I find that most haters of Grand Seiko are major Rolex defenders, not regular Rolex fans but die-hard Rolex people. It's hard for them to recognize that a "common" brand like Seiko can produce something Grand enough to not only compete on the same level but in many ways can actually improve upon their favorite band.......and at a fraction of the price.

Well at times at a lesser price, certainly not a fraction of the price. The most expensive Grand Seiko sells for US $72K, a black Submariner is actually a fraction of that price.

Congratulations on your new acquisition Marc. Personally for a diver I’d go Hi-Beat as they do some great models. For a dress watch I’d go Spring Drive as GS makes some great dials.

Marc I agree with you on the chunk of real estate on the dial but it’s an outstanding looking watch and looks great on the wrist. I own a Blumo and a Padi Turtle and the one great thing about Seiko is even the larger watches fit comfortably because of the curvature of the case . Congratulations on this GS beauty 😀👍🏻

@@joeyben2733 Rolex also cannot come close to the accuracy of the purely mechanical GS Hi-Beat models as well. Omega can, but not Rolex. What both brands cannot come close to is the finishing of the dial and the case of a Grand Seiko. In all these cases Rolex is the Hyundai or Mitsubishi, while GS is the Maybach.

This is a great watch and stands on its own merits all day. I wish many comments would stop trying to compare it to a Rolex. It's not a Rolex, it's not even close. I love Rolex, I own several Subs and a Deepsea D-Blue, but I would buy one of these no problem, and may well do so in the near future

I personally love it but each to their own as they say I suppose. At least the GS he's chosen has plenty of wrist presence though, he puts great store in that, its huge!

I have the SBGA029.....accuracy is +5 seconds/month. The watch oozes precision quality, is a very capable Diver, and is a beautiful watch.

Marc, I have the GS limited edition GMT with the brown dial and I’m very pleased with it. I have a Milgause, Exp II and a vintage GMT two tone root beer. I think the GS stacks up well at the price point. I’m interested in the diver but was wondering how it compares to the your new SMP300 which I’m also looking at?

A fair summary of both pieces. Pluses and minuses on both sides. At least the GS will retain some value at least in the short term. Years from now? Only time will tell ;)

I love the spring drive in the GS. It is more accurate than any Swiss watch as of now. I am not saying it is a better watch, just more accurate in timekeeping and the second hand is mesmerizing. I hope you did not pay more than 5K for it. You can usually get a discount. The Diver has micro adjustments and the snowflake ones do not. The diver also comes in Titanium making it much more lightweight. I have only seen the GS models in a showcase. I never felt one. So you will need to tell us what you think of the quality, I hope you enjoy it.

@guess what I agree with you. I hate pins and collars to adjust the bracelet. As I stated GS is not a better watch, just more accurate. From what I read 11 seconds a year. I know that Citizen came out with a watch that is 1 second a year, but it's ugly and 6000 dollars US. Crazy. I think it is quartz too.

@@scottsj4625 I have a Citizen JP2000-08E that I synced with GMT 4 months ago. It is now 2 seconds fast (0.5 seconds per month fast). It is a quartz based, dive certified, tool watch which I’ve recently discovered is probably the sweet spot for me. My other Citizen certified dive, tool watch is an eco-drive, model BN2041-81L. Both have built-in depth gauges, displaying current depth, max. depth per dive, and both feature alarms for rapid ascent and both have ratcheting adjustable bracelets - a very nice feature. The eco-drive probably won’t require a new battery for many years, but it’s not nearly as accurate, running about 7.5 seconds fast per month. Anyone that likes dive watches should have a look at what Citizen has to offer in quartz, eco-drive and automatic dive watches. Their bracelets are pin and collar, which are a hassle on initial set-up, but the ones with ratcheting adjustable clasps more than make up for it.

Thanks for the video Marc. Love the brand (though I am a Rolex nerd like you) but I prefer GS dress watches more. I tried this watch but it gives me the same feeling as all the giant Omega dive watches (... on my tiny 16.5 cm wrist). Let's see how long you can enjoy the smooth sweep of the spring drive...

Marc con grads with the watch wear Gs on left wrist and role on right wrist and compare movements and second hands and you will see that Sd Gs makes up for the complete watch negatives keep it in your collection with seamaster 300.

It is a completely mechanical movement. No batteries, even though the quartz regulates the time, no batteries power it, thus completely mechanical.

I grew up with Seiko and G-Shocks. I do own two Seiko's , but I want a ROLEX, But they are very costly in maintenance. So I've heard. Could an average Joe keep up with the costs. Please let me know. Great video's.

Mark, it doesn't sound like you will be living with that GS too long... Unless you fall in love the accuracy your Sub is a nicer watch. You should have purchased on with a different color dial. You can find them with blue, purple and green dials.

Subtract the black Sub and add the Deepsea James Cameron...and then you are correct when it comes to the Rolex dive watch part of my collection. ;) Seriously, good point...we are sick. BTW, I ordered several new watches today... 1) the new white gold Pepsi with the blue dial on Oyster. The perfect GMT. (126719BLRO). It is 4x the price of my Pepsi jubilee, but well worth it IMHO. 2) A Datejust 41, blue dial with roman numerals, jubilee, fluted. Absolutely gorgeous...and it's my first DJ (like you said, every serious collector should have a Datejust in their collection) and 3) the Omega Planet Ocean GMT. This is two watches in one..dive and GMT. It's called the "Oreo" because of the bezel. I wasn't so sure about it at first but it has really grown on me. I think it will get a lot of wrist time. Finally, my Batgirl and my blue Sky-Dweller should arrive very soon...but I already asked for those. Incoming!

I know you love Rolex (almost to the point that I find your reviews unwatchable) but honestly anyone who has both watches and can judge with their head as well as their heart, would agree that the GS Diver is on a par with the Rolex and has the benefit of being able to buy one at an AD. Also nobody is getting mugged for their GS diver either - GS is a far better ownership proposition - I want a watch to wear not a Safe Queen!

My Seiko 5 "Sea Urchin" came with stickers that didn't leave marks. The box was about the same quality. I like the look of it better too. Have a nice day.

Obviously a growing fan base for gs over the years and clearly they make decent watches . Nonetheless I’ve noticed with the you tube watch community there tends to be a huge follower culture and not much originality . Often a brand gets lorded and everyone follows suit . I’m not an infinity or Lexus guy so doubt I would throw my money the way of GS . Can’t help thinking they lack soul .

It's a Grand Seiko watch not a Seiko watch, it's actually its own brand of luxury handcrafted timepieces, even Rolexes are not fully handcrafted. The most expensive Grand Seiko retails for $72k

Correspondence Foryou Correct, however most people on the street have never heard of Grand Seiko, they just know the Seiko brand, that is/was my point. So you could wear a 72k GS and most people who don’t know watches would think it was worth 72 bucks.

Gee most people I see wearing "Rolex" watches I think they are likely are wearing $50 fakes, however that shouldn't deter a person to wear a genuine Rolex or any brand watch for that matter.

Well the GS bezel sounds higher quality to me more hydraulic and complex and refined. The Rolex sounds standard, simple, mechanic but refined. That's my perspective

Better looking lugs than your Rolex you were wearing ... however, the overall size of the Rolex is more appealing. A 40-42 is big enough for me and 40-ish is even best. Good showing! One other thing, why is everyone so interested in the bezel click sound. I have several watches with movable bezels, all are tight, I don't dive so seldom move them, none are loose and all line up properly. I personally don't think the click sound has much to do with anything ... can you enlighten me on that?

For bezel action try Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. beats Rolex sub. Even Seadweller 116600 beats the sub 116610LN.

I have the e the Seiko SBDX 023 Seiko MM 300 the updated version and it rocks. You should really own one.You got to compare the MM 300 to the ROLEX not this Seiko. Bezel is so different on the MM

I get that you wanted to try GS in the flesh....but their divers are an acquired taste. I’d love to see you try the diver that real Seiko fans consider the grail. The MM300. In my opinion in terms of aesthetics and charm it shits all over GS divers. I prefer the SBDX017 to the later ceramic and sapphire offering, but try either and you’ll love it.

I have sold 8 GS. What makes it better than Rolex is the power reserve indicator and the very well accuracy. Also the finish and craftsmanship. What makes Rolex better is the very easy service and for over 50 years you can get new parts for Rolex. GS garentys it for 30 years. Furthermore Rolex 904 Steel has a lille less corotion but you won´t notice before the watch is over 50 years old. Then on a microscope is shows a little corection. However Some are made of titanium and then you won´t have that "problem". So Rolex beats GS after 50 years IMO but before that, GS beats Rolex. However Rolex has a better resalevalue, but if you are not looking to sell, it does not matter.

Something does not work with the dial. The round indices are too small and there is too much empty space.

I heard through the grapevine that if they were to use larger lume plots on the GS divers, there is a risk of getting blinded by the green glow when you walk indoors 😳👍😅 Seriously though, for my tastes I agree. But I think Marc might find a place for it, he likes bigger watches!

Well I don't think so, it's got a classic Seiko dive feel to it. There are so many Submariner homages around which for me makes the sub look a common (have you seen the Invicta?) , I really don't think this is one at all.
