I have a 2006 Durango with the 4.7. Everyone told me it wouldn't last. I bought it for $1000 with 132,000 miles on it. I now have 273,000 and it still runs like a beast. I never had a problem with it. 😂

@@robertminks940 I've got a 2000 Durango with 167,000 original miles and it's still going strong. My friend had 300,000 original miles on his 4.7 Mopar before needing a rebuild. You can't believe everything you hear on YT.

Same, im at 244 right now. Might need a new engine soon though. Apparently dropped one of those seals on a quart of oil down into the engine and worn down one of main bearings. There's a bit of shavings in the filter/ oil pickup. I tore the engine down because It started knocking near 5k rpms under load, found the little oil quart seal tucked into the oil pickup tube, checked rod bearings and those look fine, has to be main bearings that got messed up. But need to take the engine out to replace the mains so might as well put another engine in. The cost of grinding the crank is $150, then add new rod/main bearings, plus an oil pump because it has recirculated metal particles, stuff starts adding up. I can get a used engine from a junkyard for $400 + tax. I could technically fix my current engine but dont feel like it, one of the valve cover bolts snapped so I had to drill a different hole and use another off center bolt, also one of the spark plugs is cross threaded, and a couple of the oil pan bolts are cross threaded as well LOL. The oil pan bolts where cross threaded because I dropped the pan and bent it and then straigthened it with a hammer again but the bolt holes are too precise, didnt quite line up afterwards with the bolts on the block so I just forced the bolts in (they come in an out just fine with a bit of force tho). The valve cover bolt snapped because I was tightening it a bit more to try and stop a leak after I put in a new valve cover gasket, turned out the installation was fine but excessive blow by was causing it to blow oil through the gasket. Fixed that one by routing both valve cover breather hoses directly to the intake manifold (like the pcv is). The spark plug was cross threaded by a mechanic who put them in. If you spend a couple minutes fighting it it will come out but the threads are messed up.

@@user-wm3fc1sk1p Damn. Yea i guess if you have to go through all that you might as well just have the engine rebuilt. I would love to keep mine forever it's a tank, but I live in Buffalo NY and everything gets rusty. I had a Jeep with the 5.7 and it was at around 220,000 miles but the frame rotted away and i just got rid of it because thet wanted almost 4000 to do the frame over for me. I don't know a ton about cars so idk if that was cheap or not but i just got rid of it because i didn't have that much just lying around to throw into the truck.

Exactly! Four engines with so few miles. It’s clearly not the truck. It’s the owner and whoever is “ taking care of it “. I’ve owned three Dakotas, my dad has owned two and I just bought my fourth. All of them went well into the high 200k to mid 300k marks and were still rolling strong when I sold them. His current Dakota has over 400k on the original motor/ tranny and he’s done just regular maintenance and a few small things. But that thing cranks right up and will take you anywhere. We just got home from a trip to Montana and then back to southeast Texas in that truck and we had zero problems. I would trust that truck to take us anywhere in the country even at over 400k miles. Even though the MPG isn’t the best for road trips compared to the cars we have. We’re driving the truck as much as possible because we want to see how many miles we can put on the original motor/ tranny.

Well you know he says a old hemi 2000 era is 650hp😅 🙈 that says enough. And then he recommends pulling a backhole with it christ thats borderline for a 3500 with a Cummings or deramax diesel. They tow those on low boy semis for a reason there 18000lbs. This guy dont know shit.

I’m only selling my Dakota because I want a Ram with the 4.7L. He has the audacity to say “if you were a genius you’d buy a Tundra”. Did you know the new Toyota Tundra only has a V6? Plus, old Tundras suffered oil sludging too. Know how I know? Happened to my father. 2007 Tundra, sludge after 100,000mi. Changed his oil regularly, took care of it, second motor. Then he bought a 2015 that did the exact same thing. No thanks. I like my V8 trucks. I ain’t no tree hugging V6 wimp truck driver who drives ultra slow pulling a pencil in the back seat as “cargo” with his high beams on all the time and kpop music playing. I like to go off road, get places, listen to that V8, work on my vehicles, and most importantly I needed something that won’t run me up an arm and a leg for a truck slightly better. And for $3,000 you can’t ask for more. Invested $3,000 and it paid itself off to own. I love the Magnum: it’s a workhorse of an engine. It’s not a 318, but it’s good enough to be placed up there.

I had a 2005 1500 with the 4.7 had like 220k miles on it still ran good, and currently have a friend with a Cherokee 4.7 with 240k miles. I guess everyone's experience is different lol

01 dakota, 279k and counting, bought it for 600 at an auction, been driving it for 6 years as my daily, it gets 20+ mpg highway and 20 in town. The only issues ive had were previous owners engine maintenance such as worn out injectors,02 sensors, and i switched oil to 0w40 mobil 1 for the arctic climate -60° f to 80° f. One thing to be super careful about is to only use mopar approved coolant and bleed the system properly, otherwise you will be buying an engine very soon! And of course make sure your water pump, thermostat etc is up to snuff, dont buy cheap parts or you will buy a very expensive engine😂😂😂😂

These magnum moters are the shit bro my 3.7 liter has 283k and it runs so smoothly still lol. It had been ran it out of oil before and it burned oil for a little while but I put some Lucas into it and now it's running like a brand new one.😂

I had a 08 ram with the 4.7 had 130k worry free miles till it got totaled. Was one hell of a truck. I miss it. The 4.7 is an underrated motor. Especially 08+ it made 310 hp. Not bad.

Had a Grand Cherokee WJ with 337k miles. 4.7 PowerTech V8. I now own a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 with 191k original miles. Runs like a champ.

I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 4.7. I got 338,000 out of the first engine before I swapped it out. I now have 471,000 with the second engine (131,000 on this one). I change my oil between 4000-5000. Avoid overheating at all costs.

03 Durango - 186k miles and going strong. Smooth, reliable power. Valve seals at 160k, other than that no other internal engine repair. ANY engine will have failures if overheated. Just because the people you know can't maintain a cooling system or watch a temp gauge doesn't make this a bad engine.

I have an 03 dodge Ram with this motor. I just had it rebuilt at 208,000 miles and I beat the shit out of it. It’s been a great motor. I was not kind to it in my 20’s or my 30,s but I’m going to be a better owner this time around. It’s always got 21 mpg on the hwy and 16 around town if I keep my foot out of it. I’m also still running on the original automatic transmission with no issues ever! I do understand that many people have had problems with rams but I am here to say that I am a fan.

My 2005 Ram with 4.7 had 225,000 and was running fine when I sold it. My current 2011 Ram 4.7 has 146,000 with only a water pump change and normal maintenance. The 4.7 is just fine.

I see so many negative comments on the 4.7, even more on the last gen 08-13, don't know why, I know most engines have their flaws, but I think the 4.7 is just fine.

Rebuilt, my 4.7 at 308,000 just because I wanted to (valve stem seals, leaking oil, )and now I’ve got 400,000 on my truck and still going strong love the 4.7 if you take care of it and don’t let it overheat it’s a good engine. I do agree they were given the opportunity I would get the hemi it’s got more power and way better gas mileage.

2007 ram 1500 here got it at 60K now has 189,689 with the 4.7 magnum. All I’ve done to the engine is a water pump and a radiator , spark plugs and a few sensors. Other then that it runs brand new. And 3k consistent oil changes, though I do think the valve stem seal needs to be replaced and probably some gasket in the front that’s letting coolant seep out I haven’t had a problem, 545RFE transmission is butter smooth I have maintenances the filter and fluids on it every 30k sense I’ve hade it.

Bought a Ram new in 2008 with the 4.7 which has 16 spark plugs. Still runs great, I had to put on a new water pump last year, new plugs at 60000 upper plugs at 100000… I have always changed oil myself at 5000 using full synthetic. I now have 130000 miles with no issues, trans is fine. I had a 2005 prior to this one, no problems. The mechanic at A1 auto has a 2008 as well and did a review with the same engine, gave a run down of minor things to look out for which cost very little in repairs. Not saying you haven’t seen what you’ve seen, but regular maintenance goes a long way on any vehicle.

Was it the 4.7 or the Hemi? The Hemi I had went well over 300k, multiple transmissions but the engine was very strong all the way.

I've had 2, and I'd bet money that after 200k. they all have the timing chain slap or the lifters knocking. And yes, the seats fall out.... while i wouldn't call them crap most machinists and mechanics have the same opinion regarding the motor.

The reason these engines fail left and right is mainly due to heat like you said, commonly due to improperly bleeding the cooling system. There is also an argument for the fuel rail design being the cause of passenger side cylinders dropping seats; though I haven't seen a pattern on "the back two" dropping as you claim. Take apart a 4.7 and you'll be very surprised at what you see - utilizes a bedplate/girdle as opposed to main caps, heads that flow very well, bracing throughout the block, and the list goes on. Stock pistons and rods are the weak points and those only need to be replaced if you're intending to run high boost, a large shot of nitrous or high RPM NA, but around 400rwhp is where you'll want to go forged. Catch cans are also a good idea. The aftermarket is why it never took off as a motor to mod. Tolerances are also very tight on this motor, but that is a blessing and a curse. If you pull a head, get it decked, and same goes for the exhaust manifolds. Of the few motors I've built, I've always torque plated them when over-boring, and my machinist has said each time that it was merely unnecessary as they do not distort when torquing down the head bolts, likely due to the bracing among other things. Never had to hone the mains either which is likely due to the bedplate design and overall rigidity. That all said, still baffles me why they put them in the Rams when they had the Gen 3 Hemi around; however, they make sense in the Dakotas and Gen 2 Grand Cherokees. And the majority of owner's maintenance patterns are why this engine got a bad name.

Don't even know why you bothered replying. This guy is a straight up 4.7/ dodge hater. He basically said we should all be running toyotas (he's one of those guys🤣) Bros trying to pretend these engines are made out of rubber. You can overheat them a bit and they aint gonna drop no valve seats. As a matter of fact if you drive on the highway 90-115 constantly the coolant temp will go slightly over the halfway point and all will be fine. As a matter of fact everytime you turn this things off when warm and come back to the car like 5 minutes later temps will actually be a bit over the halway mark...

They definitely didn't belong in the Rams like you said. My dad had an 04 Ram quad cab. It was a gutless wonder and thats putting it nicely. I couldn't believe how underpowered it was. At the time I had a 97 F150 with 160k miles and a 4.6 liter making only 210 hp at every rpm & any driving situation it was more powerful.

I have a 2000 dodge Dakota sport 4.7 v8 magnum. That was previously unmaintained and given to me. It's got 300,000 kilometres on the engine. It's got bad headgaskets and valve cover gaskets and it burns oil. And it still runs and turns over instantly. It runs perfectly fine.

I had a 2000 dodge Dakota with a 4.7 magnum in it with 117,000 on it hit three trees sold. The truck ended up finding the truck. They pulled the motor and put it in a 2002 Dodge 1500 and it hasn’t missed a beat since. 2018

Well i beg to differ.!! I bought my 2003 1500 4.7 brand new. And its 20 years old with 250k miles. I swear my engine has been and still is running strong and only issues ive had is squeaking suspension and had to replace a drive shaft from towing heavy for many years. She’s now retired and used for casual rides to favorite fishing spots and occasional wkend camping trips. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY TRUCK. Got new Ford 5 years ago ago and ut has killed out twice. Bought a new Z71 and its doing ok so far. But NOTHING beats 2003 dodge 4.7 .!

Two ways to not "blow them up" don't over heat it and change the oil... interesting part is the one that don't peg their temp gauges and never change the oil (or run cheap oil) have 200-300k miles on the original engine without beating on them. Most of the ones that had the issue were in the Rams, some Dakotas because they over taxed the vehicle. where they were underpowered for that weight. My 2004 Dakota QC is on the original engine and Transmisson. 125k miles and 20 years. Yeah not big on miles but it has 20 years worth of heat cycles. Also don't run the piss out of them and put them away wet. Actually talked with a R&D mechanic for Dodge who had the Hemi swap workshop at MoParty (392 swapped her Dakota RT) and said even with the 5.7/6.1 Hemis (That ALSO drop valve seats like the 4.7 is claimed to do too via overheating) have to see north of 270 degrees for it to happen. Again, if you're towing up a hill with a 4.7 you are using the wrong vehicle for your task. Keep up on the Maintenace, don't abuse it and it'll thank you for it. Carfax all you want, but lets see what the temp gauge was reading (or actual temps) when the issues happen. But hey, least it doesn't launch spark plugs like rockets or drop chains guides (cough Ford triton engines)

@@seanbutler2291 Right like how people use a 1/2 ton to tow their boat and wonder why the bumper drags the ground and you get 6mpg towing. The 210-230hp 4.7 in a 5500+ lb FULL SIZE is dumb. If you bought a heavy 1/2 ton truck with a small V8 and go "well I'm going to tow a boat" YOU have no business owning a truck. Because you didn't do research. I get laughed at anyway, even though my bed carries air just as good as their $60k-90k+ pavement queen that's 4wd and never sees dirt. (Cough Raptor, TRX owners) My parents back in the 80s had an F100 Ranger, could barely tow a single axle horse trailer. Then with one horse in it, it was a laugh, because my dad had to always tighten the bands in the trans afterwards.. they traded it in for a F150 with the old 302, thats what you get for listening to the sales guy who lied saying, "Yeah it'll do that easy". Funny thing is I have more people criticize mine when I say its the 545rfe. Next words out of their mouths isnt "oh that 4.7 is crap..." it's "oh good luck with that trans." FYI there's people out there who beat the crap out of the 4.7 and have 250k miles and never had failures.

I have one in a 2003 Ram, it runs good and is fairly easy to work on. The negatives are poor fuel economy and not a ton of power.

I bought my 2013 Ram 1500 with 4.7. It has 68K miles original engine & trans. I am saving this video and will continue updates. I just drove across country hauling 5 thousand pound trailer through the mountains. Dont get me wrong im watching the engine like a hawk but running strong.

Hey man, your serpentine belt is routed wrong on that 4.7. Shouldn't run straight from the A/C compresser to the alternator. That is why the engine fails a lot of the time: I see SO many people routing that belt wrong. This spins the water pump backwards and leads to overheating...the main killer of the 4.7.

@@afastcuda1970 My dad had a 4.7 Grand Cherokee that ran very well until 340k, when we sold it. It ran well because we knew how to take care of it and how important it was to keep that maintenance up (and route the serpentine belt correctly 🙂). I have my own 4.7 Grand Cherokee now that is nearing 200k and runs better than any other vehicle in the driveway...yes, even the Toyota Camry with basically the same number of miles. It's all about knowing the weak points and taking steps to avoid those problems.

How funny the "mechanic" has a video on why these engines are junk because they overheat due to poor design, and as his example to show this he has an engine with the belt on wrong causing the water pump to malfunction. You can't make this stuff UP! FWIW my WJ has 260k miles on it.

Yeah I know, I had to laugh to myself when I saw that belt routed wrong. My Dad's 4.7 WJ had 337k miles when we sold it. Those 4.7s just won't die it you take care of the basic maintenance...and route the serpentine belt the right way 🤣. Congrats on the 260k milestone with your WJ. Keep it up! 👍👍

Watching this as I sit in my 02 ram 4.7 that has 205538 on the dash. Truck was owned by my grandpa before me and he bought it new. Never had a single issue with the truck besides obvious maintenance. Never failed me and it’s outlasted a bunch of my friends vehicles. Including my wife’s ford fusion. The truck is old faithful and it still sounds great while running true.

You have no idea what you are talking about. I've put over 200,000 miles on two different 4.7 Magnums. A 2001 and a 2003, both used to tow a 20ft fiberglass boat all over texas in 100 deg weather. They both ran great.

318000 origonal untoched 4.7 average fuel has been 21 highway 1 city its entire life. Oil changes every 5-6000 miles.

I have a 2004 with 4.7L. 182K miles. I bought it new. Doesn't burn oil. Only engine repairs are new water pump, thermostat and engine control module.

I love this engine. I have it in my 2011 Ram. Looking at this guy as a mechanic I would stay far away. Do all the work myself. Change the normal wear and tear stuff. Altanator, battery, starter just the norms. 134,000 miles and still runs beautiful.

It depends I change my oil at 3000 miles. I'm at 196000 miles never had the valve cover off. Does not even have oil leak. Original transmission change it gets the fluid changed every 30000. I will have to rebuild the supension. Enjoyed the content.

I still notice its always the people who have Rams with 4.7s that complain about them being crap. Maybe.. just a guess, the 5200lbs+ curb weight and then towing a boat could be the issue? lol 4.7 was originally in a 99 Jeep WJ. Dakota/Durangos got them next then lastly the Rams when they went to the newer front end for 2002/3?

My QC Dakota weighs about 4600 and even at that weight its quick, hates traffic for heat, because youre not moving, shocker, thats what happens in anything. Plus the engine family was started in before Y2K, before 9/11... dont know about you, but theres way more traffic with warmer summers, almost 25 year old cooling design? Adding salt to that wound lol

Well I got a 2002 ram 4.7 with 360,000+ miles on it and it still runs like a top. Only work I’ve had to do to the truck is replace the radiator and the front end suspension.

But, I have an 01 4 door 4x4 slt Dakota that is just sitting around. Right after I got it I ran into an 02 4.7 HO engine and bought it. I’ve torn it down had most of the machine work done by a local shop. I’m in the process of fitting the pistons and rings. I had the block bored.020. The crank is forged and I’m going back with a high top piston, new rings, aluminum heads are ported and polished. I was thinking of running the stock cams from the 2008 dodge ram 4.7. They have the ho cams as stock cams. There must be a way of getting some power out of 4.7? I’m balancing the rotating assembly and it’s proven to be a daunting task. What else can I do to help produce a little more horsepower? Should I increase the cams lift and duration? It’s not recommended to bore more than 20 thousandths. I can’t afford to put in a stroker kit. What’s left but to try some new things

I have a 2013 Ram 1500 with a 4.7 that I am the only owner. I just rolled it past 190,000 miles and other than a water pump, a battery and a heater core, i have never had any trouble with it. Still runs great, with no check engine light. I change the oil every 10k miles with synthetic. i have to add 1 qt at 5K.

You do the maintenance it'll keep running. You put the same amount of time effort and maintenance into a 5.9, itll run twice as long.

@@seanbutler2291 I know the 5.9 is reliable...but it's not that much more reliable than a well-maintained 4.7. The 4.7 easily can run 350k plus if the oil is just changed on time and kept at the right level and if the engine is never overheated. Also, the 5.9 uses way too much gasoline for it to even be practical to take "twice as long" as the 4.7. I don't even believe that's true, anyway. I would comfortably take a 4.7 to 400k. I doubt a 5.9 is going to be running at 800k but maybe.

Plus most people that now a days that you pay in shops to do simple work like oil changes even when dealing with dealerships want the big pay days for sub- part work

were they junkyard engines for $500 or short blocks from a decent remanufacture? Clay Millican took a Hemi from a junkyard that was from a cop car lasted 2 burnout a couple of street tuning pulls 3 dyno pulls before it went pop in his Dakota Hemi swap. He called up arrington performance and got himself a fresh long block

He probably rebuilt them himself. No vehicle has 4 engine swaps and still blows up. Probaly run it like a rotary. Calm that lead foot, and use amsoil signature series synthetic oil, mixed with lucas oil stabilizer and a good filter, use amsoil or lucas or royal purple for transfer case, differential, and transmission fluid. Full iridium tune up, k&n drop in air filter. Redline water wetter additive for heat, run some chevron techron additive with some good gas. The truck will last 250k-350k miles.

My grandfather’s 08’ 1500 has a 4.7 with tow package and it’s sitting at 162K miles with zero issues, but I know for a fact it’s been babied it’s whole life but he’s owned it for most of its life.

I’ve got 356,000 kms (222,000 miles)on my 4.7 v8 in a 2008 grand Cherokee and aside from steering rack, shocks, brakes and a tailgate strut I’ve just changed the oil and haven’t had any problems. The transmission is clunking and has been for 100,000kms and it’s starting to idle a bit labourer but those fixes are simple so when it breaks I’ll fix it and keep driving it until the wheels fall off.

2006 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Quad Cab with the 4.7L V8 at 140,000 miles. Owned since new and the only major work was the shift solenoid. Occasionally towed a 16 ft double axle trailer. It's been a good 18 years and I hope to get another 18 years out of her. 😁

I drive a 2006 Mitsubishi raider with the 4.7 Dodge 2wd auto with a little over 205,000 miles on it all terrain tires on the stock 16"rims and I get about 12 to 13 mpg in the city and about 16 to 17mpg on the highway and still running strong for what it is

I have a 2010 4.7 ram bought used at around 180k, couple of years back. I have had 2 issues: 1 the voltage regulator went out at 190K, but I just swapped it out for a self regulating one. And 2: the starter went out at 200K, but it was a super easy for me to replace. I am up to 250k now, and it seems to be pretty solid for me, but maybe I got lucky, or maybe the 2010 models had some of the issues fixed. I will admit the gas mileage is not great, but I live close to work. It may that I park inside a closed, dry, house garage, every night, and I change the full synthetic regularly idk....

My 2001 Durango 4.7L was an ex squad car and it had 144,000 miles when I bought it! When the transmission started giving me headaches it had 235,000 miles! Original engine and transmission! I do know the dealership I traded it at sent it to the junkyard because there wasn’t much good anymore. But I got a lot of use out of it in 5 years

The trick with this engine is Liqua Molly before every oil change for the sludge. Then Mobil 1 oil n filter. Also clean n cut open the oil pickup tube. New o ring. Thank me later!!

Ive had one with the 4.7 HO in a 2004 Grand Cherokee. I heard alot of conflicting things. But it ran great. Was pretty darn fast, dependable. I loved it. 200k plus miles before trade in on a brand new Grand Cherokee

This review is full of BS my Dodge Dakota 4.7 has 270,000 miles on it and still runs great after 20 years. I would invite any to come and try and prove mine isn't original. Still has original transmission as well only major driveline component thats been replaced is rear differential.

2006 Dodge Durango I'm going on 200000 now only thing I had to change was fuel injectors and coil packs and a lot of gas treatments over the years and unhooked my EGR valve so my engine stays clean without all the carbon from the EGR valve and just plug it back up when it's time to go to inspection and it also help save on gas

I bought a 1st year 2002 Ram 1500 with 4.7L and got 140k with motor. About 190K on the transmission. My mileage unloaded after 70K was consistently on the Hwy - 17/18 and in town 14/15. I pulled my tractor many times on trailer with no problems and it also had a 50lb higher towing capacity than the Hemi for the 02 models. I HATE the fact that finding the right cluster for these trucks is worse than chinese checkers but other than that it still rides better than my 2018 Silverado.

Mine has 356895 to date. Truck has had a trailer behind it its entire life. I do all of my own maintenance, and ive been using valvoline 10w30 high mileage since its first oil change. It has had a new water pump, power steering pump, clutch fan, thermostat, and multiple cam position sensors. Been great otherwise. 👍🏼

Have had two 2003 dakotas with the 4.7. Put 200,000 miles on the first one and 100,000 before I sold it because I didn’t need it anymore. Very smooth. Very reliable decent fuel economy with the OD. I suspect it’s more a factor of over stressing - too small for the job

Yeah cooling is the biggest issue. I got 288,000 miles on my 2012 4.7 and coolant issues before I fixed them “rammed” me hard.

I've got a 2004 Ram 4.7 with 270, 000 miles. Not one issue with it. Runs like a sewing machine! I love it. I also have a 2013 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi with 165,000 miles and not one issue with it either.

I have a 2007 Dodge Dakota 318ci Magnum Flex Fuel 290000 Klm or 180000 Miles It runs great.I live off.Grit has no red line on the tack at 7000 Rpm. I've used this truck and beat on it in the Bush.Getting firewood anything, you can throw at it.I still have the same motor and it runs just fine

I like the 3.8 v6 I've got three 01 mustangs the one with 5 speed one I turned into a farm toy lol I put mud tires on it and raise hell in the mud it actually gets around pretty good after I raised it5 inches. Reason I ask is I am thinking about adding a turbo kit in my Convertible. Feedback would be appreciated

I had a 02 Jeep GC with the 4.7. Put 80k on it, no engine issues. I also changed the oil around 3k miles and used synthetic. I pulled a very large heavy trailer a month after I purchased it and beat it to within an inch of it's life. No overheat, just spent 200 miles between 4 and 5k rpm!. My only gripe was that it was never "glass smooth". At idle it always had a little shake. Keep in mind the 4.7 was created as a replacement for the 318, not for the 360. The 360 replacement was the Hemi. It was created before Chrysler was purchased by Daimler Benz, and I am sure DCX had some say into making changes. Chrysler and Chevy engines were always regarded as excellent, and I believe the DCX debacle ruined Chrysler. Although it does have long timing chains that wear, they are not much different than other ohc engines. The 4.7 was a stop gap measure after the 318 and before the Pentastar.

Maybe they suck in the Rams. And your opener is flat out wrong. Ive owned multiple 4.7s that have gone over 200k. On the same engine. Car fax rofl, first one was owned since new. Had the snot beat out of it. Same with the next 3.

My 08 ram 1500 quad cab 4x4 with the Getrag manual 6 speed and 4.7l has around 160,000 miles and is still going strong. The Hemi trucks never came out with 600 something HP I'm not saying you couldn't build it to get upwards of 600HP. I have only replaced the oil sending unit and gave her a tune up, which takes 2 different spark plugs, changed the oil every 3500 miles and I used synthetic every time. changed the brake pads and I keep my throttle blade clean. Stuff like that.

Sold my 06 ram with 241k miles, original engine, never did anything internal, towards the end i switched to 10w40 and a quart of lucas to help quiet the lifters and timing chain and to keep the oil pressure warning from chiming everytime i came to a stop lol

Good video! I somewhat recently bought an 03 dakota with the 4.7, it's got 275,000 km's and is going strong. Yes it has the lifter tick on start up but it goes away within a minute. Not good gas mileage especially after a lift and 33's, but for $1900cad it's worth every penny lol Still the original engine, idk if I just got one of the few decent ones but you never hear about all the ones that are actually not bad. I also knew what I was getting myself into, when the day comes that the engine does die I'll either swap in an LS or just buy another dakota for ~$2k and have my old one as a parts rig. For a work truck ya 100% not a dependable platform, that's why I have my cummins lol

4.7l's break exhaust manifold bolts. If the ticking stops after it warms up then that's your problem.

My 4.7 03 ticks before and after it was rebuilt at like 80k. Original owner must've abused it before he passed to us because we've never had a issue w her after that. Pulling trailers and going fishing w her but she just keeps ticking away 220k miles💪 think it goes away after it warms up too could it really just be exaust manifold?

“If you were a genius you would have bought a tundra.” Okay I don’t have the million dollars people are asking for their worn out completely screwed truck these days. Plus, the new 3.4L Toyota calls a “3.5L iFoRcE mAx 😤💪👊” twin turbo V6 is now the only engine you can get in a Tundra. Pick between a hybrid or just twin turbo. You pick. I’m sticking with my Dodge Dakota because it’s lasted 3 years, and it has never given me problems 130,000 mi later. I wanted a V8 truck that I could use from time to time to tow, get me down highways comfortably, was decent on fuel, fun to drive, easy to work on, and most importantly reliable. The Dakota fit the bill well, and I must say upgrading the parts has been stupendously easy unlike my father who has a Tundra. My truck costs 1/10th to run in comparison, and I’m harder than him on vehicles. And oh, I do acknowledge that the valve seats drop on these motors if you overheat them…not yet for me. My friend overheated it (to boiling, he called yet) and the valve seat never dropped in the truck. Runs just fine 3 years later!

2006 Dodge ram .230,000 miles i changed a radiator after it got hit by a rock . So I changed the water pump . All I have ever done is put new spark plugs in it and keep oil changed!

My mom gave me her 2003 dakota quad 4.7L 4x4 105k miles. I never drove it much but couple times towing , and would overheat on mountain passes. Apparently the lifters, piston rings, head gaskets, timing chains are notorious in this engine. I plan on keeping it, babying as much as can, wont tow but light loads so wont over heat. And if engine blows do a hemi swap. If you plan on buying one , don't the only engines good this era were the big magnum 5 .9L, hemi 5.7l. And the seats are horrible uncomfortable, the suspension is stiffer than a rock. If you want a cheap reliable used truck get a chevy/gmc 1999-2006. My 2005 gmc 2500 6.0L kicks the dodge 4.7l in everything - comfort, reliability, cheap to fix, cheap to buy, and even better mpg.

But the explain I’ve seen in person, step dads 04 1500 SLT 4.7, never changed the oil, did burn outs, put 33s on it and the only time I drove it I could barely make it up a small hill😂😂don’t understand why it didn’t blow up! I currently have a 09 2500 hemi (my f150 got totaled) and it was under 10k, new engine with a warranty, drives great, I live in the north so I use 4wd ALOT, thinking about down grading but a 3 year warranty on a engine and no loan is amazing lol

So true, had a 02 1500. I didn't do any heavy hauling just an everyday driver, oil changes every 3k miles full synthetic oil and it constantly had cooling issues. After 7 yrs of headaches, 4 radiators 3 water pumps, 3 upper and 2 lower radiator hoses and the 2 back freeze plugs blowing out it finally blew. The 4.7 is an absolute dog shit of an engine.

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 4 wheel drive with original 4.7 and it is strong! 225,000 miles. Same blue color as you are showing. Bought it to replace the stupid Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited that had to get 2 clutch replacements and then blew up at less than 150,000 miles. We keep our vehicles maintained as they are supposed to be. We have a 5.7 engine in a Dodge Ram 2500 2014 and we have issues with ECU and sensors on it.
