I am one of those guys that likes to practice regularly at 50, 60, or 70 yards - even longer if I have the room. I have no intention of taking a shot at a whitetail at that distance, but I figure if I am comfortable shooting at 60 yards, it should make the 20 or 30-yard shots feel a little easier.

Thanks again for the help getting my bow set up this year. Exchanging emails, pics of the setup - you went above and beyond. I hope everyone appreciates what you and other you tube personalities do for us. You are making “the industry” better. People, let’s do what we can to support the good ones.

Love the channel, lots of great points, but one thing I’d like to mention as food for thought. The point you made about being able to show multiple deer moving after arrow release isn’t entirely fair or objective. Yes your target will move and you should be aware of that, but the distance matters. I don’t shoot animals past 30 BUT There are also many videos of long shots where the animal doesn’t move a bit. Why is this? It’s only natural for any species, prey or predator, to react move violently to closer threats. This is a very easy and provable thing to conduct an experiment on. Everyone has jumped out from behind the hall corner to scare a family member and they freak out. Well try it from across the yard and see what they do. You probably never even did that because you knew it wouldn’t have the effect you wanted! bang on your stand when a deer is right below you and observe the reaction, then bang on it when one is 70 yards away and observe. It’s not nearly the same because they (as well as humans) can instantly register if that noise presents an immediate threat. I’m not advocating for long shots unless you are very well trained, just food for thought and trying to be fair and objective.

I started bowhunting in 1985, long before rangefinders and when the wheels (not cams) were about 2" in diameter. I remember when a "fast" bow was 230 fps. The industry has definitely come a long way, good in most ways but a detriment to hunters in others.

Glad someone is finally saying it. Seems like the in thing to do, especially on social media, is blame "the industry is out to get you, etc". This is arguably the most affordable and highest quality of hunting/archery gear we've ever had (if you compare inflation, quality, etc.) Great video!

I truly enjoyed how this Guy presented his material and his overall philosophy. Just subscribed and will be viewing more from him. Heading to PA in October to archery hunt (crossbow) for the first time. I know I will be taking some of his input along for the trip too. True words! I once read a statement from a neuro scientist, where he said an arrow has to move with at least 700 fps to beat the reflexes of a deer and hit it before it dogdes away at 30-40 yds. Unfortunately i can't remember where i found that. So it doesn't matter if you arrow is going 250 or 320 fps.

Spot on. I used to be one of those guys that bought a compound, bought arrows as suggested by shop owner and had no idea about bow tuning . sight in and good to go . ( why does that arrow wiggle on the way to the target) ? and I paid the price, missed shots and wounded deer . Things are different now . I know how to tune my bow to the bell curve arrow ,Thanks to you . I know of archers that don't want to change what they have always done . And they can't figure out why a shot went bad . or why they can't hold steady , etc. Thanks again ,. Great content .

You can definitely range timber. Before I ever owned a range finder, I stepped off the last tree in my effective range. I love timber it gives a breakdown of yardage.

Agreed. I'm hunting upstate Ny. I practice out to 40. But, on ALL of the spots I hunt I'd be lucky to get a 25 yard shot. Thick stuff! Thanks for linking Grant Woods. More people need to see his stuff. He's doing some great work on soil health over too.

Thai video is full of common sense.Man the first thing I do in stand is to range specific spots so I know within a yard or two where that deer is.And in southern Michigan with thick cover I don’t even consider anything over 30.I know my lane and limitations

I started bowhunting in the early 90s during golden eagles hay day.The only bow I remember peaking 320 fps back then was Mathews Black Maxx in their early days which had a super low brace height.I feel spoiled today and the era which I started is probably the reason I lean towards more forgiving setups

This is so true man! Especially when the hunter stops a deer at 30+ and the deer is now alert. That is bad news…that deer is going to drop a mile. I shot a buck at 37 yards last year and the only reason it worked was because he was quartering away and his ears were facing forward. His reaction time was slower than an alert deer. He was also feeding which resulted him in being distracted! Keep up the great content man. Also thanks for the shout out💪🏻

Just got back from a Montana Elk hunt. 60 yard shot. Calm day, standing, level ground. Elk ducked the string. Bent an 540 grain FMJ arrow. Went in at the Perfect spot.... saw him pushing cows 2 days later

Awesome to see another Average Jack Archery 🏹 video. What a good vlog rant while scouting. Always good to clarify some misconceptions by many. I actually got a newer bow 🏹 a week before my wedding on August 20th. A Prime Black 3 that the owner of the new local archery 🏹 shop only ran 50 shots through it. I switched my Black Gold 5 pin (not sure why I have 5 pin instead of 3 since I doubt that I shoot past 35 yards at whitetail deer 🦌(15, 25, 35) and that Hamskea Primer rest to it and put the 4 pin Trophy Ridge back on and new Trophy Ridge whisker biscuit on the old PSE bow that you saw. After shooting my new bow at 65 pounds and 29.5 in draw and going back to the 60 lb old bow it felt so easy to draw. Sadly I only have 4 arrows of my Carbon Xpress Mayhem SDS 350s for season. They don’t sell that arrow at Cabela’s anymore. I might have to order some arrows possibly from Sirius, Victory or Black Eagle 🦅 once I get back home from my Alaskan waterfowl and fishing 🎣 trip the third week of September. Super tight window and season will already have started on the 25th. I hate being last minute but my wife and I were planning a wedding 💒

I live in CO. I'd shoot an elk out to 60. I have my first whitetail tag this year and there's not a chance in hell I'd shoot at one over 35 yards. I should be able to set up for a sub 20 yard shot 🤞. Great vid.

The “industry” is eliminating the human element out of hunting. There’s always a product available that will help achieve a higher degree of success as compensation for woodsmanship, time spent in the woods or desire to become a better hunter.

It’s crazy the difference in bows today, just in the last couple months got back into bows, the last time I had anything to do with bows was 1995 on the ASA tour. Shooting 40 yards was considered long range back then and was almost unheard of for people to hunt past 25 yards.

Speed only means you miss faster...that all. Fred Bear never shot 300fps. Remember folks...we are here only because our forefathers were real good with a stick tipped with a sharp rock. I shoot year round,and NOTHING will ever take the place of practice under hunting conditions.

Random deer hunting comment Last year I did my first successful spot and stalk on a white-tail. The only reason I was able to sneak up to them through the woods while they bedded down on a small patch of grass bordering a marsh was because it was raining. Right at the last second of shooting lite I double lunged a bedded down doe at 46 yards with no rangefinder. It was a once in a decade shot for me. That's why I encourage my friends who hunt to do as much 3D archery as they can practicing judging ranges

Great video, even though I added to your "speed conversion" I love the place it's coming from. Being in a shop you know the level that most archers are. With all the information on KZfaq and most people don't utilize it. If you want more out of your bow. You'll have to put a lot more time into it.

I started in "81" I remember bows with four "wheels" not even cams. Two wheel bows where the "wheels" were on hangers.

I think you are out in left field but I waited until you invited me to comment before I did 😉 I don't think you are way off base, but I don't agree with your logic for my situation out west and I don't agree with not ranging shots. As far as speed goes, I will gladly give up a bit of speed for more energy on target at range. You are right, deer move a lot, especially the skittish coues deer I am so fond of hunting. You hit the nail on the head in a recent video though when you said it does not matter how fast your arrow is, it isn't beating the sound there. So there are a number of considerations to think about. One, the more energy transferred from your bow to the projectile, the better. The obvious advantages of that are having more energy to work with to start and less energy that your bow has to turn in to sound. Two, heavier projectiles retain more energy down range, which is pretty critical at 50 yards or so. I am bewildered that with rifles, the benefits of higher bc at range is not even a debate, but in the archery world, somehow people are not convinced. Simply put, increased mass with the same coefficient of drag and same cross sectional area makes for higher ballistics coefficient which means both more retained energy downrange and less wind drift, which is ideal for maximizing precision and for ensuring that your broadhead will do its job even when the animal moves and your arrow does not hit where you intended (how bad did that run on sentence bother you Mr. English teacher? 😉). It is going to miss your intended spot anyways if the animal is going to move. With that in mind, know that your chance at needing to break bone is going up a lot when you shoot at distance regardless of the velocity of your arrow. A light arrow is the wrong tool for the job at range even if it is faster. This is of course assuming that all arrows we are talking about are tuned well. That is a must and nobody who knows anything is advocating for shooting arrows that fly poorly. Lighter arrows with flatter trajectory are a better setup, like you said recently, if you are hunting dense woods with small windows to shoot through with lots of overhanging branches, but not for long range. As far as ranging goes, I have no doubt that people who are a good judge of range and don't range every shot will take home more deer than I will. I also will bet that the average person who thinks they are good at ranging will wound more deer than I will because of poor shots. Nobody will die of starvation if I don't bring home a deer, so I am perfectly fine not shooting if I don't have the opportunity to range, even if it is on a 110" coues buck. "Too bad I didn't have the opportunity to range that deer and KNOW I am making an ethical shot" is a lot better of a feeling than "wow was I wrong about that yardage and that was horrific to watch." I have done that before with a rifle and I assure you, that was a self correcting mistake. All that being said, I am not one to complain about the industry and them advertising using speed. I think for hunting bows, it would be more useful to all kinds of hunters to build a KE curve with arrows of different mass shot from a standard draw length and poundage. That would give hunters useful information regardless of what type of arrow setup they use. It also might show some bows to be more efficient at transferring energy. I don't expect that to happen though and it will never happen unless peoples' mentality towards arrow ballistics fundamentally changes. IBO is really just a marketing tool though because guys like big numbers and having a bigger number than the next guy. It's not something to complain about, it just is what it is. Anyhow, I don't agree with your assessment, but I find you to be pretty rational and I like your content, so keep up the good work. Good luck this fall. Hopefully your other spots are more productive than the spot you just checked.

Speed, FOC, draw weight, in the end the only thing that matters is accuracy! Accuracy is number 1. I started bow hunting in the 80s and had to switch to a cross bow do to an injury a few years ago. Now I'm healed up and back to a compound and it hasn't mattered one bit how fast, how much or how long, all that matters is being able to hit what your aiming at.

sitting here listening to you ramble on about what's grinding your gears, and all I can think about is how clear those woods are. Going 20 yards here in southern Louisiana takes time, in the woods your in I could cover miles in the time it takes me to go 200 yards. Am I over exaggerating, probably, am I still captivated by the lack of underbrush, definitely.

I really appreciate these “keep it real” videos. It’s so easy to get caught up in whatever so and so hunting celebrity did and think that’s both normal as well as ethical. For many of the influencers they have to push the limits of practical capabilities in order to keep viewers interested.

Excellent points on all levels! I come from shooting a Jennings bow to getting into traditional and back to compounds! Trust me I've come close to seeing it all! My conclusion is if you're comfortable and completely accurate with your shot placement you don't need a 90lb Cape buffalo bow!!!!! In fact, when one looks toward the ladies platform they do exceptional at lower poundage and harvest just as many animals!!!!!! Just a thought. Excellent video Jack

Before I hunted deer in my youth, i was taught to hunt small game , And as an adult learning the compound bow ( 2nd year) I shot targets until I was happy with my ability to hunt , I started on ( Australia ) Rabbits , fox's , then under 30 yards small deer , and I wont shoot over 30, as I cant predict a fast fill . I have a rifle for the long shots, but their is something raw and natural and quiet about Bow hunting . 60lbs , fixed blade ,400 grain, 260ish fps , 27 1/2 draw , PSE drive nxt , I always shot small game before I go for deer.

Thanks Jack I shot a recurve and then a compound 35% let off next now I shoot a pse carbon bow 80 to 90% let off amazing bow weight now Is only 3.2 to 3.5 pounds now ,never used a release ever untill I used a Boss hogg Is amazing ,black gold site with 010 mico pins , shoot Victory vap Elite arrows 400 166 dia cut thru the wind Its amazing. I'm 62 now I cant believe how good bows and Equipment are now. I shoot 80 and 100 yards for practice. Fifty yards Is not hard at all now I hunt the west coast longer shots are the normal out here,compared to what It could do back then ,I cant even believe It.....

Uphill both ways, so glad I'm not the only one!

If I hold center kill zone my 20 pin is still in lungs at 30 yards and my 30 yard pin is in lungs at 20. That is with a 290 fps arrow. If my bow was a little slower I would reduce arrow weight to keep that 290.

Great video. I myself like to keep my bows between 280-285. However i do prefer mechanicals but not because of tuning issues. I love the giant cuts they produce and the accuracy is nice too. As you said deer move every time and i like knowing I’m going to hit behind my pin. I think every hunter should put in the time or effort being the best they can be with the best equipment they can afford, once the arrow leaves the bow you’ve done all you can do. About time someone gave a reality check to the real hunting deal, I'm in Florida I shoot two bows pse xs 60 lbs. And a old gold eagle updated equipment 77 lbs 500 grn. Arrow on pse and 625-650 on the golden eagle Florida is heavy under brush and tree's most shots are 30 yards and under so doing the math I opted for pass thru verses the so called speed arrow and the truth be told finding the right foc.your shots are smoother and more accurate and you surprisingly will find a little more forgiving, anyway keep up the good work man you got a fan in Florida.

Form shoots shots consistently even with an untuned bow. Most people haven’t done enough work of form to complain about anything imo. I’ve spent ten years working on form and I’m still only comfortable at about 60 on an elk on decent footing and no wind. Tuning does no good if form isn’t atleast in the ball park to start with. Wish they'd make more forgiving bows, I think in the future I'll be buying target bows to hunt with, the Bowtech Reckoning is my next planned purchase. 35" Ata, 7.25" brace height, yup sounds forgiving. Speed doesn't bother me, my hunting arrows this year are traveling at a blazing fast 219 FPS, lol, next year I'm dropping down some weight this was a fun experiment learned a lot from it.

Great take on "the industry". I also don't know where this "selling speed" accusation has been coming from lately. Most companies have been sticking to the 330-345 advertised IBO speed for the past few years but the modularity and ease of tuning has been where the significant improvements have been. Not to mention manufacturers are achieving those speeds with the most comfortable to shoot platforms we have ever had. I guess when things get too good people complain about marketing?

I shoot 423 gns at 263. I range trees before I climb and then again after. In some areas I hunt often I have ribbons on trees. 2 equals 20, 3 equals 30 etc. makes ranging easy. Takes some time but worth it. I’ll gladly shoot a clam deer at 45 as opposed a skittish deer at 20. Ranging isn’t hard but it is a process. A quiet 250 fps bow is deadly to 50 of you have the skill to make the shot and have done your ranging homework.

Deer react amazingly quick , get one that is already alert they are even quicker , watching them drop down to bolt you are dealing with three movements , down , side left or right & forward . Take advantage of white noise and avoid taking a shot at an alert deer , keep your shot under 20 yards .

Weird you mention being light or under spine, I feel like I see the opposite the local practice range, 60-65lbs bows normal size guys so I assume 27-29” arrows but crazy stiff 250, 200 and judging from trajectory a fair amount of weight (much slower and more arc than my wife’s 37lbs bow even with her “heavy” indoor arrows). I kinda figured super heavy was a thing now. Now speaking of arrow weight, would be cool to see a video from you on long distance target arrow set up and weight. I now have a dedicated target bow and tons of room at the public range to set up a target at 100-110 safely... it’s a ton of fun

I started shooting in 1982 with a hoyt. Today, I am shooting a Matthews and the difference is totally amazing. The industry guru’s, rifle and archery, promoting long range shooting, is just sad. They should know better. The object is to get CLOSE. ETHICS MATTERS !!! It’s hunting.

In Minnesota the only way you can hunt with a cross bow is if you have a shoulder injury and have a doctors note personally even if I could hunt with one I would always pick a compound bow over a cross bow!

LOL, I've been shooting that Hoyt Xtec since 2011, my old man handed it down to me. Finally upgraded to a PSE Fortis 33 this year. I will say that old Hoyt has killed a lot of deer.

I have a cheap bear authority that I got on sale. She works well and didn't take long to get tuned up and grouping. I would like a Mathews but I also have other hobbies I like more. So till that bow dies it's what I'll be using.

My first compound bow was a Bear Whitetail Hunter in the early 80’s. It would hard to put that against a modern bow and even call them both a “compound bow.”

It was made somewhere in the 80s early it killed deer had a scope with cross hairs and some on what looked to be a magnifier aka grandma's magnified glass that didn't work but it was mine and I could shoot it back then a 30 yard shot was long on a deer and difficult. I remember the first doe I shot at she was @ 20 I think atleast it was 20 paces to my pace standards. She jumped the KAAPOOWWWW CLANK BANG TWANAAANG. SHIT SHE WAS OUT OF SIGHT BEFORE THE ARROW MET THE DIRT BELOW I THINK .LOL 😆

Elk don't dodge arrows like whitetails. That's why that can make such long shots ethically. Not sure, but I think mule deer don't duck as fast as whitetail either.

The problem with speed advertising, is that it’s not what kills, which leads to poor arrow builds. A bow being fast is excellent, dumping arrow weight for a chrono speed is not.

Archers today, have the ability to make the perfect arrow. You have the channel. Encourage them to make their arrow and broadened the best that it can be. Your bow must be tuned to you. Your arrow and your choice of broadened must be tuned to the bow.. You can't fix the human factor. Today's archer has the ability to fix everything else. Practice daily, and have fun.

I completely agree that speed is important, it's just annoying when you search for a bow review and you have to scroll past 50 (exaggerating) speed tests before you find someone talking about how the bow shoots, noise, accuracy etc.

Well said. Another thing I see is people who don’t practice shooting there bow. Then they make a bad shot or miss completely then they blame there equipment.

I have shot so many deer with a PSE Nova and could drive tacks (almost) from 10-30, and still excellent at 50 yards. Old Hoyt Supermax bow ($300) shot a doe in the heart at 40 quartering to me by a lot. $1,500 bows aren’t necessary.

Broadheads is where I think the industry sometimes over promises. The commercials and advertising sell the old blood trail thing . You don't hear about the failures. Very few folks ever talk about plan B which does occur. Plan for the worst and practice for the best because as you said, they move.

I have a 30.5" draw 63 lb. DW Chill x 415gr arrow at 285 fps speed comes easy. Reading a deers body language and not alerting them to your presence is also huge when it comes to string jumping. Ted Nugent stresses stealth and he is correct. Watch how many deer he arrows with his 50-55 lb draw weight and 400 grainish arrows 🎯

I personally am hindered by a short draw length. I still maintain 290fps with 365 grain arrow and fixed broad heads. I’ve not shot a deer past 30 yards and I have never, not had a pass through. Practice and a sharp broad head are my secrets, I guess.

my 2006 Tribute is a parallel limb bow that shoots as good as my friend's elite Kure.

My complaint isnt speed, speed is good, its short axle bows... as a fellow outlier, im 5'11" with a 30.5" draw (im a gorilla) i prefer a 35" axle bow and theres not a whole lot of options in the hunting bows.

Lookup Bear Whitetail Hunter compound. Compare that to today's bows. Shot with finger release, rubber rest and no sights. Lots of guys killed deer with those.
