The petrified forest was once a forest of trees. But because of wet, sediment and age, the trees have turned to rock. It is truly a beautiful place, some people call it the rainbow forest. I’ve been there many times.

Motels have a bad reputation because all over the US the big hotel chains started coming in forcing the smaller motels out of business. They also declined as air travel increased and there was less and less need to stay overnight while driving to a destination. Those that survived were older buildings that had less amenities. They sometimes became run down places that attracted crime in various forms which is how they developed a bad reputation. However, there is nothing wrong with them if you do your research online before you get there. Also, if you are going to drive route 66 at some point, they are more likely to be safe because they are there for tourists as part of the route 66 experience.

Route 66 is a very long road. Even parts of it are interesting, even if you cannot do the whole route. If in Texas you are close enough to see parts of it. The Petrified Forest was an ancient forest that died, the fallen trees turned to stone. There is a great old movie by the title of The Petrified Forest.

Motels are typically not as bad as they are made out in the movies. Especially the little mom and pop owned places are usually clean. The isolated locations, the low priced rooms, lack of frills, and the interesting characters you might meet on the road when you stay in one is just perfect for a movie writer with an active imagination. When I was the age of your son, my dad was in the military, and as we would drive from post to post, we would stay in road side motels. I always had great memories of them. Even now when I road trip, I prefer a road side mom and pop owned small town motel to a branded hotel. Just for the nostalgia

I don't know if you are in the west or eat but here in the east, there are a lot that are infested with bed bugs. Bed bugs were reintroduced into America about 20 years ago so they weren't any problem before that. I always check online first before booking a motel or hotel in the eastern states. Also, in the eastern states, there are no more motels run by mom and pops anymore. I haven't seen a motel run by a mom and pop in over 20 years here in the east.

I would think that the motels in more rural areas might be ok. Check the reviews, but the motels in areas where there are bigger hotels around are usually a lot more run down and not kept up as well. As an example, in the greater Los Angeles area you would likely want to stay in a hotel. But in the more rural areas along 66 the motels are likely better kept up as they maybe the only thing around. But yeah, check the reviews. Also in the cities, where there are more homeless and drug problems, the cheap motels are used as flop houses and therefore see more problems with bugs and people. So the movies show the scum to generate more attention and fear in people.

@kevinerose The last motel I stayed in the east was in Tonawanda, NY in 2007, it was mom and pop owned, and I think they also owned the bar next door. I stayed there for about 4 days while I did damage assessment with the red cross. No issues, and just as clean as the chain hotel I stayed in in Scranton, PA the week prior. I live in the south west by the way.

Changes in my life will see me relocating to Kingman, AZ. Route 66 passes right through the downtown, if you time your vacation just right, you can see a cruise, the street drags or the County Fair while there. Kingman, is also the beginining to the longest continuous stretch of Route 66 going east to Seligman. Williams, Arizona is also a nice stop, and is known as the gateway to The Grand Canyon. You can drive the 1.5 to 2 hours to the Grand Canyon, or better yet, sit back and relax on the Grand Canyon Railway train to Grand Canyon Village. Williams is a touristy little town with shops that sell all kinds of Route 66 marketed items. Still in Williams you may also want to check out Bearizona, where you drive through the park, and where bears, wolves, other critters admire all the nicely packed tasty morsels driving through. Also in Williams, they have Canyon Coaster Adventure Park which opened up not too long ago. I really enjoyed Meteor Crater on my way to Kansas, it is a nice stop on an otherwise featureless section of highway. WinslowCadillac Ranch was cool, but the drive from there to Tucumcari, New Mexico was brutal. It was a long flat section of highway made worse by driving into the setting sun. The town of Tucumcari, New Mexico will give you a good glimpse of what the towns along Route 66 must have been like in their heydey. There are some motels, eateries and stores mixed in with a lot of now dead ones, but you can see the pride and hope the town stilld holds for a rebirth and perhaps better future. I would recommend a stay in an old Motel, just ask to check out some of the rooms and grounds before giving them your payment. Great memories were staying in some of the Motels along Route 66 with my parents and sisters, playing in the pools and eating at one of the diners in town. --->Check out the KZfaq channel Sidetrack Adventures for some great content and history along Route 66.

A lot of those landscapes actually have a lot of spring fed rivers. When I lived on the South Llano, the only river to flow north in Texas, we had springs flowing out of the creek on our property as well as on the river. I kick myself in the ass daily for selling the place.

I've driven quite a lot of Route 66, but not all at once. Favorite towns include Williams, Arizona, where you can take the Grand Canyon Railroad to the South Rim. On the way back they stage a train robbery. Great fun! And Flagstaff, Arizona, a beautiful old downtown and home to Lowell Observatory. The best stretches of road are from the California State Line to Kingman, AZ and then from Kingman to Seligman. On one trip I flew to Oklahoma City and spent one day driving east to Joplin, Missouri and back and the next day driving to Amarillo, Texas and back. So much to see!

Your family would like corndogs i think! Easy to make, just make a cornbread recipe if your family/country doesnt have a mix 'home made is better'. Just make cornbread , dry your hotdogs on paper towel, insert a popsickle stick or chopstick in one end of the hot dog, roll the hot dogs in the corn bread batter and fry in hot oil until the corn bread batter is golden brown. Put on mustard or ketchup if you want. Great for summer parties with friends!

If you go to Oatman, Arizona, the burros are in the town during the Fall and Winter seasons. Due to the extreme heat in the summer, the burros go up into the mountains for the cooler temperatures. What the narrator of the video you watched did not mention was that burros are even welcomed into the stores for treats. The Petrified Forest was once a forest of trees millions of years ago. As time went by and nature did its magic, the trees fell and turned to stone, but not just plain stone, they are multi-colored in the center of what was once a tree trunk. Also, the petrified wood is heavy, just like a rock. The Petrified Forest and Painted Desert are together so you wouldn't have to spend 2 days to go to both. Route 66 also is Interstate 40 (I40) for part of the way thru Arizona, so you would be less than an hour from The Grand Canyon when you are driving on it thru Arizona. You will love the drive through the forests to get to the Grand Canyon Please look up "Slot Canyons in Arizona". Mother nature has a way of making things into beautiful and breathtaking art. Also, Arizona has amazing caverns, mountains, forests, lakes and rivers for lots of fishing. We loved camping and fishing in the mountains. Nothing like catching, cleaning, cooking, and eating fresh caught fish next to a campfire. Or smelling coffee brewing over an open campfire. I have driven back and forth across the USA several times and have stayed at many motels. I have a membership card with a motel chain that builds up points when I stay at them, then I can cash in the points for free night stays and even get upgrades to suites for being a member. Staying at motels is tricky though, not only do you want a good clean motel, but you want one in a safe area of town. The last thing you need is to be robbed or your car stolen or your possessions stolen out of your car. You have talked about renting a motorhome or RV to travel, there is a big name that you should stay away from. Watch the you tube channel of "Roaming Radfords" episode of when they rent an RV and go to Las Vegas. They have rented motorhomes from different companies and they tell which one is great and the one to STAY AWAY FROM. Motorhome come in various sizes, so there are options to fit your needs. They were able to pick out which RV they wanted to rent, get the price quoted to them, make the reservations, and it was all ready when they flew in from England. I have probably overloaded you with information and I apologize. I hope you all will get to make your dreams come true. I keep looking for an address for you so I can send you what I call "A Truckers Map". It is an Atlas that has maps of every state and major cities. This way you can decide what you want to see then plan your route. Google maps has led a lot of people (including me) to dead ends or one lane washed out roads or even in circles! My map is a large book and easy to read. It also shows and provides information on all the National Parks. OOPS! I'm doing it again! I am shutting up now. Have a blessed day!

THE DOG HOUSE!!!! IN ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO... my home town. The food is incredible. The people, so friendly, they treat you like family. You can either stay in your car and they'll come to you and take your order and bring you the food, or you can go inside and dine in. But this little stop on Central(street name)(Route 66) is one of my favorite places to eat when I've got a craving for a chile dog or a great burger. It's in downtown Albuquerque, close to (what we call) Old Town, so you can explore the original settlement from the Spaniards... but also in the east, you can go shopping in Nob Hill with all the fascinating things this city has to offer. Albuquerque definitely is a place of artists though, I will say that, because everywhere you go, there will be different shops for tattoos, art works, pottery, canvas pieces. But the food here in New Mexico is unlike anything you'll find in the entire United States. We've got it all in one place. I was born and raised here and I can't wait for your family to come and explore my state. I hope you come during the Balloon fiesta. It's the worlds largest balloon celebration. Do some research on it, you'll see what I'm talking about. It's an awesome time. But I'm so glad that at 14:51 Albuquerque, NM USA and the Dog House actually made your video appearance. Because it's definitely worth it.

Just finished 3 months of road trip and was in some of these places. As far as the Motels, I would recommend staying at these cheaper old Motels. A couple of the ones we stayed at smelled of cigarettes smoke, but we were raised around that stuff, so it didn't bother us any. The kids didn't care at all because they were more concerned about watching movies and food, and there's not any smoke in the room or anything it just smells of cigarettes. Also, I was with a friend who is an Army veteran, and both of us are trained and carry firearms for self-defense. In all of the places we went the people were really nice and we never ran into any situation where we felt like there was danger but you should always be aware of your surroundings any where you go no matter where you are on the planet I think. Just follow your gut and and if you see a place and think "nah, maybe not this place", then go by that instinct. Most places were fine and we saved a ton of money by doing this which enabled us to use that money to then do some more fun stuff, plus we're like you man, we just felt like a couple of big kids exploring and experiencing everything we could. As a tip, though, I would say make sure you get to these Motels in the daytime because you never know if they accept only cash or only credit its weird. Also, we had trouble finding available rooms at night because most of these places were full up. So check in early, then do your exploring.

Oh my, the memories! My family moved to Arizona years ago (I stayed put). We visited every year and visited Oatman every trip. Word of caution the donkeys are very protected and rule the town. Route 66 from Oatman to Kingman is a must. And you usually find wild donkeys out there too. I highly recommend the Roadkill 66 Cafe in Seligman! Great food with 'roadkill' names such as Flat Cats (pancakes) or Dead Meat Treat (Denver omelette) and more. The food is wonderful and the ambiance is too😉

Aloha! I took a road trip from the East Coast (Virginia) to the West Coast (Washington) and brought my young nephew from Hawaii and my young niece from Oklahoma on the trip. Cadillac Ranch was a disappointment... spray paint cans and related rubbish on the ground. The caddies are anti-climactic in person. 😒 Other parts of Route 66 are interesting and fun, and we had a great time overall! Audiobooks kept the kiddos (teenagers) mentally entertained during the longer stretches and in areas where the radio wasn't picking up strong signals (plus, it saved me from having to listen to their music LOL). Take full advantage of the Rest Stops along the way to stretch your legs, grab a snack or drink, and refresh yourselves before moving on. The SANTA ROSA BLUE HOLE in New Mexico, near the Route 66 Auto Museum (wonderfully friendly people) was a nice break and the kiddos took full advantage of jumping in for a swim ~ highly recommend 🤙 After a LONG day on the road, we ended up at the El Rancho Hotel and Motel in Gallup, New Mexico. We got there just before the restaurant was closing, but they accommodated the 3 of us and we came out full and content and in a great mood (somehow, we all ended up having a full-on giggle fit in the parking lot after dinner). It's a wonderfully decorated establishment with tidbits of history all throughout...another high recommendation. We also went to the Four Corners Monument (the only place where four states meet, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah) and the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, New Mexico... a bit out of the way but worth it😃

I've stayed in a lot of old mom and pop motels. Always asked to see a room before agreeing to stay there. You can tell pretty quick just by taking a look in the room if it's clean and well kept or if it's going to have bugs. Luckily I've never ended up in a place with bedbugs but my brother and his wife stayed in a really expensive hotel and ended up with bedbug bits all over them the next morning. As others have said mom and pop motels in rural areas are probably safe and relatively clean(no hotel is really clean). Dingy looking motels in big cities are probably the ones you’ve heard about that are gross and not safe as they usually have a lot of drugs and ladies of the night. You could probably just research with ratings and comments online. Maybe even call up some places and ask if it’s safe spot for children. And corn dogs are really good.

I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve always wanted to do the cross country road trip but from here in Virginia it takes about a day just to get near it! I’m almost 50 but I’m still making that trip one day

I spent many hours on Route 66, driving from Chicago to St. Louis. Stopping to visit family in Bloomington and Springfield. Now you would take the Interstate (55), but back then the interstate wasn’t completed. I could go on about the cool things to see, just in Illinois, but one of my favorite things on Route 66 is the musical highway outside of Albuquerque New Mexico. If you drive over it at the right speed, in just the right place, your tires play a song. So much fun!

When it comes to the corn dogs, I've never had one at a restaurant or fair, so I can't really give my opinion about those; my favorite corn dogs are the frozen honey crunchy Foster Farms brand ones.

Rt 66 will take you 3-4 days minimum to traverse the entire road. You may want to pick and chose which part you see. And it is mainly for Americans, so foreigners may not enjoy it as much. Maybe a foreigner who has tried it can chime in if they enjoyed it or how well they enjoyed it. 12:00 Keep in mind 1139 mile is the midpoint. So, we're talking 2278 miles or 40+ hours just in driving. If you stop at 20 places for 2 hours each, that's another 40 hours. Over 3 days unless you want to sleep then it will be even longer road trip to travel the entire distance. 12:30 Motels are fine but you do have to be choosy. The only bad thing is bugs. You want to be sure to get a bug free place. There are now several bed bug websites to search through for hotels and motels to check them out before booking a night. BUT Rt 66 may be the exception to the rule. I haven't been on 66 but I'd imagine the motels are going to be kept better than other more busy places along Interstate highways.

You could literally spend a year or more and still "miss" something. I would suggest finding all the fun stuff, good eats, and nature scenes within a 500 mile radius and concentrate on that for 1 trip. Or perhaps a few places in 1 location then drive a day and enjoy a few other spots (really depends on how long you can stay).

Just my opinion but AZ has the best portion of 66. Was there September 23. Twin arrows is just one arrow now. You can also fit in side trips to the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, and Monument Valley. If just visiting Arizona you can check out Tombstone AZ an old west town. There is a movie Tombstone that tells a small portion of its history

There were tons of tourist traps along Route 66 to lure tourist families into stopping and spending their money. The relatively few that survive along the old route have become kitschy memories of a bygone era.

Motels are typically not bad and are often cheaper than hotels. You just have to research the area you wan5 to stay in to weed out the seedier side of things.

Sadest thing about ol route 66. It's not complete anymore. Just a bunch of small tracks of it. The longest stretch of it left only about 15 miles.

I work as a docent at our local small town historic museum. We have a display of various old barbed wire styles. The town used to be rural but it’s being gobbled up by urban sprawl from Chicago. It’s actually pretty cool.

Americana in 1950. Then the Interstate freeways bypassed most stops. Any place you can find a genuine diner ... the food is classic. Jerry's Restaurant just off of I-40 in Weatherford OK. Some motels are flea traps ... find a recommendation.

If you stay at a major chain, ex. Hilton. You get a great room for around $100 a night. Any lower price chances you won’t like it.

Don’t stay on Route 66 in Albuquerque, or anywhere by Interstate 40 through the city, that’s where there can be some danger especially at night. See if you can find an Air B&B north of there maybe near the river or mountains. But LOTS of good food!!
