Hi Nicko, thank you for watching! Ultimately, all substrates should be installed as per the manufacturer's recommendations in line with the relevant construction standards enforced at the time. This is a common and explicit stipulation documented by membrane manufacturers before applying any waterproofing system. This is not a question of whether an alternative method will do the job, or is suitable, as chances are that a waterproof membrane and bandage system over unflushed Villaboard joints may be fine long term. It is however a question of culpability, and the use of unsanctioned alternatives in the event of a failure. Especially when the waterproofer knowingly accepts a substrate not installed to spec. Applying a membrane system over properly installed surfaces removes any ambiguity. We hope this helps :)
