I did a video on how to convert a Harbor Freight pressure pot for resin casting about 2 years ago. There have been lots of questions on that video that I have answered a few times. So I decided to make another Harbor Freight pressure pot Video answering all of those questions. Resin casting is lots of fun and I hope to take the intimidation out of making your first cast.

Say Jake. First off, thanks for your first video on how to covert Harbor Freight tanks. You detailed the process so well that I had no issue accomplishing it. Secondly, out of the gates my tank leaks air like a sieve, and as your noted, it leaks around the lid.. I appreciate your solution to the problem, but I have a better way to attack it. I removed the ridiculous gasket that comes with the tank, then I mixed a batch of silicone rubber and poured it into the channel where the gasket once sat. It works like a charm, without extra clamps like you had to do. I am able to hold air up to 60 lbs. I just give the clamps a good twist with a wrench and it’s good to go. The silicone that I used is Smooth On brand. Thanks again.

If anyone tries pouring a new gasket like I did, I have one tip. You might want to run a bead of calk around the channel wall that is welded in place. That metal lip is poorly welded and silicone leaks under it. It didnt leak a ton but it was a little annoying.

I had such an issue with mine after 2 days, i returned it, and got another as a replacement. the toughest part is evenly tightening the lamps on the pot, seemed to make a huge difference in holding pressure consistently. so i do like if you were tightening lug nuts on a wheel....1/2 turn one side, 1/2 turn opposing side and so on. I had more of an issue with the gunk near the relief valve, had to gob some teflon tape there. Thanks for posting Jake, i really thought i was the only one having an issue holding pressure and the leak issues!

I have an older Craftsman paint pot I got at a rummage sale for 2 bucks I converted. It gave me some leaking issues and I thought about the way to put a wheel/tire on a vehicle. You alternate the tightening pattern. Previously I would just randomly tighten the wingnuts in any order. As I began to alternate tightening the wingnuts angled, like putting on a wheel, it became easier to get the lid tighter and eliminate leaks.

Petroleum jelly softens dry rubber gaskets so they can form a better seal. We use it on refrigerator gaskets where I work. It does eventually wear the gasket away little by little though, so I wouldn't use it on gaskets that aren't already old and dry or you'll probably have to replace them sooner.

So I noticed that it's very important to tighten the clamps down simultaneously. Opposing sides a little bit at a time, then use the wrench a bit. If it leaks around 50 psi identify where and try to tighten the clamp down by hand or with the wrench a bit.

Very good video , I learned a lot from it. Thank you. I’m new to this and the video helped immensely. Question, if I use a silicone mold and pour my epoxy resin into my mold and put the mold in the pressure pot , will the air pressure distort my silicone mold at all ?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 3 жыл бұрын
If your silicone mold has air in it and you put it in a pressure pot, it will deform.. depending on how much air is in it, will determine how much deformation
@OregonDARRYL

Sand the top of the pot smooth. Silicone glue the gasket into the lid, so it has to seal on only one side, and always put the lid on in exactly the same spot. Mark it and match it. Lubricate the the threads on the clamps, and where the clamps dig into the lid to make tightening them easier. Seal your joints well... and stay under 50 PSI. At least ... this is what I'm doing. Thanks for all your advice!

People have done this many ways.. with and without a regulator.. and such.. if you see a way to do it without the elbow.. go for it. You don’t need a big compressor to fill this pot.. a small compressor will do just fine.
@chadvoller
@chadvoller 3 жыл бұрын
Anyone who buys one, make sure to check if you get one that has NPT and compression style fittings. Mine did, don't put an NPT where there was a compression fitting. I shouldn't have to say that but there's some tutorials on KZfaq for this tank that you will end up doing that if you follow them, theirs might have had all NPT, or they just didn't know better. Pull the gasket out of the lid, and check for weld splatter. I had huge ones that had to be knocked out, that's where my initial leaks came from. Also, the lid is thin. Over tightening the clamps will actually warp the lid, and possibly make it harder to get a seal next time. 4 star pattern, 1/4 turn at a time, hand tighten should be all you need to get a seal if you have smooth surfaces and a good gasket. In 24 hours, my tank will go from 60 to 55PSI. Which is mostly from my safety valve according to a bubble test with soapy water.

Vacuum pumps are great for two scenarios. 1: It isn't a burning inferno where you are, 2: long pot life silicon/resin. Degassing and pressure potting will return results that are just about perfect every time and removes almost all risk. Reason I mention weather is potlife goes down in heat, and the vacuum can create some serious heat especially if it is already hot to begin with.

I've been tempted to do this but am concerned about it leaking. Almost all videos I've seen that convert a Harbor Freight paint pressure pot to a resin casting pressure pot say that it WILL leak. It seems in your demo the leak was primarily the lid. Can a better gasket be added to fix that problem? Can a bead of 100% silicone around the lid create a better seal? I can clamp it to my bench like you did but would like to have it so it just doesn't leak at all and is mobile. Thanks for sharing your video! 👍🏾

Thank you Greg.. After this video I bought a better seal for the lid. It’s linked in the first comment.. as far as leaking .. if you fill it to 55 and overnight it’s at 50.. I wouldn’t consider that a big deal.. as long as it stays over 45 psi until the resin becomes solidified. The new seal was a night and day difference from the original.. it was way better.

I'm new to resin & do have problems with air bubbles even though I torch or heat gun. Sometimes I want to cast & sometimes I just need to coat a painting I use KS resin. Does it matter what resin you use & how do you know how long to have the resin in the pot before it starts to set up when you want to pour it instead of casting?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Deb., a pressure pot helps with any kind of resin. If you have something you are coating and it won’t fit in a pot.. you have to use a torch. If you have problems with bubbles.. make sure you are stirring the epoxy gently and not introducing air bubbles yourself. When you use a pressure pot, there’s always a demold time on the instructions you use. Keep it in the pot for that long.. I hope this helps.

Have you ever casted any thing in resin for which reason that you did not put in a pressure pot because I tried into a without a pressure pot at all you can’t see the bubbles because of the pigment I put in I think there are still bubbles underneath because as I started to turn it on my lathe I ended up with chips out of the resin I was wondering if you ever experienced that

I've tried using an electric car tire pump to pressurize it and it seems to put pressure in, but it leaks from the large black pressure valve through the part you turn to let more air in. Seems like the valve might be bad? Can I get away without using the valve if I'm using a tire pump?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson Жыл бұрын
I’ve never used a tire pump and I recommend using a air compressor with a tank the size of the pot to fill the pressure pot effectively.. some people run the pot without a regulator. You fill to your desired psi and shut the inlet valve.. I use the regulator.

I just completed the transformation of the HF pot to a casting pot per your video. Everything seems fine but there is one air leak I can't get fixed. It's at the regulator valve. If tightened it as much as I can, both on top of the pot as well as the nut under it. I've taken it off and retaped it and still it leaks. I out 50 lbs of air in and in about a half hour it has dropped to 20 pounds. Do think caulking on the top of the valve would help? Thanks for any advice you might have.

There’s some stuff called liquid Teflon, it works pretty good.. but I would leave the air hooked up so if it leaks the regulator will keep it at 50 psi

I just got my harbor freight pot because of how you made it look so simple to convert in your video!...Question however.... the regulator T screw where you let in air ....does it normally leak air out of there also?....I'm having that .....from a small existing hole right above the T crew area of the regulator ....I'm trying to figure out the best position on it to keep it at at least 50psi...and the Manuel just says clockwise for more and counter clock for less....I'm trying for just above 50..like 55 but it wont let me
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching the videos.. of you have that to where it regulates to 50psi or so and the hole in the regulator leaks.. the regulator is faulty.. you will need to take the entire thing back and exchange it or buy a new regulator.

How long does it take while it is in the pressure pot? I'm sure one factor is how much is inside the pot, but what if, say, 4 pen blanks are in the pot at 50 psi? Really enjoy your videos! Keep them coming!!
@JakeThompson

If it’s alumilite clear slow you can take them out of the pot in 2 hours... the smaller the amount you pour the longer you need to leave it in there.. it takes longer for the chemical reaction to take place with a lesser amount of resin. Resins or epoxy with longer working time, I just leave overnight

Be careful tightening it. I have destroyed one of the clamps from tightening it too much. What I'm going to do to fix it is get a 3 inch clamp for about $4 and drill a hole in the bottom of it to use as an additional clamp. I do worry about it not being strong enough but I'll see. I just purchased the same pressure pot and made the alterations as shown in your other video. I’m putting air into the pot to set the regulator and the safety valve. The valve keeps popping at about 38lbs. I believe I’m bottomed out on the adjustment by screwing the slotted ring clockwise. It’s down so far I can’t get it to turn anymore. Still popping at 38lbs ( I’d like to get it set at 50lbs). Am I doing something wrong?
