I swear 99% of movie and TV Show doctors would be fired and lose their license. You get a room, you call the family in, you break the news, you let them take it in, answer any and all their questions, you can also leave the room to let them express themselves. You don't give them a damn pat on the back

I wholeheartedly agree that food is one of the most important parts of mob movies and when done well, it really sells the hospitality of mafia families and just makes me wanna cook. This movie has none of that. Also I noticed the color pallette of lots of classic mob movies is very warm, inviting. It gets cold and green/blue when the characters are in a bad spot. This movie's coloration is always dull and grey and boring.

People underestimate things like adding food to the movie, but it really humanizes these otherwise unrelatable figures. Watching them eat and chill like a regular family and as normal dudes helps us connect to them emotionally. They're not murderous characters in those moments, they're hungry humans like the rest of us. Jesus fuck, I'm fat as hell.

The food bit is also important because it helps to humanize the characters. Italians have strong family values and the way they tend to show it is through food. So having them sitting down to a meal, preparing a meal, talking over food helps build depth and heart in the characters or inversely causes unease and tension when something fucked up is happening while they're eating or something. Like you follow a dude as he and his family make some pasta. It's all warm and sunny and they spend all day palling around, smooching their babies, corralling kids to keep them out the kitchen and then they sit down and some gangsters walk in and it's like a record skip. Suddenly things are tense. The gangsters sit down, they grab a plate, they eat, they say it's good but they're obviously not there for some spaghetti so you're just sitting there waiting for it and it goes on and on and the tension rises until....they get up to leave......and then they shoot the guy. The food is just as much a character in gangster films as the people who eat it, so not having it just sucks he soul out of scenes where it belongs.

Fun fact regarding gangster movies and food kinda: Francis Ford copalla has a restaurant / winery in California and each item on the menu has a small narrative memory about why he included it in his restaurant. Also it has ac small museum of godfather memorabilia which is cool too

As an Italian myself, Ralph is dead on with the food section. You really have no idea how important a meal is until you've spent some time with Italians. I was on a diet once and failed because my family thought I wasn't getting enough to eat.

You made a very good point about the food. Food and cooking is a very important part of Italian American culture. Any time theres a family get together, theres food everywhere and your grandmother, aunts, uncles, and every other person in the building wont be happy until youve eaten so much you think you might actually die. Not having any food scenes in any film about an italian family is going to make it feel off.

My pulse starts to race every time I watch that scene from Goodfellas where Karen is yelling at Henry and throwing his contraband at him, like the same kind of discomfort you feel when you see a couple having a bad fight in public. Nothing in Gotti elicits that.

So glad u mentioned the food, that was seriously the most angering part of the movie for me. I'm Mexican but I had a best friend who was Italian and not ONCE did I ever leave their house hungry. If anything I had to get bigger pants every time I went over cuz we ate so damn much.

My uncle was a court bailiff in NYC at the time of his trial, and actually held escorted Gotti into the courtroom one day. He said that even though Gotti was in cuffs, he was still very intimidating and said he seemed confident that he wasn’t going to prison.

Its like 3 am and she still makes an entire meal and they sit down, eat, talk, laugh and all the while there is a body in the trunk. And it is arguably the most memorable scene in the whole movie

My dad actually had met/seen the real John Gotti before he passed. He was doing research for law school and got to visit the prison he was at in Illinois. The guard asked my dad if he knew who he was, he didn't. The guard gave a simple reply "that's John Gotti" and that was it.

The 1996 movie, "Gotti" was much better. The performance by Armand Assante was excellent and the cast was superb. It was just prior to "The Sopranos" so many of the cast wasn't quite as known at that point, but would later show up in the hit show. And it was historically very good as well. The actors even closely resembled many of the real people they were playing in the 1996 movie. Maybe not William Forsythe as Sammy Gravano, but he still did a good job overall.
