🌿 In today's video, we're diving into the world of houseplant care with 10 proven and easy time-saving tips to help you reclaim some of that precious time without compromising the well-being of your beloved green companions.
As our plant collections grow, so does the time commitment, and it's easy to find ourselves overwhelmed. Whether you're a seasoned plant parent or just starting out, these tips will surely make your plant care routine more efficient and enjoyable.
*💧 Watering & Media:*
1. Learn to water when your plants need it, not just when it's on your schedule. Invest in a moisture meter for accurate readings.
2. Speed up your watering routine with a pump-action sprayer, especially handy for smaller plants or orchids.
3. Explore self-watering wicking systems or ready-made self-watering pots for a hands-off approach.
4. Consider switching to inorganic media to reduce repotting and minimize pest issues.
5. Use capillary matting to regulate moisture levels and extend the time between waterings.
*🌱 Fertilising:*
1. Opt for slow-release fertilizer sticks, tablets, or granules for a hassle-free feeding routine.
2. Mix orchid fertilizer into a large container to refill your sprayer, preventing the spread of diseases.
*🔧 Other Useful Ideas:*
1. Choose low-maintenance plants that don't leave a mess. Think orchids, Begonias, Streptocarpus, Snake plants, or ZZ plants.
2. Automate your plant care routine with smart plugs and controllers for lights, heaters, fans, and humidifiers.
3. Consider specializing in one plant type or genus to streamline care routines and enhance your expertise.
*🌟 Conclusion:*
While some may find joy in every moment spent with their plants, these time-saving hacks are for those looking to optimize their routine and spend more time on the aspects they love. Share your own tips in the comments, and let's create a community of efficient plant enthusiasts!

For self watering pots I add in extra grit like pumice, perlite, leca or vermiculite so the soil is damp but still airy. It should be 30-50% more gritty compared to regular media. I really want to get capillary matting, it sounds so useful. I use the ikea boot trays for plants and the cloth mats would work well for them. One of the things I do to make watering easier is to organize my plants so plants with similar watering needs are on a shelf together. My orchids and bromeliads are in one area, cacti and succulents in another, ferns in another, etc. That way I'm not running around here and there to water things. Another thing I find really useful is strategic placements of mirrors. Standing mirrors or decorative mirrors can be placed behind your plants. It will reflect more light onto the leaves and allows you to see the back sides of plants easier without moving pots around. I think it also looks very nice. Its much faster checking over plants with some mirrors behind the larger ones especially.

Some great tips here - thanks for sharing them! I especially like the self-watering idea - makes perfect sense. I might give it a go one day - at least for the plants in the house. I can ditto on the mirrors as my recent use of foil insulation is having a similar effect with the light.😁

Yeah you hit the nail on the head with your topic here. I counted my plants.. I have almost 101 plants in my living area, 2 of those are in my bathroom. This is not counting propagations 😅 So I tried to purge and only managed to gift away 7 plants! Thanks for this video 😊

Thank you for the great tips, Geoff! I only sprayed my mounted orchids, but the idea of spraying my potted orchids as well is brilliant. It takes me a bit over two hours to water everything, if I move fast. Of course I enjoy inspecting my orchids in detail, but this can be done less frequently, especially in summer, when I have to water on a daily basis. Happy growing!😀

Crikey 2 hours?!!🤷‍♂️ But yeah I know what you mean as lifting and inspecting plants is very much part of learning about them. I find that I enjoy doing that at a separate time when I'm not thinking about watering them, and a sprayer helps facilitate that - as well as helping you to reach those plants at the back of the shelves!

Good tips Geoff! Timers for controlling plant lights on and off. Keeping a small chuck of mosquito dunks or bits in your watering can helps keep fungus gnats away. I use a large, shallow storage bin as a repotting station to keep the mess off the table, it's cheaper than buying a regular potting station. A few bucks instead of $45 or more. A small hand pump sprayer for applying fungicide or (when needed) insecticide. It's also great for watering seed starting trays without disturbing the seeds.

Same here, coldest so far was 19 F., 25 F. this morning. We can get below zero F. here a few times during the season. The older I get (I'm 65) the more I hate the cold! @@Grow_Up_Man55

My tip is to get mini and micro plants if you live in a small space. You get to have a real collection with the joy of buying new plants, and often times a small spray is enough so no real watering. Fewer lights for a smaller space as well. It has been very fun this way to have a collection and I am at a point where I'd like to automate some things. The bigger specimens are very few and ones I really love and they become real eye catchers in the collection while they otherwise might have been lost in the crowd

As someone who grows a lot of plants and has two large glasshouses this is such good advice. Im going to get a sprayer for watering (I definitely under water and this will help safe time). I followed you and got the kit for temperature control and cost monitoring that was a game changer!

Thanks Nick I really appreciate that! 😬 That angel wing you sent me is still doing well despite the low temperatures - although a single slug ate half the leaves so I had to chop it back - and launched the slug over next door...

@@Grow_Up_Man55 Our slugs n snails get ejected into the stream by the house. Jane Perone listed that begonia in her top ten and did a short program on it. Worth a listen if you’ve not already.

I'm somewhat behind on podcasts but I'll get to it eventually. What temp does yours go down to? Mine looks like it's struggling a bit at 12°C - might have to bring it in the house. And speaking of Jane, I should be in her newsletter soon - that is, if I can write an article that's good enough! And I'll have a video coming out on Begonias next Thursday I think it is.

Yeah it works just fine, Jane. I use it regularly. Maybe I got lucky! (I've finished the script for my podcast video but after doing a poll it appears only 2% of those who completed it listen to podcasts. They don't know what they're missing! I'm going to do my best to change that...)

Up until this fall I was purging all of my 600+ plants (I always said I had 300+....but while counting it was well over 600 and I lost count and refused a recount 😂) last to go was my Hoyas (200+ same thing with the counting) . Now I have 100 -150 ish cacti, Euphorbias, and other Succulents. My life with plants is so much better now, I cut out almost all the winter time stress. I appreciate the helpful advice, thank you 😊 With the Jungle and Rainforest cacti types , I still can have the Jungle leafy feel a bit in my collection, but withoutall the drama (and expense ) of Hoyas .,

Wow 600?!!!🤣 And yeah I know what you mean. We all want more and more but it just takes over your life and you've simply GOT to become more selective. Ditch the under-performers - the duplicates - the ones that don't bring pleasure. That's going to be my early morning mantra to repeat 600 times in homage to you...

@@Grow_Up_Man55 Yeah , it was a bit much. Now I only collect non drama plants.... Hoyas ruined it for the rest of the high maintenance plants, so I purged all of them. 🤣

Great advice. I'm going to start using my pump sprayer. Just a note on smart plugs though; stories are circulating of them being documented as causing some dogs distress and making them ill due to their high frequencies, so watch out if you have pets.

Hmm maybe the cheap knock-offs? I’ve been using them for about 4 years now and Fudge shows zero signs of stress. Unless sleeping for 14 hours a day is stressful! 🤷‍♂️ Would be interesting to read any genuine studies on this though. Thanks for bringing it to my attention - I shall definitely keep an eye open for anything else written about it. 👍😁

I did narrow it down to one kind " houseplants" but I'm trying begonia for the first time and she's down to one small leaf, she was getting spots so it might be a bacteria. .. not sure

Aw that's a shame. What temperatures have you let it down to, and what's your watering schedule been like? The two most common reasons for failure in my experience are...too cold, and too wet!
