I think the RMR DI was probably made based on some DOD requirements for an optic that required almost 0 maintenance or logistics support and Trijicon either had too much stock or believes in releasing more gov contract product to the civilian market. Either way is cool with me for an optic I’ll probably never need/buy.

I've had one of these on an FNX-45-T for the last 7 years or so. I'd have to agree that there are certain situations where it is effectively useless or just gets in the way. Aiming from a dark place into a bright place or using a weapon light, you're just going to have to use irons through it. Otherwise, 95% of the time, it's okay. I wouldn't buy another one, but I don't regret it at all; it has served very well as the optic for a novelty suppressed range pistol, and I wouldn't feel too uncomfortable using it for self defense , since I know its limitations.

Literally anything … i mean THANKS GARY! I’ve considered this optic a few times just because it’s usually the cheapest rmr option. I’ve seen so many YT shills hype this optic but many forums say it’s doodoo. I wonder if the few who like it are really just using their irons through the glass. I like the idea of not needing a battery but i don’t like auto adjust. Really wish someone would make a prism optic for a pistol. An etched reticle acro style optic would be dope.

@RTTGunsGear That's the thing about the RMR, it's 15 years old and wasn't even originally designed to be a pistol dot. In my experience, the amber models are significantly better than the green dot models. I’ve got a 7 MOA amber dot model that is BRIGHT and only suffers the dot wash out problem in the most extreme cases (literally concealed in darkness and aiming out a window into full sunlight). The notch filter on the amber models isn’t nearly as pronounced either. All that said, the DI model sits on a “range” gun and my EDC has an adjustable LED RMR.

I sort of get why this might be a good "end of the world" optic since the fiber-optic illumination will, in theory, continue to work once your Li-ion batteries have expired, but then you're only left with a daytime optic.

The Russian Obzor is the only dual illuminated optic that I've found to be worth the time and money. It has a well designed reticle, and a lever you can throw to increase the contrast of the notch filter. Also, I miss when trijicon tried to innovate. They don't do anything new anymore, just chase the market trends.

I have been fun an RM05 9.0 Amber dot for the better part of 8 years. The amber for me seems to be a red dot and is very easy for me to pick up and see. The glass has minimal tint unlike the green version. I have ran this optic on Glock 19x, Glock 17 MOS, and I have one on an AR Pistol mounted to a Unity Tactical ANVL mount The only time this optic suffers is when you are using it in a transitional light setting. Dark to light or no light + flashlight. This is where any red dot struggles but it's definitely this model's kryptonite. And....... That's why we have backup irons. Personally, I will take this optic over any battery powered red dot any day of the week. For my rifles, I either run an RM05 on a Carry handle or I run a TA-01 (tritium illumination & croshair reticle). These are set it and forget it optics and have served me well. Countless IDPA and Black Rifle matches, multiple training classes, and my own training on my property. These optics have been flawless.

I've been running the amber version on one of my G17s for about 5 years now. I like it because I can use the top of the triangle for a 25 yard zero and the bottom is a good reference for a hundred yard hold. But I'm a rancher and it works good for me as I use it mainly for hog and predator control. It sucks carrying a rifle all day everyday. It definitely isn't for everyone and if I'm not at work I carry a 43X with a traditional red dot.

RMR was good when it first came out, and can in fact be slammed repeatedly against steel tables to rack the slide, so its ruggedness is likely second to none. But in the current year that is no longer enough - it is woefully outdated in all other aspects. The idea of a holographic dot you have training-scarred your way into relying on not being visible under certain conditions is a hard sell. I wouldn't pay money for one, and if I received one for free, I'd immediately flip it for half price on the EE.

I would say the only place where it struggles is if you're in a dim space aiming at something out in a bright space, OR when you activate your weapon mounted light which will wash out the reticle.
