You have to wonder how much Karl fakes his affliction. He’s actually a pretty standard guy if you think about it. He’s just a little disturbed by his childhood and then being locked away from society since then, as well as being hunched over with a speech impediment. Other wise he’s the most dependable antihero character in the movie.

John Ritter here trying to explain who he is to someone who doesn't judge anyone is so great. He goes on and on because Carl is listening, but ultimately he's having this conversation to ensure those he loves are not threatened. He wants to protect them, and is straightforward about it. But Carl's silence (and simple disinterest in what doesn't interest him) allows him to vent. It's a great quiet scene. I admire how Ritter's character Vaughn, however disarmed, comes around to his point: don't hurt my family. It perfectly echoes the scene later when Carl tells Vaughn to take care of the boy. So beautiful.
