monitors), a standing desk, a theater chair, and a 65" OLED Sony for entertainment. I must say, I absolutely love using the Apple Vision Pro! The visuals are clear and crisp. Nothing compares to watching the movie "Dune" while immersed in the White Sands environment on a giant screen (I'm talking 12-18ft wide!), coding on a 120" screen, and lounging in a theater chair. It's truly an experience like no other. Another great perk is the portability it offers. I've been able to take work outside and be productive in my backyard, enjoying fresh air and a change of scenery, all while setting up activities for my kids. The ability to work comfortably outdoors has been a game-changer. If price isn't a concern, I strongly recommend getting the Apple Vision Pro. It's an investment that enhances not just work, but overall lifestyle.

So about the light seal issue, when I did the demo at apple, the light seal that the face scan recommended was awful, after I told them they gave me a form to fill out which resulted in a totally different fit, that fit felt really good. So to all of those who are looking to buy I would suggest to go try the seals in person and find on that feels the best for you.

Finally... Snazzy says what I've been assuming but no one else has said. I knew there was just no way you can have a "4K virtual Mac monitor" inside screens that themselves are only 4K. It never made sense, but no one else has said the virtual screen thing wasn't as good as looking at a real monitor.

Mass market headsets are so tricky since everyone's head shape is different. I have a pretty rectangular head, so the dual loop works really well for me. But I can imagine if your head is a bit rounder then it would just be sliding, like Quinn said. There really needs to be a lot of options for it to work. Hopefully someone will make a halo strap soon.

I'm not sure what brings on the Quest 3 hate from Sam. I just bought a Quest 3 a few days ago and I'm in love with it. Granted, I'm sure there are aspects of the AVP that would be much better quality, obviously. But as they mentioned in this podcast, there are not enough things available yet, for me at least, to merit spending the ~4K on AVP when it's basically doing the same things as the Quest 3 ... and, in fact, gaming on the Quest 3 is WAY better than AVP currently. I absolutely look forward to owning an AVP SOMEday ... since I'm totally a fan of the ecosystem. But I am not at ALL disappointed with my Quest 3. I had a ton of homework for college last night so I didn't go to an actual Super Bowl party ... but instead, I went into Bigscreen and joined like 14 other people in a room to watch the Super Bowl on this MASSIVE screen, and I was also able to open up a remote desktop window inside this room and do my homework while watching the game and interacting with the other people. It was incredible. And today I'm working in an environment with 4 different monitors on the side of a mountain to do my job, since i work from home. I'm loving this thing ...

56:25 in regards to the Vision Pro not having any controllers. I’m reminded when the iPhone first came out and how Apple refused follow the Android trend of having a touchscreen but also including a keyboard. Eventually Android phones ditched the keyboard in favor of embracing a full touchscreen experience. I feel like the same will be true here. Sure right now it may seem limited but as the technology improves, hand gestures will become the standard.

Vision Pro (and the Quest etc.) should implement Swype style instead of the painfully slow eye-tracking typing or the virtual finger touch typing. Accuracy in the virtual space would be much easier and you'd be able to type MUCH faster. It's so obvious that I assume that it's not implemented for licensing / legal reasons, not because it can't be done.

It's funny, I'm usually very attracted to new technology, but this headset? Nope. I've known VR since the launch of the Oculus Rift, I was blown away, but it just has fundermental issues -> It's just not a device you want to wear for long. It feels so isolating and after taking the device off every single time (no matter how good the experience was) came the feeling of "yeah, finally back". I have these fundamental problems less or not at all with a classic TV.

This is why I treat it as a gaming device and not a MR/AR/Spatial Computing device. Which is why the AVP sounds like the dumbest purchase right now. Having to play a survival game, where you have to manually put bullets into a bullet carry strap, to reload your gun, to manually fire and turn off safety… This is reignited my love for FPS games that has long been dormant.

I doubt Vision Pro will ever go the glasses route. I think they will keep the fully immersive aspect with light sealing headsets that just get smaller and more form fitting over time. Edit: control centre should be a quick access window like what some quest apps do with a control panel/wheel that pops up when you look at your palm. Edit 2: Pinch as a hand gesture is very restrictive thinking in the future. Full palm/finger tracking in the future would be great, as it would allow us to realistically pick up objects and manipulate them in other ways. One day hopefully windows will be fully physicalized and we can throw em around like frisbees haha Edit 3: wow Snazzy mentioned everything I said in end lol. Still physical independent UI elements would still be insane (imagine we could pull an app out of the app drawer and place it somewhere like a fully physical shortcut button).

1:04 I don't know how Vision OS would translate to an actual clear glasses form factor. The sheer amount of compute and computer vision and sensors that are required to make Vision OS work the way it does. Tracking your hands and eyes, optimising windows to fit in with your environment, making all those cool drop shadows and the tracking, are maybe only possible in a form factor that can have all the sensors you need to do that. There just maybe isn't the room on a pair of glasses to fit 9 cameras and 6 microphones and the eye tracking even if say you moved the compute to the battery puck. At least not currently. However maybe when you were doing a facetime you could have a camera on the puck and set it on the desk in front of you. Or just use your phone's camera.

The issue with that form factor is the quality of the displays (they tend to make AR elements translucent) and the small fov (like 45 degrees, so way way smaller than apple vision pro). So the technology already exists, and I presume they solved the focal distance issue you are describing.

You are correct but either it won’t be exactly like glasses completely but be a mix of both normal glasses and what  has now-It could even be something we haven’t ever seen or imagined.Otherwise if it is glasses maybe it will have thicker edges for the cameras or maybe  will remove some microphones to compensate. We can’t know until we see it.

This episode thankfully answered a question I've wanted answered about focal length. Based on comments in this episode I believe Apple messed up with focal length. If Apple haven't used an infinite focal length and instead opted for a short focal length like most VR headsets this is a massive mistake. The comments about eye strain indicate to me that Apple made the wrong choice. Not only will an infinite focal length never cause eye strain but it will also improve the vision for any person who has an eye sight problem related to eye strain which is most people with eye sight issues. And here's a real life example. Diabetes causes sight problems, diabetes is common on Pitcairn island but people on Pitcairn island typically have superior eye sight because they spend most days looking out to sea for passing ships. If you spend most of your time indoors and looking at close up objects you are much more likely to develop sight problems and need glasses but if you spend most of your time outside looking to objects in the distance your eyes are always relaxed and your vision at every distance improves. There have been papers written discussing focal length in VR and it's a contentious subject but it's this fundamental truth that is being missed by most. VR has the ability to help improve vision and instead a common design choice is causing vision impairment. And that idea of VR having the ability to improve or hurt eye sight is not debatable, there are specific VR devices that have been designed to improve vision and they work. Of course the providers of those will argue their design or apps are the key but based on my experience it's actually focal length, the original PSVR despite having pretty terrible visual quality improved my eye sight to the point where I no longer needed my glasses when I used it every day. When I switched from it to better looking VR headset my eye sight rapidly degraded.

The schpeel at 1:40:00 is inaccurate. Varifocal lenses won't do anything except make the whole areas of the screen, if not the whole screen, in or out of focus. To move the technology forward, the device would have to know whether you're wanting to look in the foreground or background by sensing what your iris wants to focus on, by actually measuring the shape of your eye's biological lens, and maybe the size of the ciliary muscle. (Think those machines at the doctors that you look into and it can tell your prescription.). THEN, it would have to use this info, in real time no less, to somehow modulate a special laminated screen+lens that has the ability to make the light simultaneously converge or diverge for each pixel, or group of pixels, BASED on what is "supposed" to be blurry to your eye at any given moment, and what is "supposed" to be sharp, for example, holding up your fingers spaced apart and looking at mountains through them, seeing blurry finger, sharp background, blurry finger, sharp background. The problem is nearly unsolvable, especially if you're wanting less than 700g on your face. The part about making your eyes point in or out is already solved, though, as basic 3D techniques. Actually, now that I think about it, you could probably solve the image generation part above to trick your eye's level of satisfaction of "this thing should be in focus, but it's not" and vice versa, by just making objects blurry in software. However, there's probably some lower-level neurons that would still be unsatisfied that certain rods and cones were or weren't 'lit up' as expected with light rays that are physically hitting different parts of the eye because they are out of focus. Once the brain turns it into an image, however, I suspect that technique would at least lessen some base mental strain.
