Golden tongs :) I like your unique "simple" design. Best tongs are those that works, so true... -> Blacksmithing is 10% hammering and 90% finding the right tongs :)

Torbjörn Åhman I have spent the past two years advising new smiths to forget about anvil obsession and forge mania when they begin acquiring equipment. You have shown how easy it is to make a cheap forge that works. Any chunk of steel can serve as an anvil. However, there is NO replacement or alternative to a good pair of tongs. It’s a tough message for some to hear. Tongs aren’t as sexy as anvils or forges to new smiths. Once you have done it a while, good tongs inspire tears of joy.

Lou, Very well said. While I don't discount how important a proper anvil is (for those who are beyond being beginners), if you can't hold hot steel well you can't hit it well. Thanks for your support. Glen

I really like the look of these tongs, particularly the way the handles are aligned over each other. Makes for a neat tidy appearance. Still not sure what the purpose of the indents you make on one or sometimes both sides of the pivot area?
@gstongs
@gstongs 2 жыл бұрын
The indents aren't completely necessary but they help outline the pivot area and make it much easier to offset the jaws and pivot to size the tongs for whatever size stock they will hold. Rather than indents, most people will offset front and back of the pivot area on the anvil face but the idea is the same. Thanks for watching.

NIIIIICE! The true sign of a Master......consistency.......(at least what I have been told)........and handsome tooling too! Each time I make them....they all have their own Character....(cough cough)......flaws.... :)....but mine work for something.....paperweights on the bench, etc......if nothing else...... as a benchmark to get better.......I occasionally watch ferrier videos and the good ones amaze me with forming nuances on the horse shoes for different purposes....done so easily.....
@gstongs
@gstongs 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, consistency, especially with tongs, is the key. And the old adage that practice makes perfect really applies. A lot of my customers are capable of making good tongs but it's just not their thing. Others, who are advanced and have more overall blacksmithing skill than me just find tong making bewildering. Anyway, thanks.

Well done,maestro,great work. Greetings from Greece. What kind of iron did you use? (SKD61 or SKD11 or .... ) How many millimeters are the irons for the tong? And what kind of iron do you use for anvil?( SKD61 or SKD11 or .... )
@gstongs
@gstongs 5 жыл бұрын
Nikos, Glad you like this. The tongs are made for 1018 mild steel and the lengthen the blanks is 260mm (I like shorter tongs). My block style anvils are made form 4145 steel. The only tool in this video that is SKD-61 is the round punch. Thanks for watching. Glen

Love your tong videos! I believe you have the most unique and recognizable style of forging, Did you feel you needed a more positive feel on the rein end than the way you did it before? Thanks Glen! Jerry
@gstongs
@gstongs 5 жыл бұрын
Jerry, You make a good point. I really do like tongs to have "a positive feel". That is, I like them to have resistance on the handles when I grip my stock. As for making changes, I'm always experimenting with my tongs. Sometimes it's for improving, sometimes it's just to keep things interesting. And for me, when in doubt make a tong video! Thanks. Glen
