I never was a Sammy Davis fan, and I believe it was because he had allowed himself to be used as a joke. I wish I had known more about his early dance career, I might have respected him more. I am glad that Gregory Hines took time to reach back to Sammy Davis and remind the nation about so many Tap legends. The photos in the closing credits of "Tap"... wow, an amazing mini history!!

I remember watching on tv the funeral service for Sammy. It was heartbreaking. Then the emotion Gregory shared as he spoke of Sammy, had everyone in tears. I could understand Gregory's emotion. He wouldn't hold back his emotions. That was beautiful! He looked upto Sammy so much. He worked with him, shared tap dancing with him to say the least. Then Gregory carried that love and shared it with his students like myself, at Broadway Dance Center. Now Savion Glover is passing down the legend to his students, what Sammy and Gregory gave him.

I remember when Sammy passed and there was a lot of thunder. The news declared on tv it was Sammy tap dancing in heaven! I felt that was so beautiful for the news to state that. Plus, l didn't doubt for a minute. I really felt he was tapping so all the world could hear him. That sound of thunder wasn't alarming. Its hard to explain. Yet, having studied music & dance myself, l learned noise is something that alerts you. It interferes on what your doing. It calls your attention something is wrong. It's annoying. If you have a dog they will usually go to you to alert you when they sense something is wrong. It bothers them.They'll go to their owner to alert him/her. They're very smart. Plus sensitive. Now, when you hear a sound, sound is usually defined as a gentle vibration from an instant. Like a gentle breeze you don't mind hearing. Like when you hear an instrument playing. When l learned this l found it quite interesting. In today's world with so much advanced technology today, noise & sound can be combined into a sound altogether.

I am not into tap dancing whatsoever but this is really amazing. Hines is incredible, yet Sammy just seems to fucking *float.* Hines uses his body a lot while Sammy looks like he's just standing there & his feet are on auto-pilot. I'm not putting Hines down, and like I said I know almost nothing about tap dancing, but the way Sammy does it is just something *magical.*

I don't think it's disrespectful at all. It's actually a very accurate observation of their styles. No doubt Gregory Hines was amazing and I loved the way he moved. But he still knew how special Sammy's talent was. Magical is exactly the word for it.
@kathleencoop4005
@kathleencoop4005 3 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanschweizer3631 so correct. Many people have commented on Hines’ style. Not disrespectful just a view of the differences. Hines bends, leans into his dance. Some see it as slouching. Just a different method. Many dancers lift and move upward.

Other than loving them and providing for them, I can think of no greater parental responsibility.

Nothing, NOTHING , COULD HAVE KEPT Sammy Davis from appearing at this event, and dancing with Hines. At the end of his life he got one more big jolt of love and appreciation and he received it with love, playfully, creatively. Cry every time I watch this. Btw, those that feel some kinda way about the jokes he endured from even his closest friends, remember he started in the 30’s. When he joined the army it was segregated. When he first layer Las Vegas it was segregated. He could not visit the casinos where he entertained. It was Frank Sinatra who helped him break those barriers at a time when Sinatra was at a low point and it cost him something to demand the hotels let Sammy stay there , eat there, gamble there. When it would have been better for Sammy to leave Frank behind he did not because Frank had stretched out for Sammy. Dean, Joey Bishop whatever, but Frank was a real friend.

As a kid, I watched Shirley Temple and the great Tap dancers that she was paired with. I wanted to learn how to do this too. My aunt decided I should get away from being a Tomboy, and learn ballet- which I hated. I took money from her purse, went to the shoe repair down the street and got my Taps for my shoes. My uncle gave her back the $8 and started taking me to his office on Saturday so I could get lessons. I never got great, but had a lot of fun. Gregory, The Sandman, Sammy and others were great, and I watch the old clips every chance I get. To me, they were magical.

The bit that gets me , is the spontaneous moment when sammy just says ok , I wana dance ( with his health)..You can see how thin he was as the camera filmed him sliding his foot into his shoe. But both those things showed the desire, love, charm and grace of a man who for moments on stage had no cancer...r.i.p one of the greats in the line of robinson, davis jr, brown, jackson...song/dance forever

Ya some people really need to think before they speak. Sammy Davis Jr and Gregory Hines were to 2 greatest Tap dancers on the planet earth. There never has nor will there ever be a dance who could do what they did. People like that Deserve Imortality. Cause it's only with that can the whole world really understand their level of greatness. They were both taken away far to soon.

My sentiments exactly! I been puttin together a "SAMMY" playist tonight. (Got a really good video of him on Arsenio that someone posted). I've seen it a million times but I still get goosebumps when I watch this one and the one that Michael did. Sammy was really a super gifted multi skilled entertainer. I think as I get older, I've come to appreciate more and more what he had to go through to make it in this world.
