GTV6 Project Update

This provide an update on a project that I started a couple of years ago, to return a rather bedraggled 1981 Alfa Romeo GTV6 to the road, somewhat modified to make it a bit more reliable and practical for occasional driving, and the odd track day with the local Alfa club. It is rebuilt as an homage to the 200 GTV6 cars that Alfa Romeo South Africa built in the 1980's to race in the South African Touring Car Championship.

Beautiful car. The Busso has the best V6 sound, nothing compares to it. Actually is my favorite engine sound, the gtv6 is my favorite Alfa Romeo and my favorite car, ever

Nice color! I bought my 86 spider in '14, and I still wish that I had picked up a GTV6 here in Oregon. The prices were do-able back then, but not any longer! For me, anyway. I have to say that your engine bay is the cleanest I've seen; good idea to paint the valve covers and intake. Almost all that I've seen look filthy, even if the body and interior are steller. On that engine noise at idle, it's really familiar. I started using Liqui Moly MoS2 anti friction additive a few months ago, and it's really improved the start up noises in both of my Jeeps. My 98 4.0L jeep sounded just like yours and it seems to have quieted right down.

Nice car you have there. Can you tell me the manufacturer of the headlights? I also want to install Led headlights in my Gtv.

Thanks, and yes, it could be. I bought this engine in 1998 or so, in a crashed Milano Verde. The engine sounded really smooth. I removed the engine and before installing in my GTV6, I had the heads ported and polished by Sperry Valve Works (then the LA Alfa V6 experts), installed stock 164 S cams. The car memorably made this same ticking/tapping noise when cold, upon reassembly. Its sounded just like this for 25 years, over 100k miles, and dozens of track days. Alfa bottom ends are really stout which is why I suspected that the head job was the cause. In fact I have observed that one of the camshafts seems not to be bathed in oil upon startup, as if it drained down to the sump. I guess there has never been much reason to investigate further. I'll probably switch to forged pistons which will give me the opportunity to rebuild the block :)
