I hear plenty of lecture in Islam. but none of them give me more pleasure than sheikh Hamza Yusuf's one. May Allah rise his station!

the most useless thing to do is to read comments on youtube. people start to debate things they know so little about. this ulamas learn so many years under so many teachers read so many books. while some people only know few hadis and read a little part of tafsir from only one source and heard an opinion only from one ulama, then they start to tell people off "this haram this bidah this makruh this not true bla bla bla". is this how islam work?

The dua he mentions at 58:00 Allaahumma innee a‛oodhu bika an ushrika bika wa ana a‛lamu, wa astaghfiruka li maa laa a‛lam اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لَا أَعْلَمُ

Being an agnostic, I regard Hamza Yusuf as a very insightful and compassionate man. When he says to the Muslim community _"How much of our humanity will we lose before we wake up?" This applies to all of humanity not just those in his congregation. Indeed, we are asleep in our waking state. As Dr. Arthur Deikman said _"So habitual is the trance of ordinary life that one could say that human beings are a race that sleeps and awakens, but does not awaken fully. Because half-awake is sufficient for the task we customarily do, few of us are aware of the dysfunction of our condition."_ And the dysfunction of our condition is precisely what Yusuf is passionately concerned about. He says, quite rightly, that the mass amount of information infiltrating our homes has a pervasive dehumanizing effect on the human mind by turning us into mindless slaves to all manner of consumption. It is so true! It is through the airwaves that we unwittingly become vulnerable to credulity, to myths and lies veiled as truth and we fail to realize the depth in which we are being deceived and manipulated psychologically by all manner of propaganda. Dr. Erich Fromm says that _Our conscious motivations, ideas, and beliefs are a blend of false information, biases, irrational passions, rationalizations, prejudices, in which morsels of truth swim around and give the reassurance, albeit false, that the whole mixture is real and true. The thinking process attempts to organize this whole cesspool of illusions according to the laws of logic and plausibility. This level of consciousness is supposed to reflect reality; it is the map we use for organizing our life. This false map is not repressed. What is repressed is the knowledge of reality, the knowledge of what is true. If we ask, then: What is unconscious? the answer must be: Aside from irrational passions, almost the whole of knowledge of reality. The unconscious is basically determined by society, which produces irrational passions and provides its members with various kinds of fiction and thus forces the truth to become the prisoner of the alleged rationality_ And so, just as Dr. Fromm is urging us to wake up from our repressed knowledge, Yusuf is asking the Muslim community to do the same. But, as I said, we ALL need to wake up to our complacent madness.
