Hand Cut Bridle Joint or Open Mortise & Tenon
Watch as I demonstrate how to prepare a bridle joint, then try it yourself.
When forming a mortise and tenon joint at a corner, the usual method is to employ a haunch or secret haunch, so that the mortise does not extend right to the end of the component, but the tenon supports the full width of it's section to prevent cupping. However, it is also possible to create an open mortise with a full width tenon, known as a bridle joint, which replaces a lot of the effort of mortise chopping with two straight saw cuts.
The bridal joint is also ideal for quickly forming a tee intersection, where the open mortise straddles an 'enclosed' tenon - but that's another video...
