This is the Houston Rodeo and it runs for 2 weeks. The primary function is for FFA (Future Farmers of America) to show off and sell their stock and other items to go toward their college tuition. The actual rodeo is at night and is followed by concerts by famous artists (which can go until 2 in the morning, so it is kind of all night). I think you saw the NZ Family at the State Fair. Most of what this shows is Houston's version of that.

As a Houstonian, I hate to break any hearts, but our rodeo is but once a year. This year it runs from Feb 27 to March 17 and is always around this time of year. You can come and stay the whole day as it runs from 7am in the morning until 10: 15 every day. It is tons of fun, the food is great, and there are some stellar musical acts from rap, to country, to pop, to Tejano if you can score tickets early enough as many tend to sell out soon after the acts are announced.

Before the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, there are at least half a dozen trailrides that come from all over Texas. These are composed of thousands of riders, wagons, and horses who ride for an average of 1 week to get to the Rodeo. It's quite a spectacular sight. When I was a kid, my family lived in Cypress, Texas, and I remember one of the trail rides going down my road. The trail ride took the entire day and into the night.... that's how long it was. I don't know where they stopped to camp that night. Also, the HLSR isn't just about the show and rodeo. They also have art shows. High school kids all over Texas can be entered into the art show when I was in HS, I had several pieces of art that my teacher entered for me. I won several awards for ceramics. My name was in the Houston newspaper. And ... it's crazy, but my father worked as a foreman in a large print shop in Houston. He was chosen to do a print job for an artist to make prints of the artists western themed paintings. Those prints were then for sale at the HLSR AND in art and home decor shops all over Texas!!! When the artist would come into the print shop to preapprove the samples, the guy would want some little adjustment to it. So, my father would make the adjustments.... Then, set those samples back!!! He brought them home. So my family has those prints decorating our homes that my Daddy printed!!!

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo lasts about 2-weeks, all days. This year is the 90th anniversary of the rodeo, considered to be the largest rodeo in the world.

Ranchers and the rodeo community are an entirely different breed of people in the best way possible!

I believe the Texas state fair is a month long fair next door to the Cotton Bowl football stadium in Dallas ,Texas, in early fall.

I love hearing you talk about cattle. And I won't bother to correct you. Even ranchers sometime call them collectively 'Cows'. LOL!! Typically a fairground will close between 10 & 12pm. Not all night. Rodeos do happen in Europe. I'm not sure of all the things going on around them.

I share your aversion to sharing bites of food with others. I don't know how familiar you are with these two, but they are Josh and Ollie and have a KZfaq channel called Jolly. They have known each other since their college days. They consider each other to be family. Josh is actually the godfather of Ollie's kids. They probably look at sharing bites of food like you would with your family. Rodeos are big business in many western States and some of the best, if not exactly healthy, foods can be found there. The competitions in the ring are all based on what old time cowboys did on the range. Roping calves, breaking horses, and steer wrestling. The only thing not part of their jobs would have been bull riding. It's generally agreed that two cowboys, probably drunk, looked at a bull and said "I bet I can ride him longer than you.".

I grew up going to our local county Fair. We had Livestock shows, Tractor pulls, and Demolition Derby's. I even entered different thing in the Fair and won a few ribbons. It's all community driven, so farmers can show off their cattle, or local business can get some exposure. I grew up in an area that outside of Chicago, with Farms that grew crops, like corn. Our rodeos focused more on Horses, Farming, and hunting.

You need a proper Stetson cowboy hat Jono. Get it fitted personally to you. So when you come to America make sure you go to a proper Western hat store. They will fit a hat that fits you the right way. You really won't see anyone in Texas wearing a heavy felt hat. Unless it's winter or a dress hat. The professional rodeo riding on bulls is usually an evening event. They mostly saw the children's rodeo events. Calf roaping is something that the ranchers do to capture the calves and brand, medicate, etc. It doesn't hurt the calves. Cause a hurt damaged calf isn't worth any money. They 4 and 5 year olds mutton busting usually cry because they couldn't hang on long enough to win. Not cause they got hurt. Most rodeo's are because it's also a State Fair. And can last all week with lots of events from live music to Pro Rodeo. Horse shows, livestock showing and prizes. And also you're going to see food usually sold only at Fairs. It's usually fried everything 🤣. Take the one food you'd think should never be fried and you'll probably find it there. Great video today. Blessings from the Great State of Texas 🇺🇸

This particular rodeo is the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, which is the largest in the world. The Calgary Stampede in Canada is close in size. The Fort Worth Rodeo in north Texas is also very large. The State Fair of Texas is in Dallas and is a whole separate thing with all the carnival stuff, but without the rodeo events. As others have said, there are smaller rodeos of varying sizes with less in the way of music/food/carnival across the nation (especially the west) throughout the year as well as professional rodeo circuits for events like bull riding, calf roping, barrel racing, etc.

alligator is legitimately very tasty when fried. i wouldn't say it's super common, but it is served year round in the south. not just at festivals or as an oddity. it's just good.

Graham Family, a corndog is literally just a hotdog on a stick, dipped in cornmeal, and then deep fried. Now you can use cheese-filled hotdogs if you like, but a good thick all beef hotdog is best. Yes, that's right. Most hotdogs in America are made with beef, not pork. There are some pork hotdogs, but I believe most hotdog makers switched to beef quite a while ago.

this is like any other sport, was cut molded to make it most profitable. You still have small town ranch rodeos, roping arenas. What is growing (which has always been around) is cutting horse show and skidding (can be added to the ranch rodeo). Then you have mexico, which has its own unique rodeo and has its own thing going on.

We live in Louisiana and have gone to the Houston Rodeo, it’s two weeks with the livestock show also. I had to work but the family went and my grandson took first in the mutton busting. He won $200.00 dollars and eat himself sick from too much candy and junk food. My wife took pictures of everything and some videos. He was climbing light poles as he was in sugar overload, but eventually crashed and was fast asleep in no time. The adrenaline of winning and all the sugary sweets, cokes, corn dogs had him in a whirlwind of highs and lows. I think the word bonkers was used a few times. I’m the type that would have thrown in a few Red Bulls to keep is going so maybe it was better i missed it. Thanks for sharing.

Starting in October turkeys become a common sight each year. Look up turkeys crossing the road and you will see how common they are.

Texas is so big and diverse. All types of folks and cultures from Tex=Mex to German in towns like Fredericksburg, TX where you have can get schnitzel at a beer garden. There are some KZfaqs about the Germans in Texas.

Just so yall know. There are RODEOs in almost all of the Lower 48 states. There are indoor and outdoor RODEOs. There are at least three Rodeo circuits that I have been too. When you come to the states you can just do a search for the closest RODEO to where you are. I would absolutely love to see a Slovakian Rodeo! I'd love to see what's similar and what is culturally different. If there are different breeds of animals, or different types of tools and techniques. That's an amazing idea Kat! Also, the food! Also, keep in mind when it comes to food, when you go to the rodeo or the state fair, we have a whole classification of "fair food " or "fair ground food" in America, a lot of which depends on the region of the nation but one thing that is almost always there is the eye catching odd ball foods. While I agree I'd rather eat something like brisket or barbeque than pizza on a stick or fried Oreos, it's best to focus on trying brisket and Texas barbeque one day, and fair ground food another day, as they are completely different styles of food. That's not to say don't try the brisket at the fair ground, but a lot of the foods and recipes used by the businesses at fairs or rodeos or similar events are made for that type of venue. Why put pizza on a stick? So you can tote it around while you walk around the fair. You're not likely to find something like cricket pizza or scorpion pizza at most restaurants, so it's worth trying the odd things that catch your eye while walking around the fair or the rodeo. If you're going out to eat proper brisket and barbeque with the full experience, it's best to focus on that type of food. In my family, whenever we are doing something or going somewhere where we know we're gonna be eating a lot or trying a lot of new foods, we tend to skip breakfast so we are extra hungry for the good stuff, lol. Plus, you can take any leftovers to go, and you got dinner to snack on whenever you start to get hungry that evening.

There is another video of the Jolly guys trying more food at the TX Rodeo and Fair. If you want to see more rodeo videos though just look up the PBR (Professional Bull Riding). They cover more than just bull Riding. They do horses as well. You might have to look up either the FFA or 4H to look up the little kids stuff like the mutton busting. Now if you want to see a couple of other things that are funny that most folks don't know about are Try to catch the greased pig or Benson, NC Mule Days and see if someone has Donkey Basketball.

Belgian Malinois. Smartest dogs on the planet. Used a lot here in police work. I had a Belgian Tervuren, the long haired type. The Malinois are really, really intense dogs. They need a job or they'll eat your house. They never even went into the rodeo. That was the fair portion of it. The rodeo likely started at night.

Calf roping doesn't hurt the calf. It is a skill developed so that calves can be cut out of the herd and branded.

Jono, I just ran into one of your videos from a year ago--the one where the Jolly guys were sampling barbecue with the guy in overalls/boiler suit. Someone mentioned that his dogs were barking after they came back inside, and you were confused. A year later, here's an explanation. It means that your feet are really worn out, and you need a rest. I've had fried alligator, but not rattlesnake. However, I'd like to try it. I'm assuming that you've seen this sort of video before--at a state fair or rodeo, where it seems that the goal is to come up with the absolute weirdest food combinations possible, such as pizza on a stick--anything, as long as it has at least 2000 calories in it.

One rodeo arena event that is only done by women is "The Barrell Race" where women on horses ride their horses fast around 3 barrels and try to go around them and back in the fastest time.

The Rodeo Championships are in Las Vegas in December. There are probably videos of that.

My cousin puked on swings exactly like those. I didn't notice until it stopped and he had throw up all over him and it was spread around the base. I don't think anyone else got any on them thankfully.

It's entertaining and strange to me that so many around the world have never actually been to/or seen a live rodeo. Of course, bull riding is my #1 and I love just walking around looking at the livestock, the food is like that of a county fair, lots of great stuff (Funnel Cake). But it just never occurred to me that, as popular as western movies were back in the 50s through the 70's and into the 80's, that more people having been. I just assumed Cowboys were everywhere and it was a way of life shared. Then when I went to Japan, I saw a man wearing a cowboy hat out on the street (a local) and it really did look out of place as that was the first Japanese (or Asian) cowboy I ever saw in Publick (Jakie Chan plays one in a movie, I think). I bet Japanese girls would make cute cowgirls though (sorry - getting off track) ;P

The pizza on a stick is like a very large hot pocket or a doughy calzone. Didn’t mind hot pockets when they first came out because they were less messy and quicker to cook than a pizza. Over time and them experimenting with their cost effective dough; it started to remind me too much of pop-tarts pastry. Pizza Hut made a great Calzone called a Pizone, until they changed their ‘secret dough recipe’ also for cost effective reasons and I’m left disappointed every time. That happens to a lot of our favorite foods, over time they get more processed and more artificial tasting. Unfortunately, we can’t force them to uphold quality, because we settle for it and eat it anyway. I remember the distinctive difference in Burger King’s fries when they started cooking them in unsaturated fat oil (always sounded like an oxymoron) because they bent to the ‘healthy eating’ lobbyists. We sacrifice taste for convenience a lot, so when the quality is there (like it used to be), we notice. When it isn’t, we say - sure do miss the good old days. 😂

Yes, regarding all the events at a rodeo, they are pretty unique to America and its Old West "cowboy" culture, and I think that's why, or at least one of the reasons, that American culture is what it is. You know you get some folks that say America doesn't have any culture. Yeah? I beg to differ. I would say that the entire 1800s and even a bit of the 1700s are what gave America its most unique culture in first the colonial culture which is still seen today in the Atlantic Coast region where some of the original settlements were. Charlestown, South Carolina is an excellent place to visit for some of that from a southern perspective. Boston and its surrounding suburbs is another for a northern perspective. Williamsburg, Virginia, just south of DC is another cool site that maintains an entire historical colonial-esque portion of town there with period-dressed "actors." Plus you got a lot of Civil War history scattered throughout the Eastern half of the US, from battlefields, forts and museums. And then of course the whole Westward expansion story in the 1800s which includes the "cowboy" life, the Wild Old West with Outlaws and their Gangs plus prominent and famous lawmen that pursued these outlaw gangs. Not to mention the whole Gold Rush period that spawned countless gold mining towns all over the mountainous West. So yeah, it's actually a really rich history and culture that no other country in the world has. The only difference is that it's been fairly recent. I mean, some of the figures from the Old West lived into the 1930s and 40s...so it's only been about 80, 90, 100 years since those old fellers died off.
