I love when a reactor understands, and gets into the spirit of a film. Your reaction to the practical effects mirror my own, as I always wanted to be involved with special effects after watching Star Wars a million times as a wee boy. This was something special for us effects and puppetry nerds. It's fair to say that Joe Dante and Rick Baker had carte blanche to do whatever they wanted this film, and boy did they use that to full effect for Gremlins 2. Also, there was an incredible Gremlins 2 Nintendo game released, where you get to play as Gizmo the entire time!!!! Fun stuff....Great movies make for great memories, and I love to see people enjoy these types of films as much as we did back in the day.

The original GREMLINS, as written by Chris Columbus (Director of HARRY POTTER and HOME ALONE) was more of a horror movie, but Steven Spielberg wanted Gizmo to be a lovable little creature, so that's why the change happened.

The special effects artist who designed the Mogwai and Gremlins in the first movie wasn't available for this film, so they hired the legendary special effects artist Rick Baker. In my opinion, his work in this film is superior to the first. Gizmo looks cuter and is more expressive, while other Mogwai all look different, and the Gremlins look more realistic. Although they're never mentioned in the film, the other Mogwai have names. The grumpy looking one and buck-toothed one are named George and Lenny, and their names, personalities, and appearances are based on the two main characters from "Of Mice and Men". The googly-eyed one is named Daffy, after Daffy Duck. The scary looking one named Mohawk, and its implied that he's a reincarnation of Stripe from the first movie, which is why he enjoys torturing Gizmo so much.
@skeletalk
@skeletalk 7 ай бұрын
That honestly explains so much, I love Rick Bakers work after American Werewolf and (next react) The Howling. You can totally see his style of work now you've mentioned it, somewhat darker and grittier. I genuinely love both designs. I also love how theres like "out of world" lore with the names and stuff, inc Stripe/Mohawk. I love it when companies do that, you can just tell theres so much love into it rather than just a "make money" thing.

The way your talking about modern architecture or even overly simplified designs is how I feel in general as an artist myself. Really detest the lack of creativity and just how sterile everything looks these days. Aside from that, loved your reaction! I was really into these films when I was about 12 years old, this one introduced me to the Lon Chaney Sr. version of Phantom of the Opera which I was reading the book of at the time. This was a long time ago so I might be wrong, but I think I remember reading some trivia at the time that the original plan for the first movie's script was for Gizmo to become a gremlin at the end so that he could fight Stripe.

Back in the day, there was a trend of sequels of movies that start out in the rural or remote areas, moving the action to the city as a sort of "new challenge" or "let's see how they deal with being in the city" or for "change of pace". Reversal of dynamics, etc. Predator 2, Critters 3, Gremlins 2, Short Circuit 2, many others. One could say Crocodile Dundee 2 starting in the city and going back to Australia counts, as well. It's a trope when done well and a cliche when done not so well.

I saw this in the cinema when I was about thirteen and when it got to the bit where it looks like the projector malfunctioned the whole room groaned and booed... and then freaked out and collapsed laughing. It's my favourite cinema memory. There was also a different sequence for home video with channel hopping, which is worth seeking out.

The thing about the gremlins getting wet is that the less water they get wet by the more time it takes for the young ones to grow. But since the sprinklers literally did not stop it took barely any time for the young ones to fully grow into gremlins. It sounds wrong but even once the young ones are born they start immediately multiplying too.

Darn! Ya didn't remark on my favorite - the VEGETABLE gremlin that pops out of the salad. That's my only complaint though. Ya, I wouldn't say hey're really INTENTIONALLY MURDEROUS. They're just full of vice and really reckless, and the death and destruction wrought by them is a result of THAT. I prefer living in the SUBURBS because that way your IN BETWEEN the city and country, rather than completely in one or the other.

Hope you had a great New Years Eve 💙🙂 The reason Christopher Lee is in this is because earlier he was in the sequel to The Howling, which he regretted doing. When he meet Joe Dante, who directed the 1st Howling movie, he apologized to Joe for being in the sequel & said he owed him a favor. And thus, Joe casted Lee in this movie as a favor. Dick Miller ALWAYS have a role in a Joe Dante movie, it's like with Bruce Campbell being in Sam Raimi's movies 😉🙂 There's been talks about a 3rd movie for years, but it never happend. There was even a suggestion for a plot where Gremlins are rampaging in Las Vegas. They did release a prequel animated series last year, not a huge fan of the almost polygon animation style. Haven't seen it. Search the Mountain Dew commercial where Zach Galligan reprises as Billy & Howie Mandel again voices Gizmo. That commercial is basically a pitch for a possible 3rd movie! 😃🙂

Lee didnt' want to be in the Howling sequel? I didn't know there was one (just reacted to 1) (Noticed Dick Miller in Howling too !) Gremlins in Vegas would honestly be so chaotic I'm not against it. I think I'll react to the animation eventually.

@@skeletalk Lee regretted doing the movie afterwards when he saw the actual movie & realised it was sh*t. The sequel is one of those so bad it's funny movies, but in comparison to the 1st movie it was not good at all. There are 4-5 more sequels 😜 It's called The Howling 2: Your Sister Is A Werewolf, but I prefer the alternative title, which I believe it was England that came up with that: The Howling 2: Stirba - Werewolf B*tch 🤣 (I'm not kidding! 😂😜) Yeah, Gremlins in Vegas sounds like a funny, but chaotic, idea indeed & I wouldn't mind it either 😉 You do that, though I would also like to see you doing the Mountain Dew commercial that I mentioned. Take the product away & you basically have the 3rd movie there 😉🙂

I was lucky enough to get some promotional tickets to see this movie at a sneak preview the night before it actually opened. I really liked the first movie, but knew nothing about the second other than it was a sequel. We were all watching the movie, having a good time, when the darned film stutters and melts. Figures! First night, and the film breaks. What are the odds of... oh, wait... oh, no! Aargh! They got us! Yes, we were all totally suckered in by the melted film gag, which made it all the funnier. There are so many good jokes in this one, and some of them are in the background as other stuff is going on. Ted Turner (one of the two influences for Mr. Clamp) had a habit back then of colorizing old black and white movies for his network. So what do they do for the movie? "Casablanca. Now in color. With a happier ending!". Then there's the message for the guy to move his car because it is old and dirty, the classic Canadian dessert the chocolate moose... just so much fun stuff. But the brain gremlin is definitely my favorite. "Has there been a run on the banks yet where you are? It's brutal here. We're advising our clients to put everything they have into canned food and shotguns". Or when he's talking about what they want to see in the city. "There's also street crime. But I believe we can see that for free." Poor Gizmo gets absolutely brutalized. Some of the tortures they put him through are horrendous. A lot of people see the photocopier scene and miss the point. Bright light is painful to gremlins, and can kill them. And what light is brighter than that darned photocopier? It's quick enough that it's just horrifically painful rather than lethal, but it's happening over and over and over.... As much as I like Gremlins, I absolutely adore Gremlins 2. It is utter chaotic lunacy, in all of the best ways.

I'm commenting too much, but here we are....I do believe humanity was never meant to be surrounded by concrete and packed together so closely. Our collective energies feed off one another, and I do believe it has had a negative effect on our "collective conscious". The current zeitgeist of anxiety and madness has so much to do with our disconnect from nature. My favourite podcast "Mysterious Universe", from Australia, has discussed these ideas far more eloquently than I ever could. I do recommend that podcast, along with the KZfaq channel Defunctland. That channel's long form docu-series on Jim Henson will reaffirm your love of his genius. Thanks for doing what you do, and I am so happy to have a like minded person to re-enjoy these films with.

It plays on my mind a lot. We def were never meant to sit in a grey cubicle box all day at a computer working. Wtf does it do to our brains. We're more detached from nature than ever and we literally ARE nature, we're the only animal that's so far removed from it's own environment and it's not natural. One can only consider the bad effects it has on us. Thank you for the love and support! 💙

Gremlins 2 is basically a joke about "how we didnt need a Gremlins 2", according to director Joe Dante.. who only agreed to come back for a 2nd film (making the 1st one almost gave him a nervous breakdown) when WB gave him carte blanche as long as he made a movie with Gremlins in it for Summer 1990. A few facts: * Joe Dante finally got to fully flex his Looney Tunes fandom with this movie. Aside from all the humor, he had Looney Tunes animation legend Chuck Jones animate the intro and outro. Chuck had a cameo in the bar in Gremlins 1, and also Dante's "Innerspace". Looney Tunes actually has 2 classic WW2 era cartoons featuring gremlins (Falling Hare and Gremlins From the Kremlin). *Composer of both films, Jerry Goldsmith makes a cameo at the yogurt counter * Brain Gremlin's accent, provided by actor Tony Randall, is whats called a "mid atlantic" accent.. an "taught" accent common among upper crust New Englanders. Its not quite British, not quite American... probably has more in common with Austrailian by accident. *Gizmos black arm band is a teaditional way of morning the death of someone, in this case, Mr. Wing. *theres an 80s commercial featuring Mr. Wing lecturing Gizmo about teen drunk drivng 😂 in my head canon, his grandson who sold Billy's dad Gizmo got in a DUI and thats why hes not in G2 🤷‍♂️ *No CGI, all practical. Only CGI is the animated CLAMP logo on the tvs. Rest is puppets and animation. * Clamp is supposed to be an amalgam of (80s) Donald Trump and Ted Turner, founder of CNN and a dozen other tv networks. Clamp was supposed to be the villian but John Glover was so charming they ended up redeeming him.. Dante said he regrets that now 😂 *Makeup fx genius Rick Baker redesigned Chris Walas' Gizmo and Gremlin designs... making them cartoonier.. which works for the tone. *there are 2 Breaking Bad cameos in this film.. if you know, you know ;)

I love how on the nose and self-aware the humour of Gremlins is, its soooo good. Yeah Brain's accent really threw me off, cause for a second I was like- wait are you actually british or trying to be or american haha! I didn't realize that about Giz's band thats so precious and makes sense he wouldn't take it off, adorable. of course Giz would get in trouble for drunk driving 😂 "Clamp" is actually hilarious omg oooh what were the cameos!!

@@skeletalk so Chuch Jones, the Bugs Bunny animator... is in Gremlins 1 as the guy at the bar complimenting Billy on his Mrs Deagle dragon drawing. The actor who plays Tuco in Breaking Bad has a cameo in part 2 as the mail delivery guy who whistles the Gizmo theme. The actor who plays Hank in Breaking Bad is the cop that shoots the gremlin goo at the end.. "it moved, sir". Also, John Astin, who played Gomez in the 1960s Addams Family tv show has a cameo as the janitor who gets Gizmo wet with the drinking fountain. Composer Jerry Goldsmith is the white haired customer at the yogurt counter who says "Did she say 'rats'?". And Leonard Maltin, the real film critic who gives Gremlins 1 a bad review, is literally just reading his actual review of the movie 🤣

I wouldn't call the changes the Gremlins undergo in this movie 'evolution', they are more like mutations. Also, the electric powers are not quite like those of the Flash, the Flash is more about super-speed (even though he can produce electricity sometimes). he only "third" Gremlins production I've learned about is a CGI animated series that aired on MAX (a streaming service associated with Warner productions) last summer. Titled "Gremlins, the Secrets of the Mogwai" it takes placed in 1920s Shanghai revealing how Mr. Wing, the elderly shopkeeper, met Gizmo when he was a boy (Wing, that is). I don't have the service, so I haven't seen the series as a whole, but various people have posted clips her upon KZfaq. It even provides an origin story for the Mogwai, one steeped in Chinese type mythology. Oh, while the "Brain" gremlin died in this movie, he proved popular enough that the digital series revisited the concept. George Takei (Sulu of Star Trek) voices the character.

Google is not your friend with the question how many Gremlins Films are there, only 2 films (two of the best though - favourite one depends on my mood with these two) that 3rd one it shows is fake. Glad Critters has been mentioned to you, that and the second one are fun. Some of my favourites (when it comes to effects and make up) that are rarely reacted too and I'll think you'll enjoy are Waxwork (1988), Troll (1986 not the second one - god not the second one), The Company of Wolves (1984), House (1986), House II the Second Story (1987), Little Shop of Horrors (1986) and Tales from the Crypt Demon Knight (1995). Also Legend (1985) and Never Ending Story (1984) for fantasy.

i heard christopher lee didn't want to do this film, but he did it to return a favor for a friend. and he's a man of his word. I do have some film recommendations mostly with putters. i must recommend the whole critters saga, 1-4 and two of their newest movies (i forget what dates they were made but i know the latest was 2018 the older films were in late 80's and early 90's another film recomendation is called meet the feebles, it's like the muppet show but on crack with a female hippo instead of a female pig character. it is a litte extreme, but the puppets are amazing. I love the spinx female cat puppet she's a mean character and only in 4 scenes all short but her design is so pretty.

Hi Katie first off Happy New Year hope you had a good one, also I'm glad you enjoyed this one I like both but the second one just a little bit more, mostly because of Christopher Lee he will always be my favourite Dracula, but you are correct it does have a better story line than the first and the talking Gremlin was such a good addition to the story, Also agree with you about the ugliness of modern buildings, the county I live in Oxfordshire has some very beautiful buildings especially Oxford itself, also I live in a village in The Cotswold part of Oxfordshire which has some very stunning buildings in it's self so I'm surrounded by amazing architecture, I have only ever been to London a handful of times and it was fun place to visit but hell no I would not want to live there, As for Gremlins 3 it maybe released sometime in 2025 I say maybe as they only have script at the moment and nothing else from what I've read, so it's a case of watch this space, also will you be drawing a spider gremlin as I'd love to see your version of one,
@skeletalk

Hiya!! Happy New year! 💙 Yeah adding Lee to this was an absolute treat, hes amazing. One of the best Dracula's for sure. I just overall loved this storyline, 1 is so heartwarming and christmassy and 2 has a fantastic message and story with x10 chaos. I used to spend a lot of time in Oxfordshire when I was younger and at the university, its an absolutely beautiful place (save for the lethal cyclists) but yeah, I love Oxford, beautiful buildings. I drew Spider Gremlin at the start of the video! :)

Hi @@skeletalk I guess it never registered with me what the drawings at the beginning of the vid where then as I did notice the spider Gremlin my bad, And yes I agree with you about the lethal Cyclists in Oxford anyone would think they owned the place, and what you mean when you was younger to me you look like you've only just reached your twenties, Anyway was wondering if you would consider reacting to some of the old Hammer Horror films as I think it would be a lot of fun but that's if you haven't already seen them of course.

Love this more than the first and the ways it pokes fun of the first. Still no CGI in this film. Nor will there be in the third one when they make it according to the director Still all practical and optical FX. That film critic Leonard Maltin actually disliked the first movie. I can't remember how they were able to get him to do that cameo.

Btw, there is no Gremlins 3 yet. The original writer Chris Columbus has been trying to make it (and direct it) for years but honestly, for me, no Joe Dante, no deal. It was Columbus' original idea but Dante's sensibility is what makes Gremlins what it is. There is an animated series for HBO MAX (now just MAX) that has basivally been buried. Havent seen it but it looked terrible. Critters 1, 2 and 3 are as close as we can get to more Gremlins films at the moment.
@skeletalk
