The current market/economy is unnecessarily tougher for boomers/senior citizens, I’m used to just buying and holding assets which doesn’t seem applicable to the current rollercoaster market plus inflation is catching up with my portfolio. I’m really worried about survival after retirement.

I agree. The fed's balance sheet, which I believe in the long run is the true money supply, has gone from about 1 trillion in 2009 to 8 trillion. Basic math tells us that commodity prices should also go up 8 times eventually. The only question is will we get it all at once in the form of hyperinflation? Or will it be gradual?

I’m pretty sure the past 20 years gold has been the best performing asset percentage wise than stocks and bonds. Sure buy stocks for the “long term” as long as you are willing to take a loss for a decade or more. It took the market like 20 years to get back to the same highs prior to the ‘29 crash. It took 8 years after ‘08. When I this crash comes, it won’t retake the highs until some of us are dead or older than we are now.

Gold doesn't need yield; it is money! Bonds and stocks need yield to keep up with inflation. Look at the value of Gold and the S&P from 1971 to today; Gold outperformed and has zero counterparty risk. I haven't lost a single night's sleep since owning it!

Gold has a great yield! As long as they print your currency, gold is going up! The average yield of all commodities is another good definition of inflation. Inflation is a headwind against any financial vehicle not tied to a commodity.

The idea Peter is trying to confer, is that buying productive stocks now, will mean a certain loss when as the dollar corrects downwards. I still buy value stocks in the energy market with a decent dividend. However, owning some gold now, is a great way to preserve your cash and buy stocks later after the major correction. Not to mention, the FED is going to have to print money to cover the existing bonds.

The other Peter saying gold has "just" kept up with inflation doesn't understand gold. You don't buy it to speculate or for yield or based on returns. You buy gold because it is ACTUALLY valuable against ITSELF! Gold bugs don't really care about the DOLLAR price tag per ounce because when dollars get toted around in wheelbarrows... Well.

The dip today is the result of speculators taking their profit. Happens at every peak. Hearing that today China's credit rating has been cut to negative I expect another peak soon.

Agreed, which is exactly the reason I stopped taking advise from KZfaqrs; in the long run, I only end up with a jumbled collection of stocks and bonds. Whereas all I needed to earn over $350k in less than three years was guidance from a true market strategist.
