By the time the soul society arc came in Gin was always in the top 5 or top 10 in every bleach popularity poll up until Grimmjow and Ulquiorra took those spots

@@commonsensei9772 Yeah, but he was never doing it for anyone but Rangiku and he was more than willing to harm others in his quest. He split Hyori in half. I just think it's a misunderstanding of his character and motivations to represent it as much more than him willing to go to absolute extremes like harming innocents to protect and avenge one of the only people he seems to actually care for.

@@waynemorgan6153 Yeah, I never thought of Gin as a "good guy". For me he was always a villain with a good intention: preventing and even greater evil to rise. His love for Rangiku does seem real tho, which makes him all the more gray. Despite being cold hearted and even eager to murder he still cares about someone enough to devote his life on a mission. I love how Bleach didn't try to redeem him with that cheap last moment flashback like many animes have, they just showed that despite being a villain he still had someone he loved and that does not redeem him in the slightest but adds a bit of humanity to him.

Bro ichigo has 5 race in hin he is exceptional and very special person in bleach while aizen achieved everything with time and ichigo with short training and aizen never lost to ichigo in anime or in manga

Pretty insane to think if it wasn’t for the Hogyoku. Aizen would really have died but then I thought Aizen would’ve never let his guard down like this if he didn’t have it.

I don't know why people compare him to Itachi. Gin wasn't trying to protect the Soul Society. He wanted revenge. Gin is more like a better written Sasuke.

@@UtopiansDream I think the comparison comes from Gin playing/carrying the role of villain for years like Itachi did, hell Gin pretended for a century. Even if revenge was his motive that doesn't make his sacrifice less. I mean if you break it down Itachi did what he did for Sasuke and Gin did what he did for Rangiku the only two people they loved.

You're 100% right and I think that's why I like him. People compare him to Itachi which is an apt one, but while Itachi is more white leaning on the morality scale, Gin is closer to black. Itachi, for the most part, isn't malicious and his love is altruistic because he cares about humanity, and most of all his brother. Whereas, Gin likes torturing people and getting under their skin. His love is for Rangiku and her alone (possibly a little for Izuru). Rangiku's love seems more romantic leaning, his seems to transcend that - along the lines of, "I love you so much that I will sacrifice my life and my humanity to get back what was taken from you, possibly hurting you in the process." It is INCREDIBLY selfish and borderline sociopathic, but in his eyes that is what it means to love. And what I like about his character (and Itachi, and add Severus Snape to this list of grey characters) is that he knows he's not a good person. He's acting on the love he knows; he's not asking for forgiveness. He briefly wonders about redemption with his "love a snake" monologue, but he's made peace with that Rangiku may never love him again or forgive after everything he's done, regardless of his intentions. Knowing this, he still acted on his love. And in a kinda twisted, beautiful way - Rangiku knows this and loves him for it (we see this when she's grieving him). Their relationship is complex; I wouldn't call it a model example of a healthy relationship, but it is compelling to watch.

​@@courtneylovett8307disagree. Gin is way more light grey compared to Itachi's dark grey. Not only are his crimes way less significant than Itachi's but he's also shown to be able to express regrets and empathy.

@@alicewonderland1380 We don't know how long Gin has lived, but let's say, based on the Turn Back the Pendulum arc, he lived over 100 years. That is significantly more time, and I guarantee you he commited more atrocities under Aizen (whose every action was significant to the story) than Itachi who lived only 21 years as a Leaf shinobi and an Akatsuki member. Crime count aside, I'm speaking to moral intentions here. We are given no evidence that Gin cares about the greater good or anyone outside of Rangiku (maybe Izuru but that is a stretch), whereas Itachi cares about peace, his village, his clan, and his brother. It's canon that war made Itachi a pacifist. While both characters' actions, if accomplished, would lead to positive outcomes-the big bad's defeat-Gin acted purely out of revenge (selfish desire to single-handedly kill the person that hurt the one he loves) and restoration (getting back Rangiku's soul piece), while Itachi acted out of peace (altruistic desire to prevent war and more bloodshed) and retribution (molding his brother to restore their clan and bring justice to Itachi for his crimes). Now of course, both their plans failed to varying degrees. With their on screen actions, you can make the argument that everything Itachi did, including re-traumatizing Sasauke, was for a "good reason." The only action that seemed malicious and unnecessary for his goals was torturing Kakashi's mind for three days. With Gin, it's the other way around. Most solo actions he does are cruel and vindictive, often unnecessary-breaking Rukia's spirit, cutting Hyori in half knowing Aizen would have no issue with her. He actually enjoys torture to a degree. To be fair, his actions under Aizen could have been to keep his cover but I stand by the above two examples being unnecessary. Keeping Rangiku at a distance and walking away from conflict when she's there could also be framed in a selfish intention not to hurt the one he loves. If Rangiku didn't show, he most certainly would have killed Momo or anyone else. The only on screen action that seemed altruistic to me was tearing down Ichigo's spirit during their fight as a way to motivate him to get stronger, much like how Itachi handled Sasuke. Because his words helped Ichigo reach the level needed to defeat Aizen (as seen in Gin's final thoughts). You mentioned Gin expressed regrets and empathy, which you're right, but so did Itachi. His entire arc during the War was him expressing regret and empathy, taking accountability for the hell he put Sasuke through, and that his impossible decision to kill his clan might have been the wrong choice, that there might have been another way. Both characters are grey, but all the reasons above are why I say Itach is more light grey compared to Gin's dark grey.
