I saw him live in Amsterdam in 75 or 76, and he was by far the most charismatic artist I have ever seen. His entire personality washed over the audience like a wave. To this day it is the greatest concert I have ever been to.

you must be joking. If you call yourself a "reggae guitarist", then surely you need to be honest and call out the truth. He's not playing any of it the way it should be. That's the problem: Too many claiming to be "reggae" musicians, let stuff like this go in the name of pacivity. Reggae has a standard like any other music and deserves excellence as well.

From The Way Bob Skanked, To The Way Held His Hand Out, Then Adjusted The Mic. The Beat Indeed Tells A Story, So Compelling, That One’s Soul Felt Empowered. I’ve watched this concert hundreds of times. I still get goosebumps when I watch Bob’s performance. Absolutely on another level. You describing the video is the way I’ve done it lots of times with family and friends. Impossible not to stop and share in the magic that Bob is doing. This is Rasta!

There are very few songs and fewer artists that evoke such an emotional response in me than Bob Marley and War! This song takes me back to my youth and I'm flooded with memories of being overwhelmed by his message and the devout following that ensued. We had parties totally dedicated to the One 'N' Only Bob Marley and we knew all the words, singing and dancing through the night! What a special era that was!!!

With fine ear you could hear exactly what made Bob famous ... yes, the music, the message, BUT to “non English Natives “ Bob’s voice itself is an instrument that fits perfectly with his music. Growing up in a non English speaking country, Bob’s lyrics didn’t need translation, we just heard another instrument taking us in a dimension that touched all 6, 7, or even 9 senses ... thanks Michael, you are the first I’ve seen online doing such detailed explanation of the Bob Marley Experience: Marvelous Work !

One of Bob Marley'slong time friend and photographer once said that "Bob was physically small in stature but mentally, spirituality, philosophically and ideologically he was a GIANT. He said when Bob enters a room his aura immediately fills the room. It was like an invisible ball of intense illumination. It is that light which pulls us all towards him today. What I love about videos like this.....is that I remember a time when reggae music was often derided in the west as toy music, or gimmick music, played by people who had no real musical skill. Of course people like me knew better. Nowadays, many musicians now give the music the credit it deserves. Part of being a good musician is to learn, study, and appreciate other musical styles, it enriches your craft and ultimately makes you better at what you do.

I fell in love with uncle Bob's music when I was just a kid around 10 years of age. I couldn't read or write music or know the music terminologies, but I knew then exactly what you're talking about now. How every instrument, if listened to individually, told a story, which enhanced the whole story and message. And when peiced together, actually created an image in the mind that accompanied the message or meaning of the lyrics, where the overall sound and feel of the song, suited the words and the meaning. And the icing on the cake was his perfect voice, sung from the heart with full intent and meaning. At the age of 10 I couldn't find any other musician that could do all that. Every song was equally and carefully constructed. He's the only artist I can truly say doesn't have a bad song that I cannot listen to. Even to this day there is probably only a handful of musicians that manages to do that. Most only have 1 or the other, not the full package.

Ha! I posted the album version of this with lyrics 3 days ago. I'm just 2 minutes into your intro, and you nailed it. I was privileged to see him twice, once in Philly and a few years later in Seattle: Marley was a living prophet and he brought every soul into transcendent communion. We surely miss him this week. You're a star man! You couldn't have picked a better song to dissect at this pivotal moment. The lyrics are from a section of a speech Haile Selassie made on 4 Oct 1963 to the United Nations General Assembly. The 2 key points were on "disarmament" and "establishment of true equality among men". There is a long preamble but the penultimate paragraph before he launches into "Until the philopsophy...." is the following: "In the United States of America, the administration of President Kennedy is leading a vigorous attack to eradicate the remaining vestige of racial discrimination from this country. We know that this conflict will be won and that right will triumph. In this time of trial, these efforts should be encouraged and assisted, and we should lend our sympathy and support to the American Government today." 57 years later.... the KKK has taken over the White House. Marley also said "if you know your history, then you would know where you coming from".

Absolutely brilliant review! I was 17 when this song came out and all my friends and I devoured the Rastaman Vibration album, learning all the words off by hard. For almost a year, we listened almost exclusively to Bob! (It was also the height of the Anti-Apartheid movement).

HE IS THE REASON WHY I TRY AND PLAY GUITAR. The WAY you broke this performance down made me smile bruh, you understand completely what bob is doing... i love the way the melody of the line "everywhere is war" resolves the tension from the repeated melody that directly precedes it. symbolically it tells us that these things can only result in war.

Great job Brother reminds me of my dad rehearsals when I was a young one. Bless Brotha Nesta my favorite guitarist his up stroke is Dopest the ole skee vibe u caught it Bob played as we say play from the down stroke kinda backward when taught guitar.When I started learning to writing and saw it lines up in studio on the boards I was trained as as a engineer it hit me when I seen it line up lyrically and musically. Almost passed out, my ear already trained from inside the womb from family of singers and musicians but to learn a proper way to arrange music.My dad brought albums during Army Tours Overseas in 70's so he exposed me to Bob Marley I was born in 78 so I now know why I love Him so much. Ur vibe reminds me of one of my Uncles Guitarist Buddy Cash

I wonder if america already had enough challenge accepting black music from " home" hip hop, rap, blues, jazz, which gives black americans all the quality they need & white citizens enough to be challenged by. I wonder if jamaican reggae seemed too closely tied to cannabis use & the language of " I and I" both odd & perplexing. Just guessing, not saying that I know. Reggae music is great though. Appreciate it or if you don't you have missed a major cultural force.

Yah, I just subscribed right now. I do hear some of the magic of Marley but really I had just a peek before this. " I'm tellin'ya this is Genius stuff"! Ok now as a student, I'm hooked in. But I was already as you showed how well you translate along, using your guitar to get within this music. Also I like the way you took your own conventional 6 string electric that so many people have AND showed how you can do dedicated bass lines on it which even alone are very pleasing.

among the enormous amount of incredible lyrics bob marley wrote war it's simply the transcription of a speech that haile selassie took in 1963. he only added war. R.N.M a true inspired person. he changed my life when i was young

Now i am not a religious man, but i've always seen Bob Marley as a Prophet in modern times, he was working at a higher level than most people do. And his music still carries his message today, as strongly as it ever has and for ever will. So yeah, i can see that preacher and his following analogy for sure, he had a big influence on me growing up, viewing the world around me. Thanks for the upload Michael :)

I feel like we're always on the same wavelength dude. I was literally just listening to the Playing for Change version of this the same day you posted this video. I was listening to Bob Marley all day thinking how relevant his message would be in light of current issues and how important it is to use the music as a healing force to incite positive change. I just discovered your channel from your Goose and Billy Strings videos super recently too. The synchronicities of the universe blow my mind sometimes. Thank you.

Yup. It was part of his speech to the League of Nations in 1936 urging them not to allow Italy to occupy Ethiopia.

As a teenager angry at the injustices in the world loved Marley. He was one of a kind. Sadly I'm in my late 40's and had forgot the anger that used to burn inside me. Thank you for relighting that flame. Bob Marley is and will always be a religious experience. If you are the religious type then it is like he is channelling the word of God to us all. We all know what is right and wrong, good and bad, it is up to us to choose the path.

Emperor Haile Selassie gave the "War" speech on October 4, 1963, calling for world peace at the 1963 U.N. General Assembly in New York City. Bob then took and made it into this immortal piece of musical genius.

Bob Marley is the greatest man ever to live, and best musician to ever write music, he is the earth talking to its people as a conduit. This video was great all i have ever wanted was to be able to understand what it was that made the music what it is, always a wall i hit never got there but ive always wanted to understand it and play it. Thanks for this video so well done wish you were my guitar teacher you seem to understand what i want to learn and how it works. You got my sub hope you do more i would love to see The sun is shining, misty morning, kaya, or midnight ravers broken down, or one of my favorites from the babylon by bus tour kinky reggae party... babylon by bus is my favorite of all his live performances.
