Plays bass for one of the most iconic songs of the 20th century. Can’t remember doing it… Legend.

Did this really just happen? There I was, randomly listening to Like a Prayer thinking: _"Wow. This actually has super cool bass parts. Let me see if KZfaq has some useful info on how to play them... Hmm, what about this dude?"_ He rambles for a few minutes, I almost get bored, but then he off-handedly mentions Robert Palmer and Pink Floyd and it's daunting on me: _"Hold on, is this the original session bassist?!"_ He soon confirms my suspicion, then not only plays the fun bit, but also explains his licks and basically tells you how to get the sound. As much sh*t there is on KZfaq these days, sometimes it's just amazing. 😃 This could not have been more precisely what I was looking for. Thanks for doing this, Guy! Over the past years I've come to realize that much of the music I love today would not be half of what it is without the incredibly talented session players who deserve way more credit. It's cool that they finally get some more exposure on KZfaq.

Didn't know who this guy is. Then he started playing and I realized I know him most of my life. What a legend.

Knowing that he's sitting in (most likely) an empty room talking to his iphone, this guy is an amazing story teller...natural, free flowing delivery...and the wit only helps.

Guy love your playing over the years. Floyd, Jackson Madonna, Palmer etc. Yes I read your book. I actually use Like a Prayer (and other Madonna songs you played on) as an example for my daughters of normal/nice people can do amazing things. Keep doing what you do.

I just wanna say, your bass style compliments the PULSE concert beyond my comprehension. Before watching the PULSE re mastered videos, I could not have imagined those tracks to have gotten better, yet they did. your bass style fits with Floyd like a key unlocks a door.

That little fill is a perfect example of why I fell in love with bass playing. Peak bass playing is when you get someone like Guy who can hold a groove but then just 'feels' where there's a place in the song for a little fill like this. Beautiful.

I listened a gazillion times to this song (one of my absolute favourites) since I was a boy. It was always clear to me that it lives by the base, which I enjoy so much. I was quite sure that no one could have played this live on an instrument and that it was programmed on a sampler - so wrong! The beefy sound, the rhythm that makes my feet wanna dance, that harmony and melody... Thank you for contributing this wondorful part to this song, and for doing a video showing (that it is real :-) ) and how it is done!

Thank you Guy. When I was growing up (born in '68), there were certain songs that stood out to me, like this one, like Talk Talk's It's My Life. I didn't know why until I took up playing the bass in my 40s. NOW I know why I loved those songs.

Like a Prayer is truly one of the great pop songs. Timeless due to the sort of brilliant musicianship and talent on display here. This baseline just flows so effortlessly. That crescendo when it goes into back into major key is just 👌

I would follow this blog just for sense of humour alone. I would study this just for the excellent bass playing and guides to many of the songs of my life. I would follow this just for the great anecdotes. All three combined and more to make a truly great experience. Legendary. Thanks for your candour, your humility and generosity. 10/10

That was in late 90's. Me ,my parent's Opel Kadett, and Madonna's "Like a Prayer" in cassete player. Played again and again. I loved that bass line! Until today, i didn't know that Guy played it! I'm totally shocked. Best wishes!

What a musician!!! Loved Guy's work since I saw him doing the Floyd Stuff in the late 80's. I met him, very briefly, in Liverpool (Marsh Lane) sometime around 1988-9 and he was just lovely, professional and full of great tips for being a musician.

This was wonderful and inspiring, Guy - thank you! Plus I adore the live video of you on the old Tube music show playing 'Hey Little Girl' with Icehouse- I used to listen it to every morning before work started in order to pep me up for the day. That was back when going to work was a thing.

I remember half listening to "like a prayer" on the radio one day and then suddenly having the realization that the band were absolutely on fire. Great work Guy.

I listened to this song all the time when it came out and always thought that bass was done on a synth,a DX7 or Jupiter 8. I only discovered this video recently and was blown away to see Guy does it on bass. Ive been a musician for 43 years (Keyboards and Synths),been in many bands during the 80s with some brilliant bassists,the bass in this is the best ive heard and as musician im even more blown away by this.

Guy, this is truly wonderful to see. When I hear a big/famous musician say, 'Yeah I can't read music', it's one of the most satisfying things a musician could perhaps hear. This is not me saying being able to read is a bad thing. It is a positive thing. But a lot of people can read and they never take it anywhere. They learn an instrument when they are young and they get sick of it by the time they get out of their teens and just give up. For me that says, they didn't have the basic drive and fire to have what it actually takes to take music on and were just doing it because they felt they had to to please parents and that it was 'academically acceptable'. This is my gripe with reading music. I've been a musician for over 20 years now but I've learnt there's a lot more to it. You've got to have something else to drag you along and keep you within the musician world. I think I've always felt a sense of arrogance with musicians who can read and because you can't, they do look down on you. I studied music at uni and it was there, even some of the tutors had it. But I can guarantee, that out of all those people I went to uni with, I am one of the few still doing music stuff. That's the difference. It's a fun journey to discover! Those bass fills man! Just out of curiosity but what time signature is Oh Father played in Guy? It seems confusing and deceiving as the chorus seems to be differentfrom the verses?

I have to admit that I never realized that it's been you on Like A Prayer and Earth Song. Not because of your playing or sound, that IS your unique style of course, but because I never "matched" the idea because of the differences in genres ... and artists. and that it even though I've always been actively listening to these bass lines. Feels like a crazy aha moment now.
