Excellent video demonstration and review! I noticed that they have a “pro” version for $7 more which made the price $52 (in US$). Shipping to Dallas, TX is $15. I thought that was reasonable so I ordered one. I like supporting small businesses.

The pot stand could easily be fixed by simply having the top bent part bd longer and farther into the stove rather than that half centimeter of resting space. They could also add a fourth stand so it wont be as easy to have to much weight on one side when placing a pot like he seemed to do.
@benthere8051
@benthere8051 2 жыл бұрын
@@aaroncarapace8054 I know it means extra parts but I like the idea of criss-cross plates with notches deep enough for alcohol and one side with notches deep enough for wood. The criss-cross plates would also solve the problem of needing to take so much care when using the 750 mL pot.

I just recently got a little Goshawk aluminium alcohol burner that is pretty neat, the jets point inward and create a vortex of flame once bloomed. The first one I recieved leaked badly at a faulty seam and the company quickly dispatched a replacement. The base is slightly smaller than my Trangia so it doesn't fit exactly in some stoves designed for it but that is usually easily rectified.

Mark, I just got the redesigned “pro” version of this stove (available as of Jan 2022). I haven’t used it as a wood burner yet, only with the Goshawk siphon alcohol stove. In alcohol mode, there’s really no difference between the new pro and what you tested in the video. Incredible performance. At sub-freezing temps but water at 35 F, I got 2 cups of water to boil in 5 minutes on .6 oz of alcohol. Now that temps are well above freezing, my boil is down to 4 minutes, using 0.5 oz of alcohol. Anyway, in terms of mating this stove with a pot, you’re right - something like the Toaks 750ml is the minimum sized pot you can go with. However, it’s a tight squeeze and you really can’t fit it in if you want to wrap a banana or something around the stove, to protect it from any leftovers in the pot, or keep soot from the stove from getting into the pot. I’ve found the better mate to be either the Pathfinder Titanium Bush Pot or the SoloStove 900 stainless steel pot. Irrespective of posted volumes (1.1 l versus 900 ml) the pots are really the same size. The stainless steel option is actually $5 more than the titanium pot when neither are on sale, but the SS pot seems to always be on sale, making it $10 less USD. That’s not enough of a savings to sway me. It’s really a preference in material at that point, with the ti Bush Pot coming in at 2 oz less weight and also having a bail handle. If you don’t have the Goshawk Siphon Alcohol Burner, I suspect you can get similar results using either your Lixada or Toaks siphon stoves. I wouldn’t have this neat stove if it wasn’t for your channel. I really look forward to playing with the pro version as a wood gasifier stove. I suspect it will perform better than the BushBuddy. Thanks for the great reviews. I have watched a lot of your videos and have enjoyed all of them. Please keep referring to your video description as the “show notes.” Not sure if that’s unique to you or Canadian vernacular but I find it to be a pleasant phrase.

@@MarkYoungBushcraft one of the problems with real cooking on alcohol stoves, as opposed to just boiling water, is that they tend to burn the contents of your pot if you’re not careful, assuming the stove does not have a simmer function. I’ve tried covering the bottom intake ports on the Goshawk Eddy wood burning stove when used with the siphon stove and it had no effect. My next idea is to get a ring to cover the jets of the siphon stove, so that the flame would be weak, coming out the stove’s center hole. We’ll see. Anyway, it got me to thinking about your reviews and one product you may not be familiar with. The Four Dog Stove Heat Diffuser. It’s a piece of titanium that goes under your pot. It has feet that lift your pot off its base, so that there’s another avenue of heat transfer that has to be crossed in order to get to your pot. Sadly, unusually high shipping to Canada, while free to the US. I wonder if you have a friend stateside for such cases, that can then forward the package to you for a couple of bucks. I’m, looking forward to your thoughts on simmering with siphon alcohol stoves, and if you’ve ever used a heat diffuser.

Hi Mark, they say this on their website, wondering how you stand one stove on top of the other: “Damp wood can still burn. The Goshawk siphon alcohol stove can dry and ignite them below; this makes the starting of the woodstove reliable and straightforward. You only need to consume a small amount of alcohol.”

Great review and it seem like a really good stove, especially considering the price! My 2 cents, although I haven't this specific stove, my experience with other wood gas stoves is that bigger stoves are much easier to get to the point where the secondary gasification take place, and also, they require much less refilling and other fiddling to work. This is about the smallest size that is practically possible to use and it will require pretty much a constant active work. I haven't tried wood pellets, it seem like once it's properly on fire, it just keep on working, so this is just my observation using a wood gas stove with sticks. And also, 4 minutes to bring 2 cups of water to a boil with the alcohole stove option is really fast, although fast isn't nescessarily better. Usually, the faster boil time, the more heat is wasted going outside the pot instead of actually heating the water. I have a DIY alcohole stove using half an ounce of fuel to boil 2 cups of water in almost every condition, in extremely cold and/or windy conditions, I use 2/3 of an ounce, just to be sure. The boil time is about 7:30, pretty slow, but I don't mind a few minutes waiting time, I usually put up the tent and blow my sleeping pad up during cooking. This is just observations, not nescessarily problems. For those who love tinkering with their wood stoves, this is just a part of the charm... for others it might be a deal breaker. And for those who don't mind carrying a few ounces extra of alcohole fuel for a weeks trip, it doesn't matter either, but for those who count every single ounce of weight, there is certainly better alcohole stoves.

This looks like it would be more compatible with a 900-1000ml pot like the GSI Pinnacle Soloist - It would fit within the circumference of the foam insulated bowl inside the pot and a Trangia burner would fit inside the Goshawk; this would mean you have two ways to cook, alcohol at first and wood for when the alcohol runs out... Pretty nice bugout cookset...

I bought one of these a couple of months ago, and took it on a backpack trip in late October. Had the devil of a time getting water to boil. I normally use a solo stove, but feeding wood as I did for the Solo just would not work. (perhaps if I'd vertically loaded?) Thankfully I had my Toaks alcohol, and it worked great with the Goshawk. Haven't tried pellets. I'll be thoroughly testing a home before again substituting it for the solo again. I was too enthralled with the weight saving.

Ended up ordering the Pioneer Pro with the enxtendable pot stand and pot supports that fold in and out. The atomic looked tempting but simillar in weight to the Toaks Small wood stove with similiar dimenions. The Pioneer pro seems to solve some of the issues you have by creating a higher exhaust and better pot stability. Thanks for your review. The pioneer pro seems to be the missing link between the emberlit fireant and the firebox nano in terms of weight, speed, capacity and performance.

Good overview. I bought this stove about a year ago. The one i received did not have the flip up pot height adjusters. It looked great in the video they had which interestingly did not show it with a pot sitting on top. It turns out that is because there is simply not enough air holes once you pot on and will start smoking horribly. They must have realized this abs added the flip up extensions. Without this, the stove is junk. I emailed them about it and they never responded so basically I feel like I got ripped off which is too bad. I'm glad they fixed the design flaw at least.

A small pot is good for a day hike, or maybe an overnighter, but it limits the user on a longer hike in terms of the volume of food that someone burning 4,000 calories/day can cook, and, of course, the greater the surface area of the bottom, the better the heat transfer to the contents. Another thing to consider is that it's hardly worth risking a food spill just to have a smaller package within one's pack. I reasoned that there is no real loss of internal storage inside of a backpack using a larger cook set, as long as the pot is used for storage of small items. Maybe some day I will be able to appreciate walking into the forest nearby just to make a cup of coffee or soup, but I enjoy walking in a straight line for at least a week, whenever I can escape daily chores close to home. I gave up on gasification stoves. It seems to be a small thing to minimize smoke, when it costs me extra weight of another wall in the stove, plus the time spent and waste of fuel waiting for the stove to gasify, because the pot still collects soot. There is the curiosity factor, however. Using fire from a multitude of fuels efficiently in a variety of burn chambers is a good physics study. As Spock would have said, "Fascinating!" I appreciate your in-depth analysis of the items which you test. Thanks once again, my friend. May God keep you in good health. 🙏👍 One more thing: I think that the lightest portable cooking fire kit would ideally be a very basic stick holder/pot support, a fireproof, flat ground sheet, and a good 360 degree wind screen. The Sukuk skeleton-style titanium "stoves"(stick holders, really) would make a good start, paired with a rollable titanium foil windscreen with intake holes punched around the lower perimeter.

I always preferred a cross-stand, just two strips of sheet-metal with half-way slots in the middle to connect and two slots each to go onto the top walls of the stove. If you go a little off-center, you can put another set of slots to the other side and realise two height positions as well. Cut to the exact height of the chamber you can store it inside the stove and never have to struggle with small pots again. IMHO well worth the few additional grams of weight.

Want to send you a meetsun stove with a modification I did using a rootless replacement mesh to handle the coals that fall and can start underbrush fires. I cut a circular size folded the ends and burned the wood inside I had a liquid drain out and found out it was wood pine oil from duraflame kindling. But no coals fell thru. I then did a comparison without it and the result was bad against natural underbrush. Also I used my lixuda alcohol stove but placed it at the bottom of the wood cup. It focused the heat perfectly to the top. The meetsun has a grill grate that can hold any type of cup or pot. Your the best in reviews when it comes to small wood stoves in my opinion. I also did the same with gel and it worked perfectly. I don’t know if it’s the gasification of air that helps focus the flame or that it’s a better wind break when place in the wood cup. But your suppose to turn the wood cup upside down and place the stove on the bottom to raise the flames to heat objects. It comes with a liquid fuel plate, but used it with gel…placed at the bottom as fully constructed and it worked perfectly again. What am I doing right or doing wrong. My mesh screen was what I was trying to use to save people from potential fires. But manufacturing said to turn wood cup upside down and place other fuels to make closer to heat pot or cup. But when money is available will send stove and mesh or you can get yourself. But the rootless replacement mesh screen works when there is a fire advisory and there is no other method to heat food or water. Haven’t tried it with wood pellets yet but will do 😉. Your reason I bought that particular model. One that I could afford. Still the best!!!!! Semper Fi

Got my stove about a week ago, and several alcohol burns in it, but today seemed like a good day to test the hardwood pellets (blowing wind & snow). How right u are, 1/2 cup of pellets & a bit of alcohol, and it goes right up, little to no smoke! I was going for a 2nd pot of water when a big gust of wind pushed my windscreen & everything in my lap, pot of warm water & stove full of hot coals. Almost peed myself LoLz 🤣 (next time I have to secure my windscreen, guy it out or something) Tho, I was used to using the Evernew Ti alcohol stove, Boundless Voyage copycat, without a pot stand, just setting my pot on the top ring of jets after it had bloomed, makes for a very efficient burn 1oz alcohol will boil 2 cups of water, tho takes awhile, I'm in no rush. But the new Lixada siphon, burns hot and fast - I was testing it on the kitchen table, and it put off more fumes than I anticipated, I got gassed, a lil CO poisoning: migraine & nauseous. Picked up a CO detector but I'm still reluctant to test it again LoLz 😝

Thanks for the demo, but I find it's too small. For the reasons you mentioned. I bought the Firebox Nano, just to have tried out such a small stove. And it's so fiddly I'll only use it in the drier months of the spring. The problem being, I believe, is the size of the fuel chamber. If the wood is moist, you'll need time to heat and dry the fuel before it burns, so you'll fill up the chamber with wood that doesn't burn yet. Giving very little space for wood that actually burns, and a very small and weak flame. When the moisture is at the same time mostly on the outside of the wood, so the finer the wood you're forced to use the wetter it is. While if you can have a stove large enough to run on wood about an inch thick, you can mostly find wood that can burn and give off some heat (not just dry your next batch of firewood) even in winter. I tried to use the Firebox Nano early this autumn, and even then I was having a constant firelighting situation. And ended up making my lunch mostly on birch bark, whenever I found it. As birch bark and fatwood can burn even when wet, and the birch bark is easy to peel off rotting birches lying around, if they're just "ripe" enough. But I got tired of looking for birch bark, water and a good place to sit at once, on my day trips. So now I run on alcohol. There's so many loose parts on the Firebox that can easily be lost in the snow, that I won't dare run that during winter. And my Firebox Titan is getting rusty. So what I'm looking for, really, is a titanium gasifier stove with some space. And with a real bottom that won't get too hot. As I won''t just use it in the snow, it can be hard to find a good place free of vegetation sometimes.

Hi I've just came across these stoves and have a couple of questions. 1) are these safe indoors if they burn off CO? 2) If the mechanism of gasification if achieved by heating the outside wall, wouldn't it achieve this quicker if you originally put fire starters around the outside rather than in the centre?
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 10 ай бұрын
First, the stove would not be safe to use indoors with wood. It will still give off carbon monoxide. Second. The process of pyrolysis occurs when the wood is heated to just below ignition. Wood gas is released and mixes with the oxygen introduced through the jets. It helps that this air is hot but is not required. Thanks for commenting

@@MarkYoungBushcraft Goshawk just announced (1/19/22) a revised “pro” version of their stove you reviewed, which increases the weight from 100g to 135g but also increases the height of their burn chamber to maximize wood burning performance. They’ve also redesigned the pot stand. It sounds like it’s a design sort of like the BushBuddy, where you remove and flip a component to expose the secondary burn holes and extend the firebox, while the lower position is reserved for alcohol and storage (it will still nest in a 700 ml pot). Looks a little frankensteinish with those rivets, but that’s pretty darn cheap for titanium. So long as it works, and they stay solid, then who cares what it looks like. I hate degassifiers though. I think they’re just a gimmick. At least in the sense that who cares if they’re a little more efficient…..they’re just sticks, we have plenty of those around. Plus I hate stoves that need to have the pot lifted to feed. Though I do have to admit, that with wood pellets, a smokeless fire that burns a long time would be really useful for using in a park or something like that, where a fire may be frowned on.
