Double brown is mustard for a rewire where you can’t take the feeds to the switches, you don’t have to mark the switch lines or worry about the switch lines getting mixed up.

I was ALWAYS taught that in ALL cases the cpc (earth wire) MUST ALWAYS go the the circuit accessory (light switch, socket etc,) FIRST then to the back box, as for the instal, I would never have a situation where one circuit with an earth fault takes out other circuits, not since the advent of RCBOs, so MCB ustream and a full RCBO board in the garage.

nick in Ireland as you probably know we are using brown / brown t&e for lighting Circuits for more than 30 years get for 3 plate method but now the 2 plate method has become the standard in domestic installations as for the earth sure cable the t&e cable here has the cps the same size as current carrying conductor this has made the cable a little harder to clip as the clips do not fit the cable so we now use 2.5 clip for 1.5 and 6 mm for 2.5 and 4 mm t&e works like a dream.

On TN systems I don’t think there’s a need to RCD armoured cables even when buried as they have an earthed metal sheath. My preference would be to MCB protect the SWA and have separate RCBOs for each circuit, then a single earth fault doesn’t trip everything.

I never undserstood why in UK so much SWA is used ( and always the wrong colors never blue/brown/yello-green ) .. We can't do this using a black wire for earth and just sleeving green-yellow over it . ( seems allowed in uk and commonly done ) Seems also pain to terminate . In Belgium we never use it ...we use XVB ( Cca )/XGB(hallogen free Cca) and normal plastic stuffing glands for a job like this .. But we have TT systems at residential houses. ( alway own earth rod or loop in fundatons ) AND a main RCD of 300mA ( wich we also use as main switch in the board ) . And then we can have 30mA RCD with max 8 MCB after it ( latest new regulations ) . We cannot have 1 circuit that is NOT RCD protected . Cant see if the SWA from the main board is already RCD protected or not . ( in Belgium it needs to be at least behind a 300mA RCD in main board or would not aprove inspection ) Anyway like the video's to see how different electrical work is on the island uk compared to the mainland europe lol

@@kittsdiy as far as i know there isnt any SWA with brown, blue, g/y colourway available only brown, black, grey, (it used to be red, yellow, blue but we harmonised it to EU standards back in 2005). Because of that we're allowed to sleeve the cores and as long as they're easily identifiable at each termination its all good.

Nicely done video Sir Nick! Switch wire colours in Australia are red and white. Yeah, we're still using old colours for fixed wiring, but "new" for flex cables. Our twin and earth are however the same conductor size, generally stranded, and CPCs are fully insulated (since the 1970's I think.

Might have to look into buying one of those linking cables. linking out works well in the installation you had there. It can't be used where you have bonding or supplementary bonding, CPCs from two or more different circuits etc due to parallel paths you can partly do it by taking the cpc's of on of the circuits out of the board and then do it with the rest in the domestic world it is usually 2 way switch with two circuit cpc's immersion heaters and C.H.

Couple things, MCB feeding that garage board and RCBO's inside the garage, no circuit shall effect safe operation of any other circuit - split load and one RCD covering multiple circuits just doesn't really adhere to that regulation anymore with the advent of RCBO's. Also due to the length of run I think you're possibly over the distance required for local surge protection in the garage, might want to double check that before they have an EV point put in as that will want a local RCBO too not one inside the house.

I sent my x1 back as it started to do some very odd things, odd random tests not selected and not turning on & seemed more effort to use. My old 1720 still going as is 1652C and my old Robin KMP4116DL although the Type A is killing it as it dumps DC onto the circuit to stop the old AC RCDs from tripping. Might get a 1741+ for EVs, but where I am there is no demand for them. It depends on where the armoured is running for me. In a garden low level where it could be damaged RCD front end, I've seen too many exposed / damaged / chewed SWAs over the years. (fencing company drops cable off, hits it, splits the armouring leaving a gap and then hides the damage) High up or on wall reducing the risk then MCB front end RCBOs at the board.

One thing I would have done here is leave the SPD in the garage board, since it came with the board already. Sure it isn't required, but since tools typically used in a garage can generate surges, the extra SPD can help. (It would also provide extra protection to an EV charger.) Now if the SPD wasn't included with the board already, it would be something I'd probably suggest as an upgrade.

@mxslick50
@mxslick50 2 ай бұрын
@@NBundyElectrical Absolutely correct, it isn't needed but the concept of "layered" SPD protection is recommended in many situations. It becomes more important where lots of electronics are involved. (I used to install high end cinema rooms in multi million dollar homes. The equipment alone totalled in low to mid six figures. So thecadded cost of extra SPD devices was chump change.) As I said, since it was part of the board as purchased, it wouldn't have done any harm to leave it in.
