Oh, it's our role to thank you, for the knowledge and fun you share with us. I wondered, why did you use a rectangular punch in the middle of the punched hole process ?

Gabriel, That's a good question. That slender slot style punch helps me to make the hole more quickly, especially when my round punch is a bit dull and needs to be dressed. I will modify that punch some and make it a small slitter and so try to open the hole but remove the least amount of material possible. Thanks. Glen

Hi, I normally use 1018 mild steel, 14mm diameter, for my tongs. I prefer mild steel tongs since I often quench my tongs and higher carbon stuff might crack over time. Thanks for watching. Glen

Are all your tongs CR 1018? Did I miss why in another video?

Yes, I use cold rolled 1018 for all my tongs and that definitely plays a part in contributing to their final look. I'm going to leave those marks for now. Eventually, I may grind them off but to be honest, they barely leave any marks and over time continued use of the anvil will wear them smooth. I'm glad you continue to watch... Thanks. Glen

Noah, Yes, I use 1018 cold rolled for all my tongs now. Firstly, it's a more consistent material than hot rolled. Secondly, it's easier to forge than higher carbon steel. And lastly, it won't crack with frequent cooling (I often quench my tongs when the jaws get hot) like medium carbon or other alloy steel might. Thanks for watching.

Lufe, I use 1018 mild steel for my tongs. Just easier to work than higher carbon steel and much less susceptible to cracking from frequent quenching (I always cool my tongs). Thanks for watching. Glen

Kido, The saw marks are not deep. They mark the work slightly and I may eventually grind them off. But they will also smooth out with frequent use. It's very unlikely this steel (4145) will chip. The more likely thing is it will dent if struck with a hard enough hammer. Thanks.

Michael Foye I hear what you are saying, but he also designed the anvils he uses in the videos and they are a brilliant design. As a blacksmith, I tend to assume that a tool designer or engineer would not be able to understand what a blacksmith needs. Plus, we just enjoy making our own tools. It’s what separates us from most other crafts.

Adem, This is a very good question. For a few reasons, I like my tongs to be short and I know this doesn't suit everyone, especially those who use larger gas forges. I never have a problem with my hands getting burned from the stock I'm working but it can sometimes be difficult to get smaller pieces in and out of the forge with such short tongs. So, I have a longer, pick-up style tong that I use to get things in and out to where I can easily grasp with my short, forging tongs. In general, I just find this short style easier to manipulate which improves my productivity. Thanks. Glen
