Creating UTM parameters (also known as UTM tags, UTM tracking codes, or Urchin Tracking Module parameters ) is a very important part of digital marketing - mostly because it allows you to measure everything you do and optimize along the way, at a very granular level.
If you do it the right way, every single action you take for your online marketing efforts can be quantified.
Creating UTM codes to track your campaigns on Google Analytics takes only two minutes, and the high-level overview behind it is the following:
The goal: to easily create and keep a database of all the UTM URLs for the different campaigns you are executing and which drive traffic back to your website.
The ideal outcome: consistent usage of UTM parameters across your team, across platforms, and across campaigns, which makes it very easy to understand the actual impact of the campaigns you are executing in a third-party tool like Google Analytics.
The importance of this action: this will allow you to assess how effective your marketing is. It’s often very difficult to find consistent usage for UTM URLs, but if you do it the right way, it makes measurement super-easy.

Hi, this is a very helpful overview, detailed, and clear. With the update to the Google Analytics interface, where would I be able to see the results of the UTM tracking URLs I've created? Everything seems to have moved from the older version of Analytics. Thanks again!

You should see it in the corresponding sections based on what your UTM parameters are, campaign, channel etc.

Hello, I have a question. Do the UTM tracking stays only for one session? Or If the visitors delays the purchase for next day, will it be reflected in the campaign results via Google analtytics on that UTM parameters? What is clicks other link later with different UTM parameters?

It's only if those params are visible in the user's address bar, so usually only one session, correct. If a user clicks a link with a different UTM parameter, that parameter will receive credit. Your question is related to first-click and last-click attribution, you should look both of those up :) good luck!

Fantastic, very helpful. Quick one and probably a stupid question. Can I just use a link I create for google adwords in the builder and place in final URL in adwords without setting up tracking template

@@clickminded The link takes you to the website, which has no link to the Sheet. If you enter an email for the resources from the webpage it actually sends a Google Doc about GA and GTM setup, not a spreadsheet about UTM parameters....

This may be a really stupid question but does the link stay like that for the public to see the utm parameters as well? If I'm trying to track traffic from social media accounts and an email using lots of utm parameters but it looks really long and unprofessional..so curious to know whether this link you have created is just for your google analytics and then if you would need to embed the code onto the website so that the link remains clickminded.com for people clicking on your ad/banner/email etc Great video btw!!

Thanks! Yes, it needs to be public. But you can use a URL shortening service that redirects users if you'd like. Bitly.com is a good example of a tool you can use

@@clickminded thanks for your response. What is your opinion of changing urls that contain utm parameters into vanity urls? Does this effect campaign tracking/analytics do you think as I was really excited that my long list of parameters could look so much cleaner if transformed into a vanity url But just a little confused whether a vanity url is the same as putting my url through a url shortening service?

Yep, so this would be the same thing. A vanity URL would be more work on your end - you need to manage all your redirects on your own and you need a spreadsheet at the minimum to do it - but if you're cool with managing that, go nuts! We do this all the time :)
