Wow Mark! Great review! That Halder is SWEET! I think that's one of the best performers yet! What a beauty to look at too! Awesome!

Thanks, I was very excited about this ever since unboxing it. Today, the utility company cut an elm tree where I work, so I'm going to gather the rounds and use the Halder to split it. I may do another maul shootout video. Or... maul vs sledge&wedge.

Another great review. I looks like you got this Halder about two weeks after you posted your "best maul" shootout video. Seems like you need a Round 2. The top two contenders from that video up against this Halder and...maybe the Fiskers IsoCore 8 pounder and/or the Husquvarna splitting maul. And if you're taking suggestions, I'd be interested in the Husqvarna S2800 large wood splitting axe in general.

Thanks, I'd like to make another video and include some of those mauls. I've always wanted to get a Gransfors Bruk. I'll see what I can do this fall to put another video together.

Hi, very interesting video, very interesting work, and very itneresting channel of yours!! One quick question: which is better Halder or Ochsenkopf? Thanks.
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
That's a tough question to answer because it depends on many factors. It depends on the type of wood you're splitting, the length of the wood, the temperature you're splitting in, and how long it's been sitting cut into rounds. One of my toughest pieces of wood that a hydraulic splitter wouldn't split ended up getting getting split by the Halder Twisted Splitting Wedge, which is one of my favorites for that method of splitting. I really like the Ochsenkopf Big Ox Maul too. Halder makes a great Simpex Soft Face Mallet, which I use all the time in my shop.

@@MarkThomasBuilder How do you like the Halder vs. the Helko Vario splitter from your other review? Pounding wedges is a big advantage for the Halder it seems Cheers
@michaelkearney5562

The disadvantage of the tyre is that the handle of the maul will regularly come in contact with it. Long term, that is bad for the handle. The maul itself appears to be a particularly good splitter. Thumbs up!

Thanks! Maybe I should go with a tire that's not as wide?

How will it do on live oak? I find it very hard to split without a me using a wedge
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder 5 жыл бұрын
The maul does a great job by itself. If I have a big round to do the initial split on, I use this along with the Halder Splitting Wedge. I've split things with that wedge that are nearly impossible!

@@MarkThomasBuilder Will you do another maul shootout including the Simplex?
@MarkThomasBuilder

@@LabiaLicker That's a good question. If I get a chance for some firewood to split this winter, I will pick up the Gransfors Bruks maul and do another shootout. Right now I just have a big trailer full of thick limbs to cut and split with a smaller axe.

markthomasbuilder yes. Back when root beer was made from natural stuff, the flavor came from sassafras roots. I love cutting it because it smells similar to root beer but a lot stronger. Great video
