Hi Rob, I tried cutting dovetails about 12 months ago, and I would be embarrassed to show them to anyone. It was so bad I almost gave up. Then I bought your dovetail saw, watched your video and made near-perfect dovetails on my first attempt. Your saws and your methods are absolutely amazing. Also, I couldn't sharpen a plane blade or chisel to save my life until I watched your videos. I have only been into woodworking for a few years, but your channel has accelerated my learning and developed skills I would not have thought possible. Thank you for creating this wonderful content.

I had the opportunity to try the Cosman, Lie-Nielson, and Florip dovetail saws back to back at the “Wood and Shop” woodworking school. As much as I wanted to prefer the less expensive saws, I kept coming back to the Cosman saw. I bought one and haven’t regretted that decision for a minute.

I started handtool wood working in my garage 4 years ago. Was getting ready to retire and wanted a new hobby. By chance, I ran across Rob’s channel. And as a retired Marine, was drawn to the PHP. Four years later, I own one of each of Rob’s saws. I use them all and love them all! The 3/4 saws are especially welcomed for box making. I’ve got no experience with other saws so can’t speak to comparisons, but I give Rob and his products my 100% endorsement. I would buy them all again!

Very timely video as I (im)patiently await today's delivery of the two RC saws I won from the Jay Bates raffle to benefit PHP! And thanks so much for your extremely generous contribution to that raffle, Rob! (didn't even know you had done that!) But I'm excited - I've made a few dovetails using Japanese saws and saw guides that have turned out okay, but I can't wait to go full Cosman! Thanks for the history and saw breakdown ... and thanks especially for all you do.

I have been looking at dovetail saws for a year since watching Rob’s videos have inspired me to grow my hand tool woodworking experience. There is a therapeutic element to using hand tools and I felt like that would be a way to gain better emotional stability in my life. I kept seeing other saws that were much less expensive and seemed to be comparable to the Cosman saws but the more I evaluated them, the competition never added up to the quality and function that Rob’s saws offer. I finally broke down and purchased the saw, and it arrived a couple days ago. I haven’t cut my first dovetail yet, but I can already tell it’s going to be awesome. Thank you, Rob, for your dedication to the craft and to the veteran community!

I have both a lie-neilsen and a cosman dovetail saw. The lie-neilsen is a great saw but the cosman saw was so much easier to learn with. You are much more likely to practice if you are getting decent results and the tool is easy to work with.

I have 4 Rob Cosman backsaws, and they are all used extensively for joinery. But I have been struggling with cutting down rough stock using various handsaws I've accumulated over the years. I finally found a couple of great Crown handsaws with rip teeth a few years ago (5 tpi and 9 tpi), which work very well for ripping down my stock to rough size. But I have yet to find a decent crosscut saw that will give me good crosscuts in dense hardwoods like maple or walnut. This is the first I've heard of your panel saw offerings! I will be ordering your crosscut saw today.

I got a pair of old Sorby backsaws from auction when I first got into hand tools, but compared to old planes I wouldn't recommend refurbishing them from the get go. From what I understand spring steel degrades, and the major effort had me slightly disappointed once I compared them to a new Cosmon saw-it's a night and day difference. They have *the* best handles if you want a saw with weight.

I saw a little trick with back saws, occasionally the blade will be curved, to fix this, turn the saw over and bang the brass on your work bench and it straightens out the blade. More specific t o gent saws but it will work with any saw that has a back. any experience with that rob ?

Hi Rob, i own a few of your saws and plan on adding your panel saw set to them. Quick question. In regards to your brass back saws, is the bench joinery saw the only one that doesn't have the starter teeth and if so why is that? Thank you

None of the crosscuts, teeth have a relaxed angle of attack that makes it easy to push. Different style of cut.

I am looking to start making small boxes, for jewelry, game pieces, cards, for pencils, and art brushes, etc. Would you still recommend those 3 saws, or would those 2 smaller saws with the dovetail saw be better? Stuff I would like to make is definitely no bigger than mans jewelry box you showed. Might be even smaller.
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 ай бұрын
So a 3/4 dovetail saw is for cutting wood 3/8 an inch thick and less, the regular dovetail saw is for bigger than that. Can you cut joints in wood 3/8 and less with a regular DT saw? Yes of course but the 3/4 is a bit easier in smaller wood. Can you cut thicker wood with a 34 saw? Yes up to no larger than 3/4 thick but its slower and you cannot go as deep. Generally speaking…if you can inly get one I would get the regular saw

If you’re new to hand cutting joints but haven’t gotten into dovetails, (so far I’ve been trying mitred bridal joints) what saw would you recommend?
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 ай бұрын
We still recommend the standard dovetail saw. Its a fine toothed rip cut. Most cuts in joinery are rip cuts. Even though its filed rip, you can crosscut with it, it just will not be as quick and clean a cut as a dedicated crosscut saw

Yup, in the time before power saws a sawyer would easily carry around 8 - 16 saws all with different teeth and tooth configurations. A 4 TPI saw was a brute of a saw fir hacking up lumber. Not pretty cuts but fast (if you had the arm muscle)

Worth every penny. I have had RC dovetail saw for almost 2 years and love it. When I went to Handworks in September 2023 I was able to test drive dovetail saws (as well as cross cut and tenon saws) from Lie-Nielsen, Bad Axe and Blue Spruce. None of them are as easy to start and they don’t cut as fast. It reinforced my decision to get the RC dovetail saw so much that when I got home from Handworks I immediately ordered the RC joinery cross cut and medium tenon saws. I love all three of them. Thanks @RobCosmanWoodworking.

Saw sharpening is an incredibly easy skill. So many woodworkers are intimidated by it buts its seriously easy....almost cannot screw it up. Setting and jointing a saw is slightly harder but they are not difficult and if you start out with a new saw you should not have to re-set or re-joint it for 5-10 years (hobby woodworker)
