We caught up with the Danaher Death Squad in NYC ahead of Kasai Pro 2. Gordon Ryan was training in the gi, Nicky Ryan training heel hooks for his match against Geo Martinez on April 14th and John Danaher was dropping wisdom as usual.

It says so much about those guys that they let Craig into their school. Is there a world class champion in their gym in the same weight class as Craig. I could see that being much cooler then with the other athletes. But honestly, i think Danaher has always be open with his knowledge. Maybe right before a fight in camp he will be different, like when he helped GSP, and only talked about strategy afterwards. But afterward,s he was always open about what strategy he had. So respect a guy who is confident enough to share his knowledge.

Aidan Thorne Danaher has really terrible hip and knee problems. They’ve been plaguing him since he was a young adult. I believe he got hit by a car or something, and New Zealand didn’t have the proper surgical capabilities (in the 90s) to properly fix him up. So overtime things have added up and he’s basically constantly in pain. That being said- I’m surprised to see him moving and showing techniques so much. He speaks about it in more detail on the episode of the joe rogan podcast he’s on.

Yes OR No. Craig and his team were doing just fine anyways. Have you seen olympians like Olympain judo players, wrestlers training in their rivals' home soils? No they don't. If needed, they exclusively invite a good coach to their country for their athletes. Do you know the reason why Japanese judo players don't like to compete that much often at international tournaments? although they get better seeded at Olympic games when they have higher scores form those competition? Because they want to expose themselves as least as they can. Korean Judo players were doing very well before the last Olympics at different international tournaments but they didn't do that well at the last Olympics? you know why? it's because they got exposed too much thus their opponents analysed them very well already. Jiu Jitsu is still a minor sport that is not supported on the national level because it's not one of the Olympic games. Most people do it as a hobby. Therefore, many do it based on bro-science. I get what you are saying too but for Craig, it, being there for a long period of time would work against him unless he wants to join DDS. DDS guys and Danaher must have analysed Craig greatly. From some people, it's possible its benefits outweigh the costs but for Craig who competed very well against Gordon already, the costs must be greater. Not to mention, DDS is well known for being secret about their special techniques and Jiu Jitsu ideas.

Where I train, many students, including black belts come in and out of our gym. Just last night a well respected black belt in our area came to teach a class, my instructor/coach his demo partner. One of the most beautiful things I've seen happened on the mat during drills. My instructor was asking the visiting black belt to demonstrate the details of the drill to him, while us other students were drilling. It was as if they were both students themselves which we all are, no matter the rank. TLDR - When ego is eliminated from the equation, there is limitless room for expansion. IDK just my take on it. Craig jones seems like a pretty laid back dude for such a killer on the mat.

Gordon is fucked in the Gi. It's a whole different game, it's so heavily control based and especially grip based. Gordon is used to No-Gi, very little control, due to little friction, grips are not emphasized. It's also far more technical, on the highest level, every detail matters, a small mistake costs you an entire match. When Gordon fights a high-level guy like Erbeth, Felipe Pena, Leonandro Lo, Buchecha, Galvao, Keenan, Evangalista, Aly, Igor Silva, Faria, Arges, Romulo, I'll even say a lightweight like Lepri could beat him, he's going to get merked by all the high level guys. I'll bet my left testicle he'll never be an IBJJF Gi world champion, as a black belt. The fact he goes out of his way on social media to exhibit his detest for the Gi, indicates he dislikes the style, he's unfamiliar with it and he's not have major success with it, can't wait for him to get humbled in the Gi.
