We test the new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Exceed Tourer to see if it’s great value.
Subscribe: bit.ly/3fnfVTQ | Visit Chasing Cars: bit.ly/2DpFZQP
At long last there is an all-new Mitsubishi Outlander, and it’s quite a looker. The styling has been really dialled up, making this midszie seven-seat SUV look more premium from the outside, while the interior goes to great lengths to impress, with quilted leather and much better tech. But is the Outlander’s beauty only skin-deep?
In today’s episode of Chasing Cars, deputy editor Nathan Ponchard conducts an independent road test of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Exceed Tourer AWD 7 Seat ($50,990).
Under the bonnet of ALL new Outlander trims is the same Nissan-derived 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol four-cylinder engine making 135kW of power (181 hp). All grades use a CVT auto in Australia while there is a choice of FWD and AWD, plus five or seven seats.
The Outlander competes with other relatively compact seven-seaters like the Skoda Kodiaq, Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento.

Just purchased a 2023 FWD Outlander LS and it's performing extremely well. I love the spacious non cluttered dash that doesn't make me feel claustrophobic like so many SUV dashes & cabins do. Fuel economy is excellent, the computer says I'm averaging about 8.2 km/l and the ride is very pleasant for a family SUV. If you want performance, buy a performance vehicle. Very very happy with the Outlander, the only thing I regret is being impatient and not waiting for an AWD version to land.

I've got an AWD 5 seat ES and the ride with the 18" wheels is better, and the matching full size spare wheel is great to have if you drive out of the city. You mentioned some models have the extra pouches on the front seats, from what I can tell all models had them from initial production, mine does. However I'm not sure if they will remain with the 22.5 models. I've also noticed the engine frees up nicely as it gets more km on it, mind you mine has just under 1000km as I write this but it's noticably better than it was when I picked up up with 30km on it. That being said, it does feel pretty flat even revving to 6000rpm, although it replaced a diesel Mitsubishi Challenger so it's performance is noticably better in that regard. As for build quality, I've not seen any evidence of the infamous bonnet shimmy that everyone talks about, and mine travels on rough roads. I did however notice a bit of rubber trim inside the door was crinkled slightly.

The high sales figure for low grades due to lower levels ES and LS don't have full digital dash and UHD, thus these models are widely available compared to higer trims. Buyers order high trims today will have to wait 10 months. I ordered the Aspire model on 4th Nov 2021, delivery ETA June 2022.

The reason LS and ES are 80% of the sales is, the initial stock arrived was mostly.these ones. You could either get one of.these now or wait for an Aspire+ for 3-6 months. I picked up LS as I needed a car urgently. Otherwise, price difference between LS and Aspire is not that much and Aspire had many additional features including 12.3 inch driver display which is not the case anymore. But now power tailgate moved from LS to Aspire so it is part of the upgrade. I don't believe ES sold.that many. All but one outlanders I have seen on the streets were LS. I have only seen one ES and no others.

It sounds like better wheels and tyres with a good diesel engine and auto gearbox would turn this into a pretty awesome family wagon. There’s no need for it to be fast, but good power at low RPM would make for a much better drive day to day. As it is, I’d sooner buy an outback for similar money.

Beautiful interior and exterior. It seems Mitsubishi have done there homework. However, this car has a few flaws. Firstly, there is a lot of road noise due to the 20" inch alloy wheels. Secondly, there is a blind spot due to the back pillar while driving. So blind spot monitoring will be a must. Thirdly, although the interiors look premium its only matter of time, scratches will be visible even more significantly. Mitsubishi should have given a better engine to this car. Overall, a good car but with some cons.

It looks like a Lexus, high end Toyota now. Kudos to Mitsubishi for doing that. As an aside my family owned a Chrysler Voyager minivan back in the 80's when they were super popular. The engine in that vehicle, made by Mitsubishi. It was a real workhorse for us. Many long trips and years of virtually trouble free driving. The problem for Mitsu as I see it arises in how they differentiate themselves from the Highlanders, Pilots and Pathfinders of the world in a pretty competitive market.

Great review. I agree with everything that was said and I've got an Exceed with Light Grey interior on order. I'm coming from a Cerato GT so the firm ride doesn't bother me too much, but I agree it isn't as plush as some other rivals. For me, the one big negative is obviously the engine/performance. Despite it being a family car for us, I would have liked more punch but it ticked all other boxes so I didn't see it as a deal breaker. Probably rare you ever find a car that you love everything about it, so it's about being able to put up with the dislikes. I was really impressed overall by this new Outlander.

Great review just very disappointed with the engine & lack of a Phev option until later this year. Last year I bought a 2020 Outlander Phev that was a demo with 2600km that only cost $41990. This is by far the best car I've owned including a 2018 Prado GXL & 2020 Hybrid Camry that was too small & not a good family car unlike the Phev. You hardly ever need fuel & lately have been charging for free at local shopping centres & beach carparks which is a phenomenal feeling. I owned a 2014 Outlander Phev for 4 years & regretted selling it so now am stoked to have the newer model with slightly larger 2.4l engine & bigger 13.8kwh battery. Once the battery is dead I still have over 550km of range so is the best of both worlds & you can travel to regional areas without massive range anxiety. The instant EV torque is addictive, super quiet, quite fast & the regenerative paddles are unbelievable especially going down steep hills, approaching traffic lights or when someone locks up in-front of you. I have 20 solar panels on my roof & charge mostly in the arvo with a home charger I installed. We rarely get electricity bills - mostly get credits. My commute is 25km each way so usually get home with a few kms of EV range remaining. Once you drive a PHEV you realise just how good they are & don't want to go back to an ICE or hybrid car again.

the catch is the styling is polarising... it looks like a refugee from the year 2042 but puzzlingly it has the engine from 2010. ie. a direct injected Nissan 2.5 n/a - i really think 135kW and 235Nm in a 1,6 ton+ package really doesnt cut it. But if you can live with the styling and are ok with the power then go ahead. LOoks and power isnt for everyone obviously.

The fact that there is such a small take up of the model shows the people are not prepared to pay what Mitsubishi is asking. Looking at the front the headlights look too big and give it a startled look. Why manufacturers seem to think everyone want massive wheels with smaller sidewall tyres is beyond me. Hit a road hole and damage is almost guaranteed to the wheel rim. The other issue fo rme is that I have driven a Mitsubishi ASX as a loan car why my real one was getting serviced convinced me that their CVT is horrible.

Well for starters the bonnet was literally moving up and down like it was unlatched at any speed above 60kph (we got out and checked, it wasn’t), apparently this is normal but I can recall driving a car that’s done that below speeds that are illegal on Aussie roads. The centre console felt flimsy. The sheet metal felt thin (as did the previous generation). I’m sure there’s more but this was 3 months or so ago and could be just down to the particular car. Nissan CVT = What you drive when you have no will to live. 10.3 Seconds to 100kmh is woeful.

In desperate need of a full re-engineering makeover. As you say, aesthetically it’s pleasing enough, but the rest of the vehicle just screams mediocrity wherever you look. The price point offers no semblance of reasonable value.

The styling of the front fascia is overwrought. It looks like a B-movie sci-fi creature. Not at all attractive.
