i hope Matt is reading this. i remember that hand. i remember watching you. i remember rooting for you (mostly because you had a Griffey jersey, he's my all-time favourite baseball player). when i saw that hand, i was crushed for you. i've played and dealt in my time. when i saw you come back, you had my respect. everyone gets turned, riverred, out flopped, etc. some times you're the nail. some times you're the hammer. you played a hand worth more than 90% of the population would've ever see in their lifetime. when i saw your lower lip quivering, i was crushed for you. you played it perfectly. i'm so relieved and happy for you that you made it to the other side, sounding like you grew from it. that's worth more than the hand. with that attitude, i'm still rooting for you!

I remember watching this live. I was a kid and even then I thought wow that must be awful. Grew up played some tourneys myself, bubbled some for waaaaay less money involved but still 4-8 hour tourneys. God, the frustration... It's really heavy stuff lol always came back to this hand wondering how he didn't kill himself or anything for that matter out of frustration. I'm glad he's been interviewed, looking healthy, about loosing life-changing money on a single river. He took it like a champ Short term and long term. Respect.

I remember watching this when it happened on ESPN. I was in college and I was obsessed with poker. Now years later I have rediscovered my passion for poker and have been watching Matt’s coaching vids. It’s great that things have worked out so well for him and seems like a great dude. Watching this footage all over again definitely brought back how gut wrenching that moment was. The main event was such a spectacle back then, poker was HUGE!! Anyway who ever produced this interview did a great job, it was iconic moment in WSOP history.

I never understood Duhamel's call here. Everytime I see this hand, I always wonder what was his thought process. I understand Matt was on the button but do you really think this guy is going to try to run you over for a chance to win 8 MM? He's pretty much crushed against most if not all Matt's range (10-AA, AQ, with the exception of AK).
@DarrenSemotiuk

Literally *nobody* understood Duhamel's call on the turn. He check-calls OTF but then check-CALLS on the turn when he beats nothing but a stone cold bluff, which in 2010 would be extremely rare especially that close to the FT, and ESPECIALLY coming from the other chip leader.

I watched John's explanation on tv he said he knew he had outs to suck out on him and if he lost he would have a couple big blinds to work with and if he won the hand he would be overwhelming chip leader which he won and became overwhelming chip leader.. risk vs reward in this case huge risk = massive reward. I understand his reasoning for that.. he had 6 outs.
@nardinit
@nardinit 4 жыл бұрын
@@nsme6942 10 outs...that's approx 20% on the turn when he calls. It's ICM suicide, risk is not worth the reward there. His thought process doesn't make any sense. "I knew I had outs" is what you typically hear at a live 1/2 cash game, it's hardly a justification in most cases.

That's crazy, the better move was probabily to 5bet shove pre flop even if it was a really big overshove especially 2nd in chips. But i think there could be the only way duhamel realizes he couldn't call the amount pre cause he had to realize he was beat 100% of the times. For sure is not the right play to accumulate more chips in the hamd but would avoid for sure the elimination and in that position i think is better even if you finish 6th for example.

This and ivey money maker hands two of the most brutal beats. I like Matt hope he wins one
@cocourth5611
@cocourth5611 Жыл бұрын
Difference is, Matt Affleck and Duhamel were both top two chip leaders. This pot meant a lot for both. If Matt won, Duhamel will be crippled down to few blinds. Ivey on the other hand, he was short stacked while Moneymaker had massive chip stack. So even if Moneymaker had lost that pot to Ivey, Moneymaker would still have a healthy stack. So I would say Matt Affleck's bad beat was way more brutal than Phil Ivey's bad beat, not to mention how much the winnings changed their lives. But Ivey, his life didn't change or recognized over main event. He was already established pro who plays cash games for living. He doesn't need the tournament to have a life changing opportunity. So clearly this bad beat was way more brutal than river Ace to Phil. Also, Phil can at least acknowledge that if he was in Moneymaker's shoes, he would be doing the same thing. Duhamel? He clearly had the option to fold. He decided to suck out by calling the all-in on the turn and rivers a straight for 10 outer on the turn for 21%. 11.6 mil to win pot of 30 mil. That's not even 3:1 odds while his odds of winnings is 4:1. So this should've been a fold, especially when there's lot of top range of hands that Affleck can have that has Duhamel beat. Duhamel straight up wanted to play bingo and look for outs.

@ 8:37 What Matt says here is echoed by a lot of long-enduring poker pros, especially Alex Fitzgerald. An early big win (or getting there before you really learn to handle the ups and downs) can be really hard to sustain afterwards and that is why so many have given up on the game of poker after early (especially "easy") success.

I wonder what Duhamel put him on. Two diamonds and a straight draw?
