Can I fix the leak on my Shed Roof? Part 3. I think we have established the nails are a 'red herring'. The felt must be leaking further up and water is running down under the felt until it reaches the nails. However there are still two more videos to come in this series. The leak is intermittent and appears to have been fixed and then it starts again.

This whole series was started because the company that made the shed for me were too busy to come and re-felt it for me when I rang them. The best date they could give me was going to be months away, so I said I would try a temporary fix. That gave me a chance to try the spray sealant from Poundland. However it looks like the sheet of felt nearest the front of the shed must have a leak in it (not the nails). This could be from me walking on it over the years to trim the trees and retrieve model aeroplanes, although I always use crawling boards to spread the weight. The felt is supposed to be top quality, and it has been well overlapped, however it is only about 4 years old, so I suspect it is more likely to be damage rather than "fair wear and tear"

As Jay Herde said, the nails are so close to the edge of the boards, that they have split the wood and there is no grab. So the nails are basically doing nothing. The wind goes into the building and lifts the felt, thus lifting these nails. If you still get bother, you could put new black mastic on them again and put a wide (2" or more) strip of wood the length of the seam. Make sure the fixings are not in line with the nails, as that is the seam. My neighbour has these strips of wood on top of the felt and it has seen her through storms that took down my fence. It basically helps the felt to stay flat. These strips of wood don't have to be on the seams either. Felt relaxes and tightens over the course of the year and will often produce a weak spot. You are right about leaks usually being further up, but I also think these nails moving about are the problem.

Solution: 1. Wait for summer 2.Re-felt it. Use the thicker, fabric reinforced stuff or the top layer of Torch-On. Worth the extra. Overlap the layers like your roof tiles. Use the right length felt nails. No more leaks.

@@GrandadIsAnOldMan Yes, I know mate. That is where I am lucky having my Son Christopher to help me. He is a keep fit guy and well able to help. I wish I could give you a hand, and you know I would if I lived near you Graham. If my Son wasn't here I would be in the same boat as you. All the people who were my pals have moved away and I really don't know anyone anymore. Suppose this happens as we get older. North Lanarkshire, my area, has just gone into full lockdown, so my Daughter will have to close her hairdressing shop on Friday at 6pm, for 3 weeks. Seems strange but she will benefit from the money they are giving her because she has no one else working for her. Strange but true. Anyway, take care Graham and I hope you manage with the re-felting. 👍👍👍

At 4:47, those nails are between the roof boards, or right on the edge of the boards? Those are probably the nails that had cracks up top. If you put weight on one board and not the other, the nail is gonna 'lean'. Pull them out and move them up an inch or two (I know ... Umerucan). Then seal the old holes Oh, put some seal under the cap on the moved nails. They say, the leak is usually higher up ourside than the drip inside. That doesn't count for between the boards.

In the UK using felt on the roof must be common, but not here in the USA. I would look for a longer lasting roof covering.
