LYRICS
Seventeen seconds and I'm over it
Ready for the disconnect
Putting on a brave face
Trying not to listen
to the voices in the back of my head
(But it's alright now)
It's a distant memory baby
(It's alright now)
You know you should just let it go
But some feelings have a habit of persisting
even though you wouldn't let it show
Wearing me out
(All this)
Hanging around
(It just starts)
Getting me down
('till I'm just)
Looking for an easy way out
Braindead from boredom
I'm led to distraction
Scratching the surface of life
Nothing really happens
But it's easy to keep busy
When you tell yourself you're traveling right
(But it's alright now)
Was it really worth it baby?
(It's alright now)
Was it just a waste of time?
Keep on second-guessing
Use my memory like a weapon
On everything I try

Clorox bleach "only song that passed 100 million" is 10 million views not enough to be considered popular. I promise you that 4 out of 5 people who listen to music know who Gotye is. Like chill out, he's not some under ground indie artist; he's one of the most mainstream out there.

i feel like most people, like "one hit wonders," is that their most famous song is their best song. Somebody that I used to Know is good, but Gotye's the kind of guy where if you listen to more of his stuff it's even BETTER than what he's known for. i love the artistic-ness, effort, and meaning in his songs

Gotye if you ever read this, let me explain why I think this is brilliant: I interpret the length of the song as life, it's too short. Your movement is tucked as if it's your duty, and not your own will. The days start to blend in and the fire could be the the build-up inside that at the end makes you say "Screw this, I'm taking the easy way out."

Fame isn't something a talented person "deserves" or ideally should strive for. The expression of the art in the chosen medium is its own reward. I hope that people don't think that fame is something that somehow tallies how "good" something is. I'm saying this because lots of comments in Gotye's music videos say "oh, why isn't he more famous?" and I think that's kind of.. a disappointing mindset? idk, just me?

@@FSAPOJake I think it's a little bit of both. When you have chronic depression, it isn't always there, but there's episodes, it can stay for months and can lead to suicidal thoughts if it gets that bad. During these depressive episodes, you feel like the walking dead. You get no lasting joy out of things you actually like, nothing feels worth doing because it feels like there's no point. You feel like you're just going in circles, going through the motions, just to be back in the same spot you never moved from. It feels like a never-ending routine that you just want to be free from, and for some, that idea of freedom may include suicide. For others it might be running away, or some sort of drastic life change... or just sleeping life away until the depression wanes. All can seem like easy ways out.

You can think this music video is funny and all, but holy fuck is it dark to the point that it's scary. The majority of the middle-class has such a mundane schedule and it drives people insane. Maybe not to the house burning down, though it's a perfect metaphor. The cat burning up was a little too far, but maybe that's the point. Gotye is a fucking genius. I'd easily argue that this song is better than Somebody That I Used To Know.

Atheists Are Actually Theists. Proof? "A Theist". I Rest My Case. It's definitely better than somebody that I used to know, it's a perfect metaphor for how someone's mind starts to go crazy doing the same thing every single day, the fire slowly burns away at the house until everything is chaos and he's still calm about everything, almost resigned to his routine and his unhappiness with it

Couldn't be more satisfied :) Spotlight on Gotye everyone ! As I knew it, here finally is some brother/son from another mother of Pete Gabriel. After I bought your album I was very keen about your way to put that into video... Eyes wide open stunned me, and I guessed there's something coming up... I never ever would have imagined to depict Easy way out like that, but it's totally bang on ! :D All together with those tiny bits of comic guitar... just right. I LOVE IT ! Well, the message still made it to my brain ;)
