As an added layer of safety you can mention that whether it's 110 or 220 that the line is protected with the proper size circuit breaker. Also I like to add a GFCI circuit breaker to my pool pump feed. Just another layer of protection.

How do I wire a pentair variable speed pump to a old timer that has 3 red wires a ground? Thanks
@4woodberg

Thanks Mark for the great video! I've got a 220V pump with electrical coming underground to the "pump house". It's 3 wires coming in, so two hots (red/black) and a ground (hopefully - this is a white). Is there a way to tie into this supply for a new 110V receptacle? I understood from your video that there are two 110V supplies to choose from, but I get lost a bit when thinking about tying in because of the lack of a neutral coming in. Appreciate any help!
@HallmarkPoolSupplies
@HallmarkPoolSupplies 11 ай бұрын
I would recommend that you test the supply line with a volt meter, this way you will know what you have. Usually green is ground and neutral is white, if you are trying to go 110V you will need a neutral. If you are not sure on the hook up you can always contact an electrician. Thanks for watching.

Hi Mark, my issue goes a little bit deeper. On the back of the white plate where you switch from 115 to 230, there are two female molex type pin connectors; one is brown and the other is black. That whole part got fried because of a poor installation and water constantly getting into that section, until it started a small electrical fire. Then it kicked the breaker and extinguished. Anyway, I'm replacing that white base plate and don't know which color goes where on the receiving male pins. Any help is appreciated.
@HallmarkPoolSupplies
@HallmarkPoolSupplies Жыл бұрын
Different motor brands use different plates and colors. In this situation because of what has happened, just to be safe, I would take your motor to a motor repair shop were they can verify the wiring on the plate.

@HallmarkPoolSupplies
@HallmarkPoolSupplies Жыл бұрын
It depends if you have 110V or 220V, you need to confirm the voltage on each wire before doing so. If you are 220V, you need two hot wires and a ground. If you are 110V, you need one hot wire, a neutral and a ground. Thanks for watching.

Do I need more back pressure or is this happening because of the lack of water supply or possibly both? Thanks in advance !!

Most motors can be converted from 110v to 220v, However when you wire your motor it has to be wired in accordance to the feed coming in. If you don’t know if you are high voltage or low voltage, then you can use a volt meter. If you want to change the feed you can but it also depends on the type of pump you have (single speed , dual speed, or variable speed) you would want to talk to an electrician, if not, work with what you have.

Thanks for your video. In my country the public power is 220 v ac between the load cable and the neutral cable. Do you think that in the 220 v configuration this type of pump should work in my country?

Most manufacturers sell their pumps as domestic or export. I would recommend working with how it’s offered in your country.

We had a fire in our electric panel. We had it fixed but now we are not sure if the pool motor corresponds to a double pull 30 or a double pull 20. We had the pump tested (at Leslie’s) and it runs great . Any chance you can help us figure it out?

Oops I forgot to say it’s wired 220. And it was working fine before our fire. And our wiring it fine too

For your situation it would be best to have an electrician take a look, then you know that it will be done right.

So when you hook up 220 does the white and black (hots) both go to the circuit breaker (2 poles) nothing goes to the common bar?

This is correct, two hot lines and a ground. Thanks for watching.

I replaced my pool motor 5 years ago. Today, it's been overheating, shutting down and then starting back up again. Thanks to you, I did measure the voltage and it's giving a healthy 125V. But when I opened up the back of the motor, I noticed that the motor was set to 230V!!! I did save the original (to us since we moved into the house) motor and it ALSO was set to 230V! When I set the current motor to the 115V setting, it pops the 20Amp circuit breaker. So what's this all about? I ordered a new motor. What do I set it to?

You need to make sure that you measured the voltage correctly, if so then you may need to call an electrician. If you would like to contact me I will be glad to help you troubleshoot this issue.

@@HallmarkPoolSupplies Hooked to the disconnected wires leading into the motor. I have a black, white and ground wire. Meter hooked to the black wire and ground = 125V. White to ground gives 0V; which tells me it's neutral. The internal motor temp safety switch trips. I measured the outer casing to be 280F. The actual 20Amp circuit breaker does NOT pop unless I hook up the motor to the 115V setting. Logic tells me that when the new motor comes in, I should set it to 115V. But then why was this current motor and the previous one set to 230V? Seems like someone installed incorrectly and the motor is struggling due to half the voltage. But then I wouldn't have thought that the motor would last 5 years.

The replace pump I bought does not have that switch only has three ports, one white wire port, one with a red and brown wire and the last port a black wire. My wiring that I’m using has black, white and green for 220. Would I connect black to black port, white to the red and brown port, nothing to the white port, and ground to the ground green screw?

You need to check the schematic on the motor. For 220v you will have two hot wires and a ground. You should put one hot wire to L1 (line 1) and the other hot wire on L2 (line 2). Your green wire goes on the ground. Thanks for watching.

It sounds like the pump is not wired correctly. Check your voltage and make sure that your pump is set properly (high/low) to your voltage (220/110). Thanks for watching.
