I was eight in 1960. First time when I heard this song, tears came up to my eyes. I was a little thin Japanese boy. I couldn't understand the words but I surely felt very sad. I still listen to this song.

I have been young and now am old. This song and other reflective ballads bring floods of bittersweet memories, emotions, thoughts. How strange this life the great creator has endowed us with. For the fullest meaning of existence come to him, read his book the Bible and follow the instructions to bow before the son he sent. Life is meant to be lived toward him.

When I turned 5 or 6 The Brothers Four performed at my Dad's Elks Club. (1967 or '68) Dad went to school or grew up with Dick Foley. Mr. Foley and the Brothers Four sang me happy birthday! That I will never forget! Dad passed away too early & I don't remember whether they went to school or grew up together. We owned that first album from the beginning though & I loved it!!
@MarkPearsonMusic16 күн бұрын
A neat story and fine memory. If the performance you are referring to was at the Lake City Elks (in North Seattle) then it was the first performance I did as a member of the Brothers Four. A special memory for me as well.

@@MarkPearsonMusic Well now I need to thank you for jogging MY memory! Yes, it was the Lake City Elks! We lived in Brier, WA, but we spent tons of time in Kenmore, Lake City, etc. There MIGHT be a picture somewhere. If I find it I’ll be sure to send through the website! So happy you’re still performing!

Wo... wo... A time to be reaping A time to be sowing The green leaves of summer Are calling me home " Twas so good to be young then In the season of plenty When the catfish were jumping As high as the sky A time just for planting A time just for ploughing A time to be courting A girl of your own " Twas so good to be young then To be close to the earth And to stand by your wife At the moment of birth, wo... A time to be reaping A time to be sowing A time just for living A place for to die " Twas so good to be young then To be close to the earth Now the green leaves of summer Are calling me home " Twas so good to be young then To be close to the earth Now the green leaves of summer Are calling me home

Every time I listen to this song, my thoughts would drift back to a farm in China where I spent five years during the infamous “cultural revolution “ in 1960s. I was deeply in love with a beautiful girl, but because we came from families in the opposite political spectrums, I did not have the courage to express my love for her. How much I wish that I could sing this song to her back then, just as the Four Brothers did! Last night I had a dream in which I was carrying her in my back, running on the green field.
