I used to take an image I wanted to trace and rub a pencil on the back where I estimated I would be tracing. Then I would turn it over and trace the image. it worker pretty well. Graphite transfer paper would be a lot easier! Thanks for the tip!

This is how I do it, too. I like to mark out values in my graphite sketch, too. Usually I'll indicate that with cross-hatches and other marks.

Do the smudges erase easily on a canvas

Sufy Gamer with a Pink Pearl eraser they do come off pretty easily, yes

how come you have so little smudging when you are done?

you have to use the brand that I use, Loell Cornell the less expensive ones smudge. That's on my Amazon list: www.amazon.com/shop/paper-paintings-collage-artwork

@@ElizabethStHilaire i use saral which is a standard wax free graphite paper that is very popular. seems like it should be fine but i cant transfer anything without big smudges.
