Gradius for PC Engine/TG-16: The almost perfect port

2 жыл бұрынJust about anyone familiar with video games from the 1980's has at least heard about Konami's Gradius series. In this video, I take a look at the PC Engine version, also available on the TurboGrafx-16 mini console. It's an enhanced port of the arcade game from 1985, and would be the perfect, definitive version if only for one major flaw... the excessive slowdown.

Love the Gradius series. I still remember the rage sometimes 😐😆. As you said, walls are your worst enemy, even more fearsome than bosses.

Fantastic video man! It's great hearing more about this one. As famous as the Gradius games are, I've never been a fan of them personally and also didn't grow up playing them so getting into shmups in 2018 and then seeing the games and how the played didn't grip me but I can appreciate them for what they offered way back.

I couldn't agree more. It was a very early game in the genre and it's pretty rough around the edges because of that. This game, along with R-Type were the go to spaceship shooters when I was a kid, and if you had an NES, there was a good chance you either had Gradius or Life Force. I'm curious if you've tried Gradius V on the PS2. Konami outsourced the development to Treasure, and it plays like a hybrid between classic Gradius and the more recent Treasure shooters at the time.

I haven't played G5 at all but knowing Treasure handled the development tells me it'd be a much more fluid experience!

You know there is a hidden version of the arcade version on the TG16 mini as well as a few other games too right? Edit: FYI, I’m writing this while watching the video so if you mention it in the video, I apologize in advance. ;) Great video btw. 👍

I was aware of some of the hidden games like Fantasy Zone, Soldier Blade Caravan Special, and Force Gear but I wasn't aware or might have forgotten of the near arcade perfect version of Gradius. Thanks for sharing that.

Great to see more people appreciating my favorite version of the game. Have you managed to find the hidden bonus stage warps in this version since releasing this review? Shocking how few sources online even speak of their existence, but they do exist!

Another reference is in ygo. We have a card straight up called gradius

Everyone I new as a kid was familiar with the NES version. I don't think that anyone was any good at it, so you're not alone.

That's awesome. I didn't start collecting Turbografx and PC Engine games until around 2014.
