The cave church, also known as the Saint Simon Monastery, is a church that can fit 20,000 people and was dug into Mokattam Mountain by the Coptic Christian community of Manshayit Naser (AKA Garbage City). Getting up there is a struggle with the awful smell but once you up there its amazing. I can imagine its like heaven to the people of Garbage City

Yeah you can smell Garbage City before you actually get there, but after awhile it isn't so bad. Actually it wasn't my first time in Garbage City, I walked through there before and did some filming, made a video about.

I was there today. It was very impressive. Hot as heck today but the church was pretty cool. One thing to note. I couldn't get an Uber back and decided to walk down to the main road. I guickly got lost and roamed the streets of Garbage City before stumbling into another church were they arranged a tuktuk to take me to a taxi stand Not sure what the solution is. Like you I felt sorry for the Uber driver taking me there. The roads are a mess. I should have paid him to wait. So, if you are going I would suggest onward transportation. Nice video Giselle!

Thanks Rosie! I believe in the law of attraction and hope for the best (while expecting anything) . It really is impressive! The Coptic Christians really went all out for this place, which says a lot when you see where they live and work.

Hola Gisselle, thank you so much for this video. As always very interesting..... I think I am going to visit this Cave....I did not last year. Even the garbage city is not in my plan, but probably I just stop by for a quick visit... I have seen many videos from people filming in that place. Have a good day.

@@Gventures I know..... last year I went to a few very poor neighborhoods in Cairo... wow... I never expected to see places like that in my entire life....but it was an experience to appreciate what we have..... it does not matter if you are rich or not.

Great video, Certainly on my list of places to visit when i get to Egypt.. I did hear that the garbage city is a bit dodgy for tourists so i guess i wont be walking through. I imagine it is smelling a bit ripe anyway!

I've heard people say it's dodgy but honestly I've never had any bad experiences, people are very friendly there. It does smell though, of course. I am pretty sure there is only one way into the Cave Church, and that is through Garbage City. But you could probably avoid walking through the city itself if you got dropped off by a taxi or something.

The intro soundtrack reminded me of the 2001 space odyssey (black monolith scene). It's cool when you put ominous suspensful music. Also, is there traditional clothing attire women wear in egypt and if so would you consider wearing it? Like the head covering or whole body covering attire? (Then maybe you can see how you are treated when they can't tell you're a foreigner) On a side note...did you tell a random stranger in a sketchy alley at a place called Garbage City to "relax"?

Thanks man! I enjoy the editing process, it's fun to find music that fits a scene. If a little difficult at times to find music that is copyright free😅 Yes the traditional Egyptian clothing is galabeya. Both men and women wear it, they differ slightly. I haven't worn a hijab or niqab/burqa. I have thought about wearing one some days when I just want to be incognito and draw less attention to myself, but nah. Even if I did wear one, the way I stomp around and wearing my backpack would probably still be obvious that I'm a foreigner. But it would draw less attention to me, I'm sure. It's hot in Egypt. 🤣Yeah, he was shouting. He needed to relax😅

A good way to explore Egypt is to find the small travel agencies. The small travel agencies are basically charter bus operators who branched out and started organizing their own small trips. You book the trip with them directly and the prices are very affordable and they take you to the destination and back without the need for Uber or Taxi..etc.

@@Gventures I know you're not talking sh*t... I'm not sarcastic either.... I've watched quite a few of your videos and they look very genuine... I actually strongly admire your bravery and sense of adventure.... I grew up in Egypt until age 26, my wife is also Egyptian American who lived there until age 12.... When I go there I'm visually and culturally indistinguishable from the locals. The same can't be told about my kids though.... I can tell you that my wife would never be able to do what you do, despite her, supposed, advantage in language and culture immersion.... I could do more than her but I probably would pick the easy way out most of the time 🫢🤫😊☺️

I am very genuine and take pride in that, so thank you 🙏 Ah, yeah kids born or growing up abroad is a different story to someone who spent a good portion of their life (especially adult life) in the country. My father is from Argentina, mother American. I was born in the US and am an American, although I have Argentine blood and heritage, I did not grow up in Argentina. I don't identify with the culture in the same way as an Argentine, and although I can speak some Spanish, I am not fluent. Heheh, my style of travel and what I enjoy is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. I enjoy a challenge, raw experiences, and have a thirst for adventure. Some would call it crazy, dirty, and uncomfortable, which is true in some aspects I suppose, and it just means it's not for them. But I like what I like, they like what they like, and that's all good, differences are good. Thanks so much again 🙏

Lol, yeah it does kind of look like some mega evangelical church in the US or something, doesn't it? But the people that built this are very poor in live in slums right outside of the church, so no money to build anything fancy. They certainly did a magnificent job of digging into this cave to have a place to worship though!

Pertti Ruotsalainen The cave that was converted into the church is from the pharaonic time I have been told. I have no information about what people had digged that cave hundreds of (maybe more) years ago . At the end of last century in 1992-94 I was there as a representative of Finnish Christian organization PATMOS. To make our part in helping work for those poor garbage collecting people. Good hearted people from different parts of the globe definitely gave a very big contribution for that project. I was able to witness the start of that huge Moqattam cave church construction while staying there in Cairo in 1992-1994. The ancient cave was existing already but partially was fllled with dust and rocks. Including huge stones inside. What an excellent work the Moqattam people made by first emptying the cave from stones and dust! And converting the cave into an excellent and beautiful cave church! It was like a miracle of our days! Father Samaan and his hardworking select groups achieved an amazing and excellent result. Moqattam is worth visiting!
