Green sand formula - how to make molding sand
To make green sand or like it also called molding sand (foundry sand) we need:
1. Buy or dig some clay. I couldn’t find any clay (except fire clay) in the nearby shop and even in the big supermarket. Fire clay is a thing, which is not use during building, and redecoration works now. Of course I mean that it doesn’t use in pure condition though its still important ingredient in many building materials.
I had to dig some clay in the cellar. This cellar was built half a century ago so the floor made of clay. I should also mention that this is brown clay. I’ve heard that it’s recommended to use green (bentonite clay) but I didn’t have it, so used what I had.
2. Buy or dig sand. I bought it because was far enough to the nearest reservoir and river where it’s possible to take sand.
3. If clay and sand are wet you should dry them on the sun or any other accessible way.
4. Make powder/fine of clay and clean the sand if it has any contaminant.
5. My formula of green sand is 77% of sand and 23 % of clay. At first, I tried to use 15% of clay but it didn’t work well. I assume that with green bentonite clay even 15% could be fine but not brown clay.
6. Finally mix sand with clay. During the process, spray some water. You will see that it’s enough when your mixture is able to maintain a form.
That’s all. This green sand formula is working. It is possible to use this molding sand again and again.

For 1kg of mix, if you putt 70% of sand + 30% of clay, you got respectively 700g and 300g of each. In your example you put 1kg of sand + 300g of clay, which then represents more a mix balance of approximatively 75% + 25%. Unless i'm wrong.

Thank you Okto Putsch. I think that you are right but want to assure you that more clay won't harm. :) In the end of the video in a big basin in fact little more clay, so I think there should be approximately 70x30! It's a pity that there is no Noble Prize in math because I could win it! :)

Dural Metalurg yeah yeah, i already experimented, but i just wanted to correct as it tickled my mind at first sight, 'cause you wrote weights in oz, too and as a french guy we only use grammes and kilogrammes, so proportions caught my attention :) In someway, i agree, more clay won't harm, we just have to be cautious with its wetness only.

You are welcome! I made nearly the same when tried it for the first time. In my case at first, I tried 15 %. It could maintain a form but crushed for every quick or wrong move. That's why I took twice more. I think that with green bentonite clay 13-15 should be enough (I saw that people did it) but with brown clay as we know we need much more. I've got some bentonite clay, so will make an experiment in the future. I'd like to understand the difference.

I have a small lead casting project I am doing at home and so far my amateur efforts have not yielded favorable results. I was not using green sand so hopefully, this will help me succeed. BTW, it's a nice change to hear a good Souza march instead of the same old same old stuff a lot of KZfaq channel folks use.

FYI, The "Coastal farms store" in Albany Oregon sells Bentonite (powder) in 50 lb sacks for $12.99. It is used in well drilling. Drillers call it "MUD" . I would check any store that sells farm stuff where you live. I used some years ago to stop a small man made pond from leaking. Just pour it in the water, it goes to the bottom of the pond and stops the leaking. Good Luck, Doug

Hi Doug. Thank you for the information but such things distribution can be very different from country to country. Of course there are companies which drill deep wells to reach underground waters in Ukraine and may be they use Bentonite but that's very specific thing and you can find it probably only using the web and not a local store :).

I use cat litter on mine. I just hit it in the blender and I just use playsand. I have to sift it through two different meshes but it's worth it and cheap. 1.25 for a 5 pd bag of cat litter. And 4.99 for a 50 pd bag of sand.
@DuralMetalurg
@DuralMetalurg 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Drake! I know that cat litter sometimes contains bentonite clay and of course works good for green sand. The issue is that in my town cat litter is based on wood and other type contains silica gel. That's why I had to make this process. :) Anyway, I've found pure bentonite clay, and may be will make a short video about comparison between these two formulas. They are really different.

aquarium sand is really expensive. You can just use sifted play sand from the hardware store, which is only a couple dollars for a 50 lb bag or sand from a creek with the magnetic black sand removed for free. Also a 50 lb bag of silica clay from a pottery shop is only a couple dollars as well and you don't have to mill it like you do with cat piss absorber.

You can get a #5 bag of actual bentonite powder from ebay for around $15, which will allow you to use the more proper 1:9 clay:sand ratio. And people, don't use water; use oil. Water eventually evaporates and will leave you with an inconsistent batch from time to time with you having to add water to it when it starts drying out, at best, or will leave you with a solid mass that you have to pulverise and re mull again if it's not maintained, at worst. Oil does not evaporate and allows the sand to keep a set consistency.

I don't think its a stupid mistake, I almost made an identical mistake when making greensand my first time, but I had to pull myself away from that incorrect line of thought. I just thought I would have said something because its a common mistake and not a stupid one. Maybe make an annotation video about how being precise isn't important? Also, the ratio in the video is less clay not more. Again, I'm just trying to let you know this from my perspective, because if this were the first greensand video I was watched I'd be pretty confused about your instructions so I'd definitely recommend putting up an annotation for people who don't know as much about it.

Yes, it was less in this particular situation on approximately 7%. I just said that if you would use 30% (not 23%) it really wouldn't harm. Less than 20%, in my opinion, can be an issue because green sand won't hold a shape. Ok. I'll try to fix it....

:) Now everything should be fine. I changed proportion in the video description and added subtitles with the correction. KZfaq is not longer support annotations, so now it's not so easy to correct uploaded videos but I think it'll be fine. Thanks for your attentiveness and of course for watching and commenting :)

But 1 000 grams of sand and 300 grams of clay, isn't 70/30 ;) If you mix 700 grams of sand and 300 grams of clay, you get a 70/30 mix ;) ;)

@@DuralMetalurg Or you made a mistake and won't admit it ;) Sound fishy to me if you gave the wrong weights on purpose to check that^^

@@3.63terkin Цей марш називається The stars and stripes forever.
