I'm a big fan of my VCOG SCO. Granted I bought it used for 1.5k or so. For me, it is the best LPVO I have used, including a March 1-10 Shorty and Steiner T6 1-6. The VCOG beats both of those in overall usability. Big fan. I'd like to see Trijicon offer a 2.5-10x36 VCOG with an adjustable parallax instead of illumination and marked turrets.

Oops, I missed showing up for this one. I'll just say it all here instead. Who is this optic for? You really need to have a very specific set of priorities to speed the $1800 it costs to buy this model. As Jon said, the glass is amazing, the battery life is the best in the business, the 8x is fantastic, the increased objective size increases the exit pupil, which makes it mathematically better in lower light. I'd steer clear if you ever mean to dial, weight is a concern, or if you don't have $2000 for an optic and mount burning a hole in your bank account. Overall the VCOG is my pick for the 1x performance and the battery life. I live in the woods, with goats and ducks, and sometimes I get coyotes running around, but my longest shot out here is about 50yds. The excellent clarity means I'm not going to accidentally shoot the neighbor's German Shepard when he comes sniffing around the coop late in the evening. I would never recommend it to anyone though, especially in a world where the Credo 1-8x exists, as it has the same excellent glass, the same very usable brightness, the same 1x, turrets that are both locking and dialable, and about $600 less. Oh, and the ADM mount wasn't to shave weight, it was to get closer to a 1.93" optic height, and the unity mount didn't exist at the time. If I was going to do it again, I'd go for one with the SCO reticle and a Unity mount. Edit: Bruce is the only one I want shooting my scopes from now on.

Wish more companies did forged housings with integral struts. Saves you the hassle of having to level the scope (assuming you want it level to the rifle and the rail and mount are also level). March teased a integral strut design, which if they do that for their FX 1.5-15, then I'd be game. Love my accupower 1-8 and my credo 1-8, but those were already heavy for a 1-8, so I see no reason to get a vcog 1-8, unless they make it competitive in features and cost.

@FocusTripp I have the same optics and for me, dumping the extra money for a more durable version of what I already have with better battery life is just not worth it. Now if we could have the atacr reticle (with its thinner stadias for range), and the bright center dot of it, plus a place for to mount a rmr for passive night vision shooting it'd be a hit for me. Especially since personally a canted rmr is out of the question due to running a mawl. Edit: Also forgot to mention that the only thing I own that runs AA's is my PVS-14s, so I'd have to find yet another place to store batteries (on my rifle) when I already can fit 5 duracell CR2032's (which come in convenient sealed plastic film) in my stock for my LVPO, and the RMR's on my rifle and pistol. So that's a downside also.

I really like the direction the military style lpvo's went. Both trijicon and sig have really great eyeboxes, illumination, 1x performance reticles and bright illumination "depending on reticle". The more these optics are fielded, the closer to acog reliability they become and all of a sudden you have something like a glock.. everything you need and nothing you dont.

Trijicon is the only company I know making red dots and scopes from forged aluminum. Their RMR, SRO, ACOGs and VCOGs are all forged giving them their durability. I think people don't know this and honestly don't understand why they're so expensive. That and it's made in America with one of the best warranties in the industry. Companies like Holosun told me to kick rocks. Interestingly enough, Swampfox has pretty decent customer service and warranty coverage. Vortex is the best I've used so price doesn't seem like it's a factor with warranties.

People often bring up the cost and weight of this optic, but often don't fully appreciate the convenience, weight, and cost savings of having an integral mount. $2200 sounds like a lot when compared to similar optics until you factor in not spending a few hundred $s on rings + qd mount of equivalent quality. Not having to mess with scope rings is not an insignificant feature. It's really helpful for people new to large format optics, and as far as I know not really something anyone else provides in this category of optic.

@@FocusTripp If you're choosing between 2 optics of similar price and one of them requires ordering scope rings and a mount and then either leveling + mounting the scope or bringing it to someone who does, and the other one doesn't at all then yeah $200+shipping + effort is totally a big deal. And $200 isn't nothing even if you're spending $2k on the optic itself.

I must disagree with this review. This SCO VCOG-a VARIABLE COMBAT OPTIC GUNSIGHT- is designed to be zeroed at 100 yards, the elevation and windage capped, and then used with holdovers and intuitive windage adjustments by the Marines for COMBAT. Soldiers are dead if they start to mess around in close combat with elevation and windage adjustments. What do I know about this optic? I spray painted a 6-inch orange circle on steel at 500 yards and hit it dead center with my AR-15 shooting 5.56 ammo--first shot. Would I use this optic for shooting out to 500-700 yards and beyond with my Tikka T3X TAC A1? No. That's why they make Nightforce. For close combat on an AR, this is GREAT FOR YOU. You are reviewing the wrong optic if you are looking for long distance targeting optics. That's not what it's for. The Trijicon 1-8x28 is perfect for 25-300 yards for combat and out to 500 yards if you are a marksman.

The issue with higher power - LPVO is the glass quality and coatings, if you go above 6x they have to have very high quality lens and coatings to work well. This means the costs can blow out. As a general rule manufacturers will tell you that a single lens in the 4x to 6x works very well and can be extremely good whilst being competitively priced, then you pair it with another lens that meets your base magnification needs e.g typically 3x or 4x. Thus anything above 1 x 6, to be good particularly toward the margins is invariably very expensive.

As for you concern about adjustments, the MRAD offers elevation and windage adjustments, but it is really meant to be zeroed to 100 yards and then left along for close combat. I don't recommend this for long distance shooting. There are better choices.

Way off topic. I’ve noticed that aero has new “pro” ambi lowers for $299. To me, they look like an exact duplicate of pws mk1 mod 2 ambi lower, again for $299. Then, there’s the radian adac for $514….which I honestly love the mag release/bolt catch combo. I cannot say I have trust in aero since it’s new and I’ve never really dealt with AP anything. Pws has a solid review category and years of use. Radian is just the apple of my eye but that price is ridiculous. $214 discrepancy. I’ve spoke to you before about a build with adac lower, mur w/fa upper, cmt mod 3 quad rail, and Geissele 12.5” barrel. You replied “sounds expensive”…which is 100% true! What’s your favorite build that you’ve come across?

@@FocusTripp thank you graciously. I can begin to ponder the “complicated” with the amount of knowledge you’ve accrued. I, am actually eyeballing a cmt billet set, their gen 3 uhp15a ambi. It’s really nice, but doesn’t get that 1 little thing I want, a bolt catch on the right side! I’m honestly running an iwi Zion tac 12 (12.5) that I’ve used as a learning tool through this. I like mechanical work and been shooting since single digits…but hadn’t been into it for a while getting burned out as a teen working at a game club and shooting skeet competitively. Nothing crazy but did the trigger, trigger guard, forward assist, and bolt catch (rolled pin work to build confidence) and buffer to kynshot with tubbs flatwire. Swapped gas block to adjustable. Etc etc. oh, and I have a Redi-catch/release that I train with so it’s a must (like adac!! Dammit!$$$) but will build a final version and replace all oem components and resell the Zion thanks for all you’re info, I may even be purchasing from you to make things easier for myself.

@@traviswinegarden355 I've got a 2-20 nx8. I think aside from the stupid effing turrets that handicap this thing, the vcog is better. For the military, it makes much more sense to use AA batteries which everyone is already having to pack and use a laser. Everyone has a laser and passive aiming isn't a military thing. A LAM has more than enough range for riflemen and for further distance use a NV or thermal scope on the 240s.

The answer to all of this is easy: keep it simple. The rifle squad exists to bring multiple platforms to the fight e.g. designated marksman, automatic rifleman etc…unlike civilians that think they have a do it all rifle, the military realizes there is no such thing. In a no shit firefight you aren’t adjusting a damn thing.
