Today we look at a Pressure Pot made for resin casting and no conversion is needed. California Air Tools came up with a nice solution for converting paint pots into pressure pots for resin casting. I purchased this pot because I needed another one, and I thought it would be nice to just be able to install an air fitting and start casting. I show un boxing, installing the wheels, air regulator, and air fitting and I was filling it with air. It was that easy. I show how to adjust the air regulator and pop off safety valve. Super Easy!

I went through 2 paint pressure pots...different names -identical junk Chinese products - there was not enough sealant and plumbers tape to keep them from leaking. Amazon was great! They took both of them both back. I bought the California Air Tools 5 gallon tank. Worked right out of the box once I added an adapter. No fuss, no muss!

We have had this pressure pot for a few months and love it so much we are thinking of getting a second one. Since getting this one we have wondered how we managed with the HF version as long as we did. This one holds it's pressure for at least 24 hours, and is so much easier to get closed properly. In a small shop, the quick air release is much preferred, the noise is easier to tolerate for 2 seconds vs a couple minutes.

@@JakeThompson I was going to sit it on my counter, but I wouldn’t have been able to use two hands to lower things into the pot, but plan on making a 2’ table for it. That’ll get it to the middle of my stomach where I can still use both hands if needed. I plan on buying another one this spring to mount horizontally. I want to make a swing-arm to attach to the the lid handle/bar. You should make a show about the making of a swing arm, I bet that’d get a ton of views. I want a horizontal pot, but can’t afford the commercial made purpose built ones, so I’m going to model mine after the horizontal autoclaves I see in the hospitals. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the review of the pressure pot, Jake. I mainly work with epoxy resins so working time is not a problem for me as you have more working time than with some of the other casting resins. I am seriously going to consider this pot from that Air company as I have one of their air compressors that is really quiet, if it is the same company. I do wonder if there is a 2.5 gallon version because I do smaller projects and don't see needing a 5 gallon tank for what I do but who knows someday I might get into bigger castings. Thanks again.

A great informative video. You answered my question. I have 8 gallon CA Tools air compressor I just bought. So, I think you are indicating it should wok with the 5 gallon pot. But, it may not be big enough to charge up a 10 gallon pressure pot timely enough to avoid curing issues by the time it pressurizes and the pot gets to the right pressure. Did I understand tha correctly? Also is a 5 gallon pressure post large enough for most casting projects like pen turning blabks, medium vases, etc. (possible future interest)? Not a good enough turner for that yet, but may pursue in future years. Please keep up the good work brother.
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson Ай бұрын
Thank you Rob.. the 8 gallon tank will work with the 10 gallon pot but it does take longer to fill up, so as long as you aren’t pushing the time too bad.. it will be fine. I bought the 10 gallon pot for a particular project that would have fit in a 5 gallon pot.. I just didn’t know any better at the time.. The 5 gallon pot works for most resin castings.

Hi Jake, my pressure pot does something a little weird. It goes up to about 40, then leaks a bit around the lid gasket, then settles down and seals at 35 psi. It's an intermittent thing and I've tried a few tricks to solve it but it's not altogether predictable. I did find a little irregularity in the gasket flange which I ground back flat and it was OK for a bit then. I can't use liquid PTFE though as the gasket just gets slippery and then I'm chasing two inches of slack round and round. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Thank you for this Jake, I am torn between doing the conversion of the harbor freight 2.5 or get this one in this video. right now harbor freight has a coupon so I can get the HF one for 75 dollars, but I am wondering if its big enough. I have some big hand poured silicone molds that are deep , probably 3 in deep in places and about 10 inches hight 4 wide, will that fit in the HF smaller one? mostly I do smaller molds like 4x4s but I do have some expensive shelf molds that are bigger . Okay so I'm new to researching the pressure pot thing so don't laugh too hard when I ask... do you think I could get by with a Coleman 12V air compressor? I rent a small 3rd floor studio space in a building of accountants and consultants so I don't think a compressor tank would be a viable option but I need something because I'm in Oregon and the temp/humidity control is nil. And can you use a pressure pot for wood stabilizing too or just the vac chamber? Whattaya think? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for watching the video. That air compressor won’t work. For a 5 gallon pot, you need an air compressor with at least a 5 gallon tank on it. You use a vacuum chamber for stabilizing and a toaster oven. 👍👍

Hi Jake what air compressor to use for casting? What psi? How many horsepower?I look up in your video but I don’t see.thank you
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 3 жыл бұрын
You just need an air compressor with a tank as big as your pressure pot.. most air compressors can hold above 100psi and it will fill your pot to at least 45 psi without having to refill the compressor.

Hi Jake, I just tested my 5 gallons pressure pot, I see moisture come out, I read some comments in your video, there’s a dryer for the air pressure hose? May I know that tools, thanks again.

What size compressor do I get for this pot for home use for resin there is so much information out there I got lost. I want it to be as safe as possible.

@ph270able 3 жыл бұрын
I know this is really late since it's been a month and you've already figured it out and youtube has no really useful way of informing you about replies, but your air compressor tank should be larger than the pressure pot tank, so greater than 5 gallons. This is just a physics thing, as a smaller pressure chamber will not be able to fill a larger pressure chamber unless the line connecting them contains the difference in pressure necessary

Having converted the Harbor Freight Paint pot to a pressure pot for casting and now having the CA pressure pot, is it worth the extra expense? I realize it's twice as big but are the components better to a point that it would be worthwhile to spend the extra money? Also, is the lid gasket better or is it prone to leaks just like with the cheaper conversion options? Thank you.
@JakeThompson

This pot is miles apart from the harbor freight.. I think it is worth the extra money.. the harbor freight will get the job done, but with some fuss.. the way the lid clamps down on this one is worth the money in my opinion... and I have no leaks.

I'm curious what is the difference between the 365B and 365C models?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 3 жыл бұрын
I explained it in the video, but the one I have has a big outlet valve to let air out.. and the other one doesn’t.. also the inlet on mine has a couple inlets you don’t need... the other pot has that bypassed or eliminated.. either pot will work for casting.. I like the big outlet valve.

Another useful video. Keep them coming man. Ive got a question and its not about press pots. I'm about to turn a 10×4 african mahogany. My lathe dont vibrate on 750 but it does on 900. My concern is when I turn it on 750 will it be to slow and take chunks out instead of cutting?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Greg.. so does your lathe vibrate because the material isn’t round yet, or is there something wrong with your lathe.

I cut off the edges and its pretty much round already. Nothing serious to make it wobbly.
@JakeThompson

@@gregskarzynski7853 I just cut at a low rpm and the more balanced it gets.. the faster I spin it.. if it vibrates I either slow it down a tad, or sometimes speeding it up will get the vibration out.

Wear ear protection. The weakest part of the pressure pot is the gasket. That's why the safety value is rated at 55. When that gasket fails you get a o so sweet sound.

Most Americans have metric tools. Especially if they work on Japanese vehicles and bicycles. Americans that are machinist, engineers, 3D printers and high-end woodworkers, also use metric tools. It's literally not that rare in America to use the metric system. My Acura and BMWs all require metric tools.
