I am 65 years old and I grew up on a farm on the Pevemsy Marshes. My father was a dairy and sheep farmer and many lambing seasons were spent in our Shepard Hut on the marshes. We had straw made up as two beds and a pot burner in the corner for heat, which was needed on the marshes as it was bloody cold in those winds.

When tightening up your chuck on your drill driver, go one click in the opposite direction after cranking it down and it locks the chuck preventing it falling out 👍🏻

On most hand chuck drills you can tighten as far as you can then turn back the reverse way (ever so slightly) until you hear a click and it will lock the chuck in place so bits won’t slip. I recently came across this tip and it has helped in a big way.

Happy New Year, Carl. Two things: I watched an old-school Japanese carpenter (via KZfaq of course) auger a similar sized hole in a similar sized beam. He used a block of wood with a "V" notched in it to guide the bit. A couple of others have suggested two boards at right angles, but the block makes more sense to me--stable and you can clamp it. Second thing, the only price I found for green oak timbers in the US is $12.75/linear foot for 6x6, which would make your beams about $260 US, about EU 235, but not FOH and not including shipping. No white oak for timbers in the western US.

In a pinch, I’ve seen the reflective side of a CD/DVD used for the mirror trick as well. Easy to drill through. 👍🏻

Lots of people use old CD's for the mirror. They come with the hole pre-installed!

The mirror trick is also why good quality hand saws are polished to a shine. You use the reflection of the wood you’re cutting in the side of the saw to make sure you’re cutting perpendicular. You can hand saw with no guides and get a square cut every time with a little practice. Never see the concept used for drilling before, but I’ll definitely have to give it a try!

A tip for augers like that which a lot of people don’t realise is that you don’t want to reverse the direction to pull them out, the shape of the auger is so that when rotated clockwise is funnels the chips out the hole, when you reverse that to take it out it sends the chips down and often packs in so tight that the auger gets stuck, if your mid way through a hole and need to back out, reverse it for a second to disengage the screw tip and then change it back to clockwise to eject. A good hard lump of paraffin wax is a good lubricant for them too.

I admire your dogged persistence on drilling those holes, and really like the elegant trearments to the ends of the four main beams.

Loose bit in chuck : there is a simple process called locking a chuck . after u tighten the chuck then loosen it slightly . There are videos to watch about this . Also on hexagonal shank drills you need to close down on the drill while wiggling it to be sure it is closing on the smallest part of the hexagonal shank. That mirror trick is awesome I have a horrible time getting holes perpendicular. One last bit . on deep holes you must frequently pull the drill out to clear the chips to prevent binding up the bit.

Hey Carl, i'm in the middle of the video but, (the gipsy method) if you don't have that mirror, maybe your dad have some old CD that do the same job (and it got a hole already drilled ^^) or, if you have old computer hard disk, you can disassembled it and take the disk which have a super fine mirror finish (+ the really strong magnets). I was thinking this notify idea was clever and then I literally saw it again this morning on Instagram but using an old CD which does the same job 👍🏼.

The mirror seems to have done the trick for you Carl. One other method I’ve seen and mentioned by a few others is using a plunge router with an up cut spiral bit to at least start the hole. Pretty much fool proof and very precise. It’s a recommended way for putting benchdog holes in a workbench top. Looking forward to seeing this project come together!

Enjoying your work on the chasis. When I worked on bridges with Australian hard wood we used to remove the screw off the end if the drill bit. Then cut a hole in the beam to take the drill bit. You have more control over the speed you drill hole. Love the videos.

Hello Carl, just watched you make the template and put a new blade on your bandsaw and wish I could reach into the screen and share a tip with you. If you use a small trim router and freehand a mortice up to your template line, 5mm at a time, your first pass is critical and then the next pretty much follows the first. If you do this from each side then when you bandsaw, there's less blade binding, the blade wants to follow the groove, you have a bit of finished edge to clean up to down the road, it makes your life easier all the way around. I used to work on houses that had traditional beams here in the UK and as a spark would have to route cables through. Seeing has the beams were about 25-40 cm in width an auger was the only tool. Some tips: corded drill for a start, more power and more control ( we used un clutched which requires some delicacy) this will save your festool drill as well, a lot of back clearing in and out at speed, no lube as it binds the wood together and causes more friction, and an auger file to re point the cutting guides (best £12 i spent). You'll be eyeballing straight holes in no time.

Hey my friend, with These kind of wood drills you have to back-up several times to remove the chips from the hole. The bit snapped because the thread was loaded with wood chips and jammed the drill. We all did this failure once. Nice to see that you keep going

Love this series, showing us not only the good things but also all the things that go wrong. Like the mirror, a perfectly good way to get the holes straight, but when that drill bit fell out and took a part off the mirror when you picked it up I couldn't keep myself from LOL. But it can be stressful as the material is too expensive to waste a lot on trying to get it right.
