Greening the ICT sector has emerged as a critical endeavour in our increasingly digitalised society.
With the rapid growth of ICT infrastructure and digital devices, concerns about their environmental impact have come to the forefront. This movement seeks to mitigate the carbon footprint of ICT systems by focusing on energy efficiency, sustainable practices, and responsible product lifecycles. By greening the ICT sector, we not only reduce the environmental burden but also harness the potential of technology to drive a more eco-conscious and responsible digital future.
Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths which aims to increase the profile of women in STEM and create new role models for both girls and women studying or working in STEM. Watch the Ada Lovelace playlist here: • Ada Lovelace Day 2023
Ada Lovelace Day Live 2023 was held at the Royal Institution on Tuesday 10 October.

On those wind turbines - "Just recycle duh!" is nice, but there is a reason those turbines are almost always made of fibreglass, which also happens to be extremely difficult to actually recycle. You need a material that's both very light and strong and as far as I know there are no other options because everything else is either too heavy, too stiff or not strong enough.

Churn..... the one problem governments and industry do not want to solve because they have been purposely going backwards for greater profit. Everything we use could last 2 to 3 times longer or more, but the producer would make half or a third the profit while making a third of the waste and pollution. shipping companies, warehouses and retailers also would see the same 50-60% reduction in income..... I wonder why so few people are talking about it :P

A wasted opportunity to talk incisively and coherently about a serious matter rather than trivial edge cases supported by ropey, inconsistent figures and similes to do with globally "wasted" SIM cards being as bad as a single car driven 5 million miles. 11 minutes to impress upon us some new aspect(s) of the nature and scope of the issues involved and of all the hugely impactful ones to scratch into she chose burying turbine blades without detailing the actual size of "threat" they pose by way of toxicity and immediacy. When the RI chooses an Ada Loveday speaker to outline a topic of such import, especially a woman of colour, I would hope for her to be a beacon I can point my nieces to, a hero, a shining example to inspire. Where was the substance to her arguments? 40 megatonnes of e-waste per annum posing how much of and how many problems and she talked about 2000 tonnes of SIM cards. Disappointed. Write your speech in your native tongue, focus all your effort on the gravity of your subject and then get it translated by machine or expert, then proofed by a native English speaker with knowledge of the subject and then test it on someone representative of the intended audience to see how it lands. Redraft as required. Rinse and repeat if possible.

Note to presenters: Looking nice for your presentation is fine, but if you have to continually adjust an item of clothing while you speak, either don't wear it, or find a way to affix it so that you're not constantly distracting from what you are saying. You're a PhD for crying out loud, how can you fix the problems you're working on if you can figure out how to keep a piece of fabric in place for more than two minutes?
