I don’t recall being introduced to Maine guide named Jeff DeHart in prior videos, are we seeing your husband here, the one in the folding rifle story? It would be interesting to see you two interviewed together!

Yes. That’s my husband, Jeff DeHart. He’s very elusive…he’ll be in them, but not really ready to talk yet. He’s a great Guide and awesome poler, due to retire next year so hopefully he’ll be in more videos.

Not sure if you covered this yet but what is the best shoes/boots/ sock combination to wear on a long wilderness canoeing adventure? I see all the KZfaqrs walking their canoes through the rocky shallow waters and just wonder if they’re wearing something that doesn’t keep their feet wet all day? Don’t look like crocks. 😆

I do bean boots and wool socks when it’s cold and poly pro liner socks when it’s hot but I always keep the bean boots. I have a love hate relationship with them but need the protection they provide for a multitude of things on a canoe trip and I love with the wet feet until I get to camp where I change into dry socks and dry hiking boots.

Hi Lisa, good video and of course can you please go over the steps to have that good design for the tarp set-up? Also, you said wool, is that a wool jacket you’re wearing? Is it a Filson? What wool jacket would a Maine guide have?

Johnson Woolen Mills In Vermont made that shirt a million years ago. Still going strong and so are they. I will definitely do more videos on tarp setup and design. The key is the height coupled with a line at one of the center side grommets leading to the ground to drain the water. Thanks for watching.

Lisa, what are the dimensions of the tarp? I prefer a square, usually 10x10 suits my needs best but I’m always looking to learn 😊
@DiabloOutdoors
@DiabloOutdoors 8 ай бұрын
10x10 and square is pretty good and allows for a wide variety of setups. But the rectangular ones will do the job too, depending on the setup you want. Lean-to and Baker styles are easier if using a rectangle tarp.

I’m pretty sure it’s 12 feet by 16 feet. The smaller blue one is 9 feet by 8 feet. But I have wished on multiple occasions that the small one was a perfect square 8x8. I just love the baby blue, so do canoe guests they call it a “little piece of the sky” when it’s raining for days, and I don’t have the heart to ever cut it.

How long does it take to actually become a Maine guide? Is there a boot camp to weed out all non hackers? That has got to be a dream job...what I wouldn't give to go back 20 years and try something like that.

Guests on Canoe trips have asked me for the last 27 years how long it takes to become a Maine Guide and my stock answer from the time I was young is my whole life. It took my whole life. There are classes that you can take, I never took the classes because I knew if I got the license I would use it there’s a lot of paper guides out there and so I apprenticed I didn’t take any classes.

Are we just going ignore the fact that you've got a roaring fire UNDER your tarp? Can you talk about the do's and don'ts of this in future video, like tarp material or setup height etc...?
@DiabloOutdoors
@DiabloOutdoors 8 ай бұрын
You can have a fire under a tarp as long as the flames doesn't reach the tarp, AND that you're using the right wood. Avoid wood creating lots of sparkles and/or soot. Silnylon is the lightest fabric, but it will sag under the rain and it's not the most resistant. However, if it's silnylon ripstop 6, AND have a double waterproof coating, then it's much stronger. The Aqua Quest Defender is THE best one in that category. The other common material is Polyester. It's more durable and won;t sag when wet. However, it's heavier. Then you have the tarps bought at the hardware store, wallmart, etc.. they are cheap. unless it's the heavy duty ones (not sold at Walmart). As for the setup, there are thousands and thousands of possibilities: A-Frame, fully enclosed, semi-enclosed, lean-to, etc... A video with all of them would be like 10-15 hours long.

@@DiabloOutdoors What about something other than plastic like military style canvas or other canvas material?
@3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide

Honestly the whole point is to have a roaring fire under a tarp. It’s one of the biggest skill we use as Maine Guides. It’s the skill that separates those who can really take care of themselves in the wild and those who can’t. I’ve seen some pretty big KZfaqrs …wilderness Canoe trippers, who have a big roaring fire, in one location and a tarp set up in a totally different location. They’re cold standing under the tarp so they go out to the fire and they stand in the pouring rain with a roaring fire, which makes their body think that they’re warm drops their metabolism like a rock and eventually …inevitably they’re gonna have to step away from that fire and now they’re soaking wet. I tell you as a Guide as a Wilderness Canoe tripper it is the most bizarre thing I see on KZfaq and I see it over and over and over again but yes because I get a lot of good ideas from you guys who watch and who comment I will do a thing on I guess how to keep a roaring fire underneath the tarp it’s not that dangerous as long as the tarp is high enough and it really only has to be about 8 feet high. Plus I’m always cooking over that roaring fire so once you put the pots and pans on top of it, it’s really not going anywhere and the pots and pan direct the heat to whoever standing around it but that is a good idea and I will do a future episode.

Lisa DeHart here,mine are made of Marine grade rip stop nylon. The marine grade makes it so they don’t mold what put away wet on an extended canoe trip. Of course, even on a river, at the first opportunity to dry them, I do.

You may have a very good setup, but using a cheap tarp, and if the wind gets stronger.... then bye bye your tarp, if it's not a good one... like those bought at hardware store (the basic ones), or at Walmart. A good tarp has reinforced grommets. ALL of them. The better tarps have reinforced grommets AND a plastic triangle at each corner. THE best tarps have loops instead of grommets and the best of the best have 19 attachment points. The material also makes a difference. Silnylon is lightweight but will sag under the rain. And this, no mater the setup you're using. Tarps made of Polyester are heavier, but they don't sag. They're also much more resistant than and Silnylon even if it's Ripstop 6. Now, about the brands. There are MANY good brands out there. One of the top brands, and pretty affordable, is Aqua Quest. THE most durable tarp on the market, and still lightweight enough to carry, is the Aqua Quest Defender. This tarp will never let you down. Aqua Quest Defender 10x7 - 10x10 - 13x10 - 15x15 - 20x13 Made of 70D Nylon Waterproof rating: 20,000mm Waterproof coating: TPU and DWR (it makes the tarp even stronger) 19 attachment points They also have the Safari and the Ultra-Light Guide models. There's also another brand, entry level among the top quality. It's the Kalinko tarp. The 10x10 sells for $41 Canadian, so less in U.S. dollars. You can find them on Amazon. And of you're rich. Then the best of the best of the best... are tarps made with Dynema. They are ultra-ultra-ULTRA lightweight and almost indestructible. But get ready to spend over $350 for one of them. (ouch!).
