The Grayl Ultralight Compact Purifier is a very portable, simple and clever purifier that I have been using since I got it on a tradeshow two years ago. And I have become very fond of it. And not only me: my family too. And what comes in handy: my dearest is a Civil Engineer with the specialization in water purification so she was curious about this purifier too. Now, what is the big deal about this purifier?
Well, quite simple: Grayl claims that the Utralight Compact Purifier removes 99.9999% of viruses like Hepatitis A, SARS and the Rotavirus, a 99.9999% removal of bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella and
Cholera and a 99.999% (don’t ask me where the 0.0009 difference comes from) removal of protozoan cysts like Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Next to that it filters sediment, chemicals, microplastics and heavy metals out of the water. And it makes water simply taste better.

I have a heavier one than yours, I love it. I use it on nearly every hike I do and I have to say it makes the water taste really good! We have good water here in Scotland from the tap, but water from a burn or something tastes much nicer through the grayl... pure tasting with no chlorine. 👍

I am getting sold on the Grayl for redundancy in my water storage preparation. To be safe, I believe that water filtration and purification are 2 steps that should go hand in hand unless you are completely confident in your water quality. As far as purification goes, I'd rather have a method and not need it than need it and not have it. I live in a city of 50,000 on the upper Mississippi so my tap water is purified, but I am about a block away from a small river that parallels the Mississippi. If I have a good way to purify my water as well as filter it along with a back-up method such as the Grayl I would be confident in using that water if the need ever came to that.

I have a 4 litre GravityWorks Platypus. It filters fine but doesnt taste all that great. Lake water still tastes like lake water. I just ordered this and will pre-filter my drinking water in my platy before running it through the Grayl. For cooking ill still use the Platy so I can prolong the life of my grayl.

Hi Brandyn, Good or 'bad' taste is the result of having or missing a active carbon part in the filter. The Grayl does have it so water should taste fine. Enjoy! Cheers, Gijs

Thanks for the review. How has the filter been holding up after 2 years? Was it still useable at the end of life until you could find a new filter? Would be nice if you included other conversation /measurements in your descriptions side by side 👍

hello. I am really Glad that you mentioned cross contamination!! When use the cup to scoop the water out form the contaminated water source, excess contaminated water is on the outside of the cup and when you lift the filter up to drink water, droplets on the outside may drip down into your mouth? this does pose an issue??
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Hi M Den, Yes, that is what I am talking about. Make sure that the cup is dry after pressing the filter before drinken. In that case drops might go to the spot where your lips are. Good thing: I never got sick using the Grayl. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

Good video! One question, how do you know if the filter is reaching the end of it's life? Have you had to replace yours yet? Also, does the filtration speed slow down as the filter gets older? Thanks!
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rod, I a pretty sure it is in the video but rewatching my own videos 😊... no... It is in the article on my website and this is what I wrote on it: Filters end of life According to Grayl the filter has a lifespan of about 300 filter cycles and that is around 150 liters of water. But this is only a benchmark since the filter life is very much depending on the water that you are purifying. With very dirty water with a lot of sediment for example the filter will have a shorter life and if you are cleaning very crisp water from a mountain stream it will have a prolonged life. With a fresh new filter, the Grayl takes about 15 seconds to press the water through the filter. When the filter is used more frequent and gets dirty the filtration time will be longer. As soon as I hit the 25 second barrier Grayl advices to replace the filter. I should also change the filter if I have used it for three years but not hit the 150 liter or 25 seconds mark yet. Does this answer your question? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews ah, so you just go by how long it takes to filter the water. Thank you! That's what I was wondering. If it was in the video I must have missed it, but it's good to see it in print in any case.

Nice review as usual. One small point - the pronunciation of ‘oz’ is ‘ounce’ (or in this case, ‘fluid ounce’). The odd abbreviation apparently comes from the medieval Italian word OnZa. Like many others however, I much prefer the metric system of measurement, over the imperial one. I know where I am with millilitres, litres, etc.
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Dear Del, I know about the pronounciation and I don't know why I used the Wizzard of Oz ;-). Maybe bcausce there where some people around that kept walking into the shot and I couldn't concentrate... I did not know about the background so the mistake is useful ;-) Thanks for the compliment! Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

How many times did you change the filter during the course of two years? I heard people complain that once the filter is dirty is pretty hard to push down. Did it happen to you???
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruno, We did it once out of security reasons because we forgot to register how many we did filter. I have three now😄. When it gets dirty is gets harder to push down and that is a warning to the user. When it takes about 25-28 seconds it is time to change. When one filters water with a lot of sediment it gets dirtier faster. Does this help? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Gijs

Helps a lot. Two more questions... Did it ever get stuck or unable to push or purified water? I know what would it be recommend, but... Could you use it without the filter to storage fresh water?

@@brunoeduardo6024 1- No ;-). 2- Yes but... 2a-You still need the inner bottle 2b-it happend to me a few times that when carrying the bottle on the 'handle' the inner bottle with cap slides out the outer bottle. It never happend in my backpack mesh bottle holder.

how do you Clean the filterafter Usage?
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 7 ай бұрын
In this case: you don't. It is a one way filter. Some filters can be scraped or back flushed but not in this case. It is good for about 150 liters and when pressing down gets hard, it's time to replace the filter. After usage I just let it dry and it is ready for the next trip. Does this help? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

Filters clean mountain stream water? What about pond water? With all due respect, that water, before purifying it, is likely cleaner and safer than the city water here in the USA
