I’m afraid that I don’t understand the fixation some people have on a Rolex. There are better watches out there. I think the accuracy of a watch is the most important thing for a watch. I’ve known several people who have craved a Rolex for years. When it came time to pull the trigger on one they try one out and are generally underwhelmed. Can anyone explain their obsession with a Rolex?

I thought about any wear and tear on the beautiful polished case of Grand Seikos. This might be a plus in that such wear is related to the Japanese art of Kintsugi. That is the time-honored way of repairing broken pottery items with gold or platinum seams to make the pot better than when it was new but with a different esthetic. There are similar ideals as to how that philosophy is relevant to other types of artifacts. It's fascinating but only marginally relevant to zaratsu polishing. I love Japanese culture so that is probably why I'm rambling on about this.

Nice to hear you gave the Grand Seiko a fair shot, Marc. It tried the SBGA229 on, and it was a great watch, but it was just too big for my wrist. A Submariner or Seamaster Professional are better choices for me, though a Tudor Black Bay 58 nails it for me. If the BB58 wears like the OP39 I tried on, then I think we have a winner.

It's funny Marc. If you are a little older and own a vintage muscle car worth $100,000 then you are well respected, cool, and have respect from guys in your age group. If you enjoy watches and have a $100,000 collection you have to be careful. Most guys will think you're an idiot. I happen to keep my cars cheap and my watches fairly expensive. Just the way I work. So glad the car bug never bit me.

Thank you for being honest about your bias toward Rolex.. liked your "Jetsons" reference "luxury Roch" ... You certainly have Rolex on the mind. :-) I selected the GS because I wanted something that actually keeps time (it is a watch after all) , was not part of the herd, a bit unique, low production and buying pre-owned got a great deal... Fitted with the black rubber strap... It's ideal. Thanks bud!

No problem with the Grand Seiko, but as a watch lover and especially a diver lover, Marc, you have to try thr Fifty Fathoms. I thought that 42mm of Speedy is my absolute maximum until I tried on a Blancpain. That watch also hugs the wrist and feels as good as a 40mm sub being 45mm case size. And super dial.

For me, the power reserve is useful when you look down at your watch and are surprised by the time. Then you think that you either lost track of the time or the watch is out of gas. So you look at the power reserve.

Hi Marc, well done on a pretty balanced review. Aesthetics and Sprindrive vs. automatic are subjective matters, so not much to add on that front. Value retention, or lack thereof, for GS is easily remedied by buying it second hand. The one area I disagree with you is overall execution and finishing, where I definitely give the nod to GS over Rolex, with a caveat on the clasp. As functional as the GS clasp is, I do agree that it is too thick, and not as well presented as a Rolex Sub / SD.

The primary purpose of a watch is to tell the time, as accurately as possible. Grand Seiko beats Rolex into the ground on that basis alone. Then you have the whole hand assembled, human interaction when assembling the watch which just doesn’t happen with a Rolex (or Tudor). Grand Seiko is for people who are capable of recognising supreme craftsmanship and value for money over marketing prowess. And you can walk into a boutique and actually buy a Grand Seiko. Try doing that at a Rolex AD.

Mark, God bless your soul. As you you said in your comments, it’s all about your opinion. The question is, why would anyone listen to your opinion unless they had to justify over paying soooooooo much for a Rolex? The Seiko in question does everything better than a Rolex accept make a dog trainer feel he is equal to his employers. Only a Rolex can do that for Mark and the rest of you fan boys. News flash fan boys, It Doesn’t matter what you wear on your wrist........you will never be in the club! The only thing I can gain from this channel is Rolex vs Rolex comments. I just do not understand the constant fiddling and tickering with a collection. If I'm just a normal dude, why have a rotating cast of a dozen watches? Constantly mulling thru BST. How can you not just settle in to a groove with a handful of watches? What does the rest of your EDC look like? Must be a mess. How many wallets and cars and pocket knives and flashlights do you orbit thru? Must be exhausting.

You do know a bulova precisionist works almost the exact same way yet it's a more accurate watch for about $200-$300 right? Lol. And it's also Japanese. Buying a bulova precisionist in my opinion is smarter and a lot more financially savvy. Trust me i compared the two, newer model Grand Seiko snow flake in one hand and a beautiful high end Bulova precisionist with sapphire crystal in the other hand. Trust me when i tell you, the grand Seiko doesn't have $5,000 worth of quality more than the high end Bulova precisionist you will hardly notice the difference in quality. So save yourself the money
@marcgoldbergdogtrainer
@marcgoldbergdogtrainer 5 жыл бұрын
It’s not at all the same. That Bulova uses a battery and plastic spacers. It is some unique technology and quite accurate and good for its price point but it is not comparable unless you care more about accuracy for the dollar them craftsmanship. In which case then it is a player.
@jasongennero2925
@jasongennero2925 5 жыл бұрын
@@marcgoldbergdogtrainer I'm telling you there is a high end Bulova precisionist line where the watches go for around a grand grey market price. You can't tell the difference in quality from the grand Seiko snowflake held them both in each hand and compared them in person brother, lol, you can say what ever you like but i believe my eyes before someone else's words. If also be mad if i paid about eight Grand when i only has to pay one Grand that would burn my ass too trust me. That's why you always gotta do your research before you buy. Which is sounds like you do but it's hard to find research on the precisionist movement and the spring drive movement. The Bulova precisionist movement ticks and it ticks at 16 beats or vibrations a second and it's more accurate. The spring drive doesn't tick, like you said it had a breaking system so it doesn't technically have any beats per second. That's one way it's better than the precision movement but to the naked eye you can't tell anyway just like to the naked eye and feel you can't tell the difference between a high end Bulova precisionist and that grand Seiko snowflake

@Mark Michael Yeah, but it isn't. In simple terms Kinetic is a quartz watch with a capacitor that gets charged by the rotor and the drive train is run by a stepper motor like a traditional quartz - nothing special IMO. A Spring Drive on the other hand is something completely different. No capacitor/battery, no stepper motor. The only energy storage is a mechanical mainspring like a traditional mechanical watch for the drivetrain and for the power generation for the regulation. Not without reason did the development took more than 20 years and hundreds of patents and the Swiss are still not able to produce a competing product that is capable. If you don't know how a Spring Drive works, don't make such bold claims. Educate yourself.

I made it through maybe five minutes. Nothing really new here or controversial. If you are concerned primarily about value retention- buy a Rolex. There you go. One sentence. Cut to black. Other than this- please skip the blather and get on to technical details. BTW, on that front, suggesting that the casework or movement in a standard Rolex can compete with a GS Spring drive is objectively ignorant. Whether it's "your cup of tea" is so obviously subjective that it's not worth discussing.

Plus, 10 grand for a Sub? You have got to be kidding me. 10 grand for a machine made, average movement, steel watch that depends on propaganda to convince people their product is better. Swiss watch companies should be proud of the Jedi Mind Tricks they played on everyone, they definitely convinced the public that their machine made watch is better. A soul? Are you kidding me? So a machine/robot made watch has a soul? I don't think so. It takes a human artisan working with their hands to give an inanimate object a soul, and the GS is made by hand. If anything, GS is the watch with the soul. Rolex is for people that seem to think that European tech is somehow better just because it's European. I find that hilarious, I'm not a European fan of anything, especially cars and watches.
